Five Nights at Freddy’s Official Games Compared: Which One Should You Play First?

Start with Five Nights at Freddy’s (2014) if this is your first visit to the series. It teaches the camera-watching, timing and limited-resource survival loop more clearly than any later entry. Choose Help Wanted instead if you want a modern collection of scenarios and the option to play in flat mode or VR. Save Security Breach for after a classic game if exploration matters most, and approach Secret of the Mimic after learning the series’ foundations so its newer first-person setting has context.

The short answer: which FNaF game is best first?

The best default starting point is Five Nights at Freddy’s, released on August 18, 2014. Steam identifies it as a single-player game developed and published by Scott Cawthon. Its compact, fixed-location format concentrates the series’ defining skills: monitoring cameras, judging movement, timing defensive actions and managing a limited supply of power through each night.

That recommendation is about learning the franchise, not declaring one game universally superior. The right first game depends on the format you want:

  • Learn the original survival formula: begin with Five Nights at Freddy’s.
  • Sample several styles in a modern package: begin with Five Nights at Freddy’s: Help Wanted.
  • Explore a larger environment: play a classic entry first, then Security Breach.
  • Play the newest major standalone setting: learn the basics, then start Secret of the Mimic.

There is no requirement to own a VR headset for Help Wanted. Its Steam description presents it as a collection of classic and original mini-games that works in flat mode as well as VR.

How the four main choices differ

The following comparison focuses on what a newcomer actually feels while playing: how quickly the rules can be learned, how much movement and exploration the game expects, whether VR is required or supported, and how directly it teaches the original night-survival loop.

Game Learning curve Exploration VR requirement or support How directly it teaches the original loop
Five Nights at Freddy’s (2014) Focused introduction; a small set of rules builds night by night Very limited; the challenge is observation from one location Not presented as a VR game Directly teaches camera use, timing and resource management
Help Wanted (2019) Variable; individual mini-games range from familiar to novel Scenario-based rather than a single free-roam environment Playable flat or in VR; a headset is not required Classic mini-games teach it directly, while original mini-games broaden the format
Security Breach (2021) More systems and space to understand than the classic format Large, free-roam-oriented presentation The cited release information does not make VR a requirement Teaches later exploration-oriented play more than the original fixed-room routine
Secret of the Mimic (2025) Designed around a newer first-person setting; easier to place after the fundamentals First-person exploration and horror in an abandoned costume manor Steam lists optional VR support; the game is also playable without treating VR as a prerequisite Provides context for the series but is not the clearest tutorial for the original loop

Why the 2014 original is the clearest tutorial

The original game gives you a deliberately narrow problem: survive a sequence of nights while interpreting information from cameras and spending a finite defensive resource carefully. Every important action has an understandable cost, so beginners can see why a mistake happened and adjust on the next attempt.

That focus matters because later games assume a player is comfortable with the series’ language of surveillance, sudden threats and risk-versus-resource decisions. Starting with the 2014 game lets you learn that language without also learning a large map, a collection of unrelated mini-games or a newer first-person structure.

What you learn first

  • How to switch attention between a room view and camera information.
  • How to recognize that defensive actions consume a resource rather than being free protection.
  • How timing and observation matter more than constant movement.
  • How each night can function as a practical lesson in the rules.

Steam lists the game as single-player and dates its release to August 18, 2014. Those details make it the oldest and most concentrated starting point among the four choices here, not merely a nostalgic option.

When Help Wanted is the better first game

Five Nights at Freddy’s: Help Wanted is the strongest alternative for someone who wants variety immediately. Steam describes it as “a collection of classic and original mini-games set in the Five Nights universe.” That format allows you to sample recognizable scenarios and newer ideas without committing to one long campaign structure.

The game was released on May 28, 2019. Steam credits Steel Wool Studios as developer and ScottGames as publisher. Its most practical advantage for newcomers is flexibility: you can play in flat mode on a standard screen, or use VR if you already have compatible hardware. The headset is optional, so buying the game does not force a separate hardware purchase.

Choose Help Wanted first if you value

  • A sampler rather than a single lesson: classic and original mini-games sit in the same package.
  • Flexible hardware: begin in flat mode and consider VR later instead of planning around a headset.
  • Shorter, self-contained scenarios: the mini-game structure makes it easier to try different kinds of challenge.
  • A modern presentation: it introduces the universe through a later collection while retaining classic material.

The trade-off is consistency. Because the experience changes from one mini-game to another, it is not as orderly a tutorial as the 2014 original. A first-time player who wants one steadily escalating rule set should still choose the original.

Where Security Breach fits

Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach is the choice for players who want a substantially larger, exploration-focused presentation. Steam lists it as a ScottGames release dated December 16, 2021. Compared with the fixed-location structure of the original, its free-roam orientation asks you to understand space, movement and objectives across a broader environment.

