The safest approach is to identify the exact message first, check both service-status pages, and only then try targeted fixes. Reinstalling GTA V should not be your first response to a 522.

What error 22 and error 522 actually mean
The historically documented message is:
An error occurred while checking the bootstrapper version (22, requested URL returned error 522).
In that message, 22 is the FiveM client/bootstrapper error number, while 522 is the HTTP response returned by the requested URL. They are commonly treated as two separate FiveM errors, but the official forum reports describe them as one combined failure during the bootstrapper or update check.

A 522 in this context means that FiveM could not successfully complete its request to the remote update service. It does not automatically prove that GTA V is corrupted, that your FiveM installation must be reinstalled, or that every FiveM service is offline.
Cfx.re historically acknowledged a related service incident through its status system in April 2021. The original discussion is preserved in the Cfx.re error 22 and error 522 thread. That is evidence of a past official acknowledgement—not confirmation of a current outage.

FiveM’s Cfx account authorization and Rockstar game authentication are related parts of the launch process, but they are not interchangeable. The official installation guide describes signing in with a Cfx account, while FiveM also relies on information verified through Rockstar Online Services.

The status snapshot available for this report showed FiveM, Cfx.re platform services, Keymaster, CnL, IDMS, and related services as operational. Rockstar’s displayed status also showed Cfx Authentication and FiveM as operational. Treat that as a service-health signal, not a guarantee that every region, account, endpoint, and client build is working.

An operational status page can coexist with a real failure when the issue is intermittent, regional, account-specific, limited to one endpoint, newly emerging, or caused by local filtering. Refresh both pages after several minutes if the problem began suddenly.
Fix FiveM error 22 or error 522
- Save the complete message. Take a screenshot and record any URL or error identifier. The exact wording distinguishes a bootstrapper problem from an authentication-session problem.
- Check both status pages. If either service shows an incident, waiting is usually safer than repeatedly reinstalling or deleting client data.
- Test the referenced endpoint. Historical Cfx.re troubleshooting suggested opening https://mirrors.fivem.net/client in a browser when the bootstrapper reported error 22. This is only a basic reachability test; a browser response does not prove that FiveM can complete its own request.
- Retry after a short interval. A sudden failure on an installation that worked previously is more consistent with a transient service or network-path problem than with automatically corrupted GTA V files.
- Try another network if practical. A phone hotspot can help distinguish a local routing or filtering problem from a wider service problem. Do not treat a successful hotspot test as proof of the exact cause.
- Temporarily bypass network filters for one controlled test. Disable a VPN, proxy, DNS filter, corporate firewall, or aggressive antivirus only long enough to test. Restore protection immediately. If the test identifies the cause, create appropriate exceptions for FiveM, GTA V, and the Rockstar Games Launcher instead of leaving security tools disabled.
- Use the official installer. Download FiveM through its official channel rather than an unofficial mirror or “repair” utility.
A remote endpoint returning 522 is not a sufficient reason to reinstall GTA V. Repair or reinstall FiveM becomes more reasonable when files are missing, the official installer is damaged, security software has quarantined components, or current official support specifically recommends a clean installation.
Fix “Couldn’t establish a game authentication session”
- Close the complete launch chain. Exit FiveM, GTA V, and the Rockstar Games Launcher. In Task Manager, close leftover FiveM, GTA, and Rockstar Launcher processes.
- Open Rockstar Games Launcher first. Sign in, launch the base GTA V installation once, and close it after it reaches the game. Then start FiveM again.
- Confirm the account path. Make sure the Rockstar account that owns or launches GTA V and the intended Cfx account are being used. Browser authorization should return to the same FiveM installation.
- Test every-server versus one-server failure. If no server works, continue with authentication and client checks. If other servers work, the target server is more likely to be the problem.
- Test without filtering software. Temporarily bypass VPNs, proxies, restrictive DNS services, and antivirus web or application blocking. Cfx.re notes that some antivirus products can interfere with ROS entitlement-token generation.
- Record any
au_...identifier. An authentication ID may not produce useful search results, but it is valuable when submitting a support request.
Use the official Cfx.re client-issues documentation for targeted cleanup only when your symptom matches the documented case:

Those steps are not guaranteed fixes for every authentication message. Do not delete the entire FiveM data directory as a first move: it can remove useful diagnostic information and force large downloads.

If browser sign-in finishes but FiveM keeps waiting
A browser may show successful authorization while FiveM remains on “Awaiting sign-in confirmation”. A July 2026 Cfx.re GitHub discussion recorded this type of GTAV Enhanced handoff problem, but it was a bug report rather than a confirmed universal diagnosis or guaranteed fix.
Try the default browser and one alternative browser, confirm that FiveM came from the official source, and capture the client version and launcher logs. Avoid registry edits unless an official support response directs you to make them. Manually registering a fivem:// protocol should not be presented as an official solution; the cited discussion reported that it did not resolve the underlying issue.
GTAV Legacy and GTAV Enhanced are not interchangeable cases
Before following an older FiveM guide, identify whether you use GTAV Legacy or GTAV Enhanced. In July 2026, a Cfx.re development discussion described a FiveM for GTAV Enhanced hotfix that changed the connection handshake and required server owners to update to a current Cfx server build. Clients on that build could fail to connect to servers still running an older build.
This means an Enhanced-only connection problem may be a compatibility issue rather than a damaged client or global authentication outage. The handshake discussion is version-specific, and active GitHub discussions should not be treated as proof that every Enhanced authentication error has the same cause.

When only one server fails
If you can join other servers, stop treating the problem as a general FiveM authentication failure. Possible causes include an outdated server artifact, a server-side firewall or proxy, a server-specific authentication problem, or a Legacy/Enhanced compatibility mismatch.

Players should contact the affected server’s staff when other servers work. Cfx.re also documents support limits for outdated server artifacts in its end-of-support documentation.
What not to do
- Do not assume every error 522 means all FiveM servers are down.
- Do not assume every authentication failure is a Rockstar outage.
- Do not reinstall GTA V immediately after seeing a bootstrapper 522.
- Do not delete every FiveM folder without preserving logs and understanding what will be removed.
- Do not leave antivirus or firewall protection disabled after testing.
- Do not install unofficial “authentication repair” tools.
- Do not pay a third party that claims it can repair a FiveM account or authentication service.
- Do not treat an error ID by itself as a diagnosis.
When to contact support
Contact Cfx.re support or use the relevant official support forum when the failure affects every server, persists across restarts and networks, or produces a repeatable entitlement-token or authentication error. Include:
- The exact full error message and any
au_...ID. - Whether you use GTAV Legacy or GTAV Enhanced.
- Your GTA V store or platform, Windows version, and FiveM version.
- Whether all servers fail or only one.
- The result of the Cfx.re and Rockstar status checks, including the time checked.
- Whether the base GTA V installation launches normally.
- Relevant screenshots and logs.
That information helps separate a bootstrapper endpoint problem, an account or browser handoff issue, a Rockstar entitlement problem, a local security filter, and a server-specific failure.
