If your playlist is an FFmpeg concat script, its default safety check can reject paths containing characters outside a portable set. For a trusted local script, try -safe 0 before the relevant -i input. That is a concat-demuxer remedy—not proof that FFmpeg categorically cannot read Devanagari.
First identify which layer is failing
A “playlist” can mean an FFmpeg concat script, a different playlist format, or simply a command that passes a file path directly. The concat-specific instructions below apply only to a text script with file directives. Before changing flags, compare the exact filename and directory on disk with the path FFmpeg receives, including spelling, extension, and any spaces or punctuation.
The handoff matters too: a shell, batch file, or application may pass a path differently than expected. The available FFmpeg documentation describes concat path syntax and its safety check; it does not establish a Devanagari-specific defect. The actual command, operating system, FFmpeg version, playlist type, and complete error message are needed to identify the cause in a particular setup.
If the playlist is an FFmpeg concat script
Check the script format and path syntax
The concat demuxer reads a text script containing file paths and directives. Its first line must be exactly ffconcat version 1.0, with no byte-order mark. For paths containing spaces or special characters, use the documented quoting or escaping syntax. For example, a trusted local script could be:

file 'अगला गीत.mp4'Check that each listed file exists at the location the script specifies. A path that looks correct in the script can still be wrong relative to the working directory or the script’s location.
Try disabling the safe-path restriction for trusted files
The concat demuxer’s safe option defaults to 1. With that setting, it rejects paths that do not meet its documented portable-character rules. If the script and files are trusted, set -safe 0 as an input option before -i:

ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt -c copy output.mp4-safe 0 accepts any filename, so use it only with playlist content you trust. Keep paths correctly quoted or escaped in the script; disabling the safety check does not fix an incorrectly written path. The example uses stream copy, which is appropriate only when the inputs and chosen output container are compatible with that workflow.
If FFmpeg opens the file but still stops
A path fix only addresses opening the file. Concat demuxing also requires compatible input streams, codecs, and time bases. If the error changes after applying the path fix, read the complete new diagnostic rather than treating every failure as a filename problem.

- Path or open error: recheck the exact path, script syntax, and how the invoking shell or application passes it.
- Unsafe filename error: confirm that this is the concat demuxer, then consider
-safe 0for trusted playlist content. - Format or codec error: investigate the media’s container and codec separately. A readable container does not guarantee that its codec is supported.
- Different playlist format: do not assume concat options or script syntax apply. Check the documentation for the format FFmpeg is actually consuming.
If your installed build does not behave like the current documentation, check its version with ffmpeg -version. The version was not specified for this symptom, and available options can differ across builds.
