How to Keep an FFmpeg YouTube Playlist Stream Alive When a Video Fails

yt-dlp can continue to the next playlist video after a download error, but keeping FFmpeg and a YouTube publishing connection alive requires separate workflow handling.

For a playlist download, yt-dlp can continue to the next video when one item fails: use --no-abort-on-error, which the current yt-dlp README describes as the default. That option does not guarantee that FFmpeg or a YouTube live connection will stay uninterrupted. Playlist recovery, FFmpeg process continuity, and live-output continuity are separate problems.

What the continuation option does—and does not do

yt-dlp handles playlist entries and their downloads; FFmpeg reads the inputs you give it and produces an output. The yt-dlp README describes --no-abort-on-error as continuing with the next video after a download error, including to skip unavailable playlist videos, and currently lists it as the default. If your installed version or configuration differs, check the behavior rather than assuming the default applies.

--ignore-errors has a separate documented scope: download and postprocessing errors. It is not a general guarantee that a separate FFmpeg process or publishing connection will survive every failure. Avoid stacking flags as if they solve the same problem.

FFmpeg’s command-line documentation describes it as a media converter that reads inputs and writes outputs. Its options generally apply to the next specified input or output, so command ordering matters. FFmpeg does not become a fault-tolerant YouTube playlist queue simply because it appears in a pipeline.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Keep a playlist download moving

  1. Confirm yt-dlp is processing the playlist. Check that the URL and playlist-selection options include the entries you intend to process. A video URL can also be associated with a playlist, and selection controls may change what yt-dlp processes.
  2. Check your installed version and configuration. If the job stops on an unavailable entry despite the documented continuation behavior, inspect the version and any loaded configuration that could alter options. The yt-dlp FAQ recommends current-version diagnostics when reporting reproducible problems.
  3. Set the intended behavior explicitly if needed. Add --no-abort-on-error to the yt-dlp command when you want it to proceed to the next video after a download error. The option is documented as the default in the current README, but making it explicit can clarify a script’s intent.
  4. Read the log after a failure. Verify that yt-dlp reported the failed entry and attempted later playlist entries. A continuation option does not establish that every type of failure will be recovered.
  5. Check playlist failure thresholds. yt-dlp documents controls that can stop traversal after a configured number of failures. A threshold can therefore end a job even when continuation is enabled.

If the goal is a live FFmpeg output

Continuing to the next playlist item is not the same as keeping an encoder process alive, and neither alone guarantees that a YouTube publishing connection stays open. yt-dlp’s documented example of streaming a video to a player through standard output (-o -) concerns one video; it does not establish seamless output across a playlist whose items may have different formats, codecs, durations, or failures.

For a live workflow, assign playlist traversal and per-item recovery to yt-dlp or a wrapper, and assign media processing and output to FFmpeg. A wrapper can resolve one item at a time, provide a valid input to FFmpeg, catch an item-level failure, and decide whether to continue, retry, or restart. That is an engineering pattern, not a universally proven command recipe: the right design depends on the media and destination.

Decisions the workflow must make

  • Failure policy: distinguish an unavailable or private item from a missing format, a transient network or fragment failure, and an FFmpeg or output error. Skipping an unavailable entry is not the same as retrying a transient failure.
  • Input compatibility: determine how transitions between items with different codecs, containers, resolutions, or timestamps will be handled. A playlist option does not make unlike media compatible.
  • Timing: decide whether a gap is acceptable when an item fails or the next item takes time to resolve, and how timestamps should continue across transitions.
  • Connection policy: decide whether FFmpeg should remain open, restart for an item, or follow another explicit output policy. Confirm how the target handles any disconnect; the cited documentation does not prescribe a universal reconnection method.

Test the actual path before relying on it

  1. Record the yt-dlp version, FFmpeg version, command, configuration, and destination settings used by the real job.
  2. Run the workflow against a short playlist that includes a representative unavailable item, followed by a playable one.
  3. Check whether yt-dlp attempted the later item, whether FFmpeg remained alive or restarted as designed, and whether the destination connection stayed open.
  4. Inspect output playback and logs for gaps, timestamp problems, format incompatibility, or a dropped publishing connection. Repeat with a representative transient failure if retries matter.

Do not promise viewers uninterrupted playback until the complete workflow has passed these checks with the actual input types and output target.

Common failure causes and fixes

Symptom What to check Practical response
The job exits on a private, removed, or unavailable playlist entry. Whether yt-dlp is processing the intended playlist, its installed version and configuration, and whether continuation is enabled. Use or explicitly set --no-abort-on-error; inspect the log to confirm later entries are attempted. The option is not a guarantee for every failure class.
A video URL processes fewer items than expected. Playlist selection controls and whether the URL is being treated as one video or as part of a playlist. Adjust the URL or selection controls so yt-dlp traverses the intended entries.
The playlist advances, but FFmpeg exits or the live output drops. Whether the error occurred in FFmpeg or the destination, and whether the wrapper manages item transitions and output recovery. Handle those failures in the wrapper or output design; playlist continuation alone does not keep the encoder or publishing connection alive.
FFmpeg fails when the next item begins. Input format, codec, timestamps, and command option ordering. Make the transition strategy explicit and test it with the media types in the playlist. FFmpeg options generally apply to the next input or output, so verify their placement.
A job stops after several failed entries. yt-dlp’s configured playlist failure threshold. Review the threshold against the intended queue policy; a traversal limit is not a live-output recovery setting.
