If a launcher shows Install even though a game folder is still on your PC, do not delete that folder. First confirm the files and drive are present, then use the launcher’s own library controls. Steam can re-index an existing library, Epic Games Launcher has different behavior between its standard and Early Preview versions, and GOG GALAXY can verify files after you point it to the correct installation folder. If the game is missing from the account library entirely, changing storage will not solve the problem.
Identify what has actually failed
There are two different problems that look alike. A game can be visible in your account library but marked Install, or the title can be absent from the library altogether. The first is usually a path, drive, launcher-database, or file-recognition problem. The second is usually an account, filter, cache, entitlement, or platform problem.

- Open File Explorer and confirm that the game’s folder still exists. Note the drive letter and the complete path.
- Check whether the drive is connected consistently. An external disk that disappears, changes drive letter, or wakes slowly can make a valid installation look missing.
- Identify the exact launcher: Steam, the standard Epic Games Launcher, Epic Games Launcher Early Preview, or GOG GALAXY.
- Do not uninstall the game or delete its folder while troubleshooting. A reinstall may overwrite files that could otherwise be re-indexed or verified.

Make Steam recognize an existing installation
Steam Support explains that games may appear uninstalled when Steam no longer recognizes their installation files. The usual fix is to add the library that already contains the game rather than creating a new empty library.

- Open Steam.
- Choose Steam > Settings > Downloads > Steam Library Folders. In current Steam builds this opens the Storage Manager view.
- Press the + button to add a library.
- Select the library folder on the drive that contains the existing installation. The standard Windows location is
C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamappscommon, although your library may be elsewhere. - Let Steam finish adding the location, then return to Library and check the game.
Select the library root that contains the steamapps structure, not an unrelated parent folder or a second nested copy. If you have several Steam libraries, add each drive that may contain the game.

Use an install operation to trigger re-indexing
If the game is still marked uninstalled after the folder is added, click Install for that title and choose the library where the existing files reside. Steam can compare the requested installation with the files already there and re-index them instead of downloading everything. Watch the download screen: a short discovery or allocation phase is expected, while a full download indicates that Steam did not match the existing path.
Canceling midway can leave a partially prepared directory. If Steam starts downloading to a new location, pause it, confirm the selected library and folder, and correct the path before allowing a large download to continue.
Verify files after Steam recognizes the game
- Right-click the game in Library and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the check to complete before launching.
Steam says verification can take several minutes. It compares local content and replaces missing or damaged files, so a small download after verification is normal. Run verification for one game at a time rather than starting checks for multiple titles simultaneously.
When an external drive is the real cause
If the library is on an external drive that repeatedly disconnects or is not ready when Steam starts, Steam may lose track of it. Steam’s support guidance is to install Steam and the games on an internal drive instead when this issue involves an external drive. That recommendation addresses unreliable storage access; it does not repair an account entitlement, a hidden game, a filter, or a wrong library path.

Standard Epic Games Launcher: know the limitation
The standard Epic Games Launcher does not currently support detecting previously installed game files. If the launcher was removed, Windows was reinstalled, or the library database was lost, Epic’s supported approach is to install the game again through Library. Community file-copy methods are not officially supported and may fail from one game to another.
Supported reinstall path
- Open the Epic Games Launcher and sign in to the account that owns or claimed the game.
- Open Library and select the title.
- Choose Install.
- Select the drive and installation folder you want Epic to use.
- Allow the launcher to complete its installation process.
Keep the old folder until you know whether Epic has created a new installation and the game launches correctly. A true reinstall can require the full download, so check available disk space and bandwidth first.
Unsupported file-preservation workaround
Epic documents a workaround that sometimes avoids downloading the entire game, but it is a recovery attempt, not a scan feature and not guaranteed to work.
- Start installing the same game from Epic Library.
- Let the download run for a few seconds, then pause it.
- Exit Epic completely from its system-tray icon; closing only the window may leave the launcher running.
- Open the new download directory Epic created.
- Copy the existing game files into that directory, keeping the folder structure intact.
- Restart Epic and resume the installation.
Epic warns that a small download may still be required and that the method may not work for every game. If the launcher restarts the download from zero, stop before deleting anything and decide whether the supported full reinstall is preferable.

