FiveM anticheat can help identify or deter cheating, but it is not a substitute for securing your server. The strongest practical approach is layered: register events for the right context, validate consequential actions using server-side data, and treat client checks and anticheat alerts as signals rather than proof.

What FiveM anticheat can—and cannot—do

An anticheat resource is one layer of a server’s defenses, not a guarantee that every cheat will be detected or every legitimate player will be cleared. Cfx.re’s security guidance stresses that event checks improve security even when an anticheat is strong. That matters because players can trigger events across client/server contexts, and a poorly protected server event can expose valuable actions regardless of what a detection resource is watching. Cfx.re’s Secure Your Events guide puts it plainly: “Even if you build a strong anti-cheat, adding checks on server events makes them more secure.”

The reviewed official guidance does not provide a measured detection rate, false-positive rate, or basis for ranking third-party anticheats. Treat claims about a product’s performance as claims to verify, not as a guarantee established by Cfx.re.

Myths and facts about FiveM anticheat

Myth: Installing anticheat makes event security unnecessary

Fact: The server must still protect its events. Validate each consequential action on the server, even if an anticheat resource is installed.

Myth: A client-side check proves a player is clean

Fact: Cfx.re warns that client checks can be overridden. They may contribute a signal, but they should not be the security boundary for money, inventory, permissions, or other important state.

Myth: Every event should be networked

Fact: Network an event only when communication across client/server contexts is needed. Events that are meant to stay within one context should use a local handler.

Myth: Every community anticheat is officially endorsed

Fact: Cfx.re permits resources subject to its terms; that is not a universal endorsement of every product or practice. Its policy identifies protection rackets and global ban lists as disallowed. Read the current Cfx.re terms before choosing or operating a resource.

Myth: A CnL timeout automatically means a global ban

Fact: Cfx.re’s security guide says a timeout kick does not automatically mean a Global Ban. A timeout can indicate that a player’s connection is unreliable; do not treat it alone as proof of cheating.

Secure events by choosing the right registration

FiveM scripts use events to pass information between parts of a resource and, when needed, between the client and server. The registration method should match the event’s intended scope. Using network registration unnecessarily can expose an event to calls from another context when it was meant to remain local.

  • Use AddEventHandler for an event that should be handled only within the current context.
  • Use RegisterNetEvent when the event genuinely needs client/server communication.

For networked events, assume a player may attempt to call them with unexpected arguments or at an unexpected time. A server handler should independently establish whether the requested action is allowed rather than accepting the client’s account of what happened. Cfx.re documents this distinction and examples in its server security guide.

What to validate on the server

For each networked action that changes the game or a player’s account, check the facts that authorize it using server-side state. A client can request an action; the server decides whether it is valid.

  • Permissions: Confirm the player is authorized for the requested command or action.
  • Money and transactions: Check the player’s current server-side balance, the transaction’s legitimacy, and whether the amount falls within the expected limits.
  • Inventory: Verify that required items exist and that the requested change is allowed before granting, removing, or consuming them.
  • Location and state: Check server-known position and relevant player or world state before allowing actions that depend on proximity, level, or other conditions.
  • Inputs and limits: Validate values and enforce reasonable limits on what a request can change.

Do not use client-submitted money, inventory, position, or permission claims as the authority for a decision. The checks should reflect the rules of your server and the action being requested.

Built-in protections and FXServer version caveats

FXServer has configuration options related to security, including block_net_game_event. Cfx.re’s security guide says some listed protections are enabled by default on FXServer build 8450 and higher, while command references can specify their own build thresholds and current defaults. That makes a copied convar setting potentially misleading: its effect can depend on the option and the build you are actually running.

Before changing a security option, check the current server commands reference alongside the security guide, and confirm your FXServer build. Cfx.re advises owners not to change protections without understanding their behavior.

A practical server-security checklist

  1. Review event registrations. Keep local events local with AddEventHandler; use RegisterNetEvent only for cross-context communication.
  2. Audit consequential handlers. For each networked event that affects money, inventory, permissions, location-dependent actions, or player state, identify which server-side facts authorize it.
  3. Validate and constrain requests. Reject requests that fail permission, state, or value checks; do not let client-submitted data decide the outcome.
  4. Check your build and configuration. Compare your running FXServer build and settings with the current official command reference before changing convars.
  5. Investigate before enforcement. Review logs and the evidence behind an alert or timeout. Do not treat a client check or CnL timeout alone as conclusive proof.
  6. Assess resource policy and operations. Check a resource’s terms compliance, compatibility with your server and scripts, evidence handling, appeal process, false-positive safeguards, maintenance, and support.

How to evaluate a third-party anticheat

No named third-party product is established by the official material here as the best choice. Compare candidates on criteria that affect your own server, and ask for evidence rather than relying on a broad “secure” claim.

  • Scope: What behaviors does it claim to detect, and what is outside its coverage?
  • Responsibilities: Which protections run client-side and which depend on server-side checks?
  • Compatibility: Does it support your FXServer build and the resources you operate?
  • Evidence and appeals: Can staff review why an alert occurred, and can a player contest an enforcement decision?
  • False-positive safeguards: How are uncertain detections handled, and can staff investigate before imposing a ban?
  • Maintenance and policy: Is the resource maintained, and do its practices comply with Cfx.re’s terms?

Hosting is not anticheat protection: a hosting service does not replace safe event design, server-side validation, or a careful enforcement process.