That scale is precisely why it is usually a poor first lesson in the franchise’s signature loop. A newcomer learning cameras, timing and resource limits at the same time as a large environment has more systems competing for attention. Play at least one classic entry first, or use Help Wanted’s classic scenarios as preparation.

Should you play Security Breach before Ruin?

Yes. Steel Wool identifies Ruin as downloadable content for the Security Breach base game. Treat the base game as the foundation and Ruin as a follow-on chapter rather than an independent starting point. Playing the original first also makes the setting and terminology easier to follow.

Pick Security Breach first only when exploration outweighs onboarding

If your priority is moving through a large environment rather than mastering the classic night routine, Security Breach can be your first purchase. Go in knowing that it represents a later, free-roam-oriented direction. You may understand its broad premise without having played earlier games, but you will not receive the clearest introduction to the franchise’s original survival design.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What makes Secret of the Mimic different

Secret of the Mimic is the newest major standalone presentation covered here. Steel Wool’s announcement places it in the abandoned Murray’s Costume Manor and describes the Mimic as a prototype endoskeleton that can adapt to different costumes and become any character, including what you fear most.

The initial release was June 13, 2025, on PlayStation 5, Steam and the Epic Games Store. Steel Wool later announced Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch launches beginning December 16, 2025. Its Steam listing includes optional VR support, so VR is an available format rather than a condition of entry.

Is Secret of the Mimic a good entry point?

It is a reasonable entry point for someone whose priority is the newest first-person setting, but it is not the best first lesson in FNaF history. The game’s manor, adaptive prototype and exploration-oriented horror make more sense as a later variation on ideas you have already encountered. Play the 2014 original or the classic material in Help Wanted first if you want to recognize how the series has changed.

If you have never played FNaF

Start with Five Nights at Freddy’s. Its single-location structure gives you the cleanest path from first night to later difficulty. Afterward, continue through the early numbered games if you enjoy that rule set.

If you want the shortest modern sampler

Start with Help Wanted in flat mode. Move to VR only if you already own compatible equipment and want the added immersion. You can experience its classic and original mini-games without treating VR hardware as part of the entry fee.

If you are an exploration-first player

Play the original or Help Wanted first, then move to Security Breach. Follow it with Ruin, which is tied to the Security Breach base game as downloadable content.

If you always want the newest release

Play at least one classic entry, then choose Secret of the Mimic. That order lets you appreciate its first-person setting and adaptive Mimic concept without expecting it to teach the original fixed-room formula.

A beginner-friendly play order

For most first-time players, release order is less confusing than trying to reconstruct a lore chronology. The straightforward route is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Five Nights at Freddy’s
  2. Five Nights at Freddy’s 2
  3. Five Nights at Freddy’s 3
  4. Five Nights at Freddy’s 4
  5. Then continue into the later entries, including the format changes represented by Help Wanted, Security Breach, its Ruin DLC and Secret of the Mimic.

This is a practical learning route, not a claim that every spin-off, DLC or adjacent release has one universally accepted story position. A lore-chronology route is a separate, spoiler-heavy project and can make a first playthrough harder to follow.

Hardware and purchase decisions

Choose the game according to the device and presentation you actually want:

  • Standard screen, classic horror: the 2014 original requires no VR decision and is the most focused starting point.
  • Standard screen with variety: Help Wanted works in flat mode and contains both classic and original mini-games.
  • Large-area exploration: Security Breach is the later free-roam-oriented option; plan on the base game before its Ruin DLC.
  • Newest first-person setting: Secret of the Mimic launched on PlayStation 5, Steam and Epic Games Store in June 2025, with Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch releases beginning December 16, 2025.

Platform editions and physical availability can differ by region, so confirm the store listing for your platform before buying. The release dates above identify the launches documented for each title, not a promise that every edition appeared simultaneously in every market.

Common first-game mistakes

Starting with the biggest map

A large environment can look like the most accessible option, but it introduces exploration decisions before you understand the series’ basic survival grammar. If you become lost or unsure why a threat succeeded, step back to the original or a classic Help Wanted scenario.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming VR is mandatory

Help Wanted explicitly supports flat play, and its Steam description says a VR headset is not required. Treat VR as an optional format choice, not a prerequisite.

Using lore order as a tutorial

Story chronology and learning order are different. The documented material does not establish one canonical route for every spin-off and DLC. Release order gives a clearer progression of mechanics and presentation.

Expecting every game to teach the same loop

The original is a focused night-survival exercise. Help Wanted is a collection, Security Breach emphasizes free-roam exploration, and Secret of the Mimic presents a newer first-person horror setting. Choose the game whose format matches your goal instead of judging every entry by the original’s structure.

Final recommendation by priority

Your priority Start with Reason