Epic Games Launcher Early Preview can scan installed games
Epic Games Launcher Early Preview is separate from the standard launcher for this purpose. Epic says Early Preview supports detecting previously installed files, while the feature is not supported in the standard release.
- Open the Epic launcher icon menu.
- Choose Settings.
- Open the Library section.
- Select Scan for installed games.
- Allow the scan to finish, then check the title in Library.
The scan only helps when the files remain on an accessible drive and the signed-in account has the corresponding entitlement. It cannot restore a game that belongs to another account or a title removed from your library for an account-related reason.
When an Epic game is missing from Library
Do this branch when the title itself is absent, not merely labeled Install. File locations cannot make an account-owned title reappear.

Refresh the launcher and clear its web cache
- Exit Epic Games Launcher completely from the tray icon.
- Start it again and check Library.
- If the title is still absent, clear the launcher’s webcache using Epic’s cache-clearing option or support procedure, then restart the launcher.
A stale cache can hide current library data even when the purchase is valid.

Check account and platform identity
- Confirm that you are signed in to the account that purchased or claimed the game.
- If you originally used an external sign-in method, use that same method rather than creating or selecting a different Epic account.
- Confirm that the operating-system and platform version match the title you are looking for.
- Check whether the purchase was refunded.
Reset Library filters and hidden status
- Open Library.
- Uncheck the Installed filter; an uninstalled game will not appear while that filter is active.
- Reset any genre, platform, or custom filters.
- Refresh the Library view.
- Check the hidden-library area and unhide the title if necessary.
Other entitlement cases
Epic also lists limited-time builds, revoked fraudulent codes, and purchases made as gifts for someone else as reasons a title may not appear in your library. In those cases, repairing a local folder or moving the game to an SSD cannot restore access; the account or transaction status must be resolved first.

GOG GALAXY provides a supported verification tool for a game whose files are present but may be incomplete or damaged.
Run Verify / Repair
- Select the game in GOG GALAXY.
- Open its customization menu.
- Choose Manage installation.
- Select Verify / Repair.
- Wait for the comparison and any redownload to finish.
GOG says GALAXY compares local files with copies on its servers and redownloads discrepancies. Verification may therefore use network data even when most of the installation is intact.
Point GALAXY to the correct installation folder
- Open the cogwheel Settings panel.
- Choose Installing, updating.
- Check Games installation folder.
- Set it to the drive and folder that contain the library.
- Review Temporary game update folder and Other downloads folder if free space or permissions are causing failures.
Changing the default folder affects where GALAXY installs or updates games; it does not change ownership. If the game belongs to a different account, sign in to the account that owns it before troubleshooting storage.

Choose the right fix without risking the files

Common symptoms and targeted fixes
The folder exists, but the launcher chooses a new empty folder
Stop the download, inspect the selected library location, and select the folder that already contains the launcher’s expected structure. Do not point a launcher at a random subfolder inside the game unless its instructions specifically require that path.
The drive letter changed
Windows may assign a different letter after reconnecting an external disk. Restore the original letter in Windows Disk Management if other applications depend on it, or use the launcher’s storage settings to add the library under its current letter. Keep the drive connected while the launcher is running.
The launcher sees the game but reports corrupted content
Use Steam’s Verify integrity of game files or GOG GALAXY’s Verify / Repair. These operations are safer than deleting and reinstalling the entire directory because they identify and replace only missing or mismatched data when possible.

The game launches only when the drive is connected late
That points to storage availability rather than ownership. Connect the drive before starting the launcher, prevent the drive from entering an aggressive sleep state, and consider an internal SSD if the external device continues disconnecting. An SSD will not fix account, cache, filter, hidden-library, refund, or code-status problems.
Windows was reinstalled and every launcher says Install
First confirm that the old game folders survived on the data drive. Then follow the launcher-specific path: add the library in Steam, use Early Preview’s scan if applicable, use GOG’s folder and repair controls, or plan for Epic standard’s supported reinstall. Reinstalling the launcher does not automatically recreate its old library database.
Prevent the problem next time
- Keep each launcher’s library on a consistently mounted drive.
- Record the library path before changing disks or reinstalling Windows.
- Do not rename or move a game folder while the launcher is downloading or updating it.
- Use the launcher’s own move-library or storage controls instead of dragging folders between drives.
- After a major Windows or launcher change, open the launcher once with the game drive connected so it can update its library records.
- Keep enough free space for temporary files and verification downloads.
- Back up saves separately when a game stores them outside its installation folder.
The deciding question is always whether the launcher can associate three things: an accessible folder, valid game files, and the signed-in account’s entitlement. Fix the missing piece in that order. Storage changes solve only the first two; no drive upgrade can substitute for the correct account or library visibility settings.
