Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →First identify what is stuttering: a hitch in the picture during solo play points to local performance; teleporting players or delayed shots point to network latency; menu control flicker can be an input-device conflict; and failed matchmaking has its own causes. The tests below separate those problems before you change drivers, router settings, or hardware.
Identify the symptom before changing settings
| What you see | Likely category | First test |
|---|---|---|
| The whole image hitches, especially during combat | Local frame-time or graphics issue | Run a solo mission and lower demanding graphics settings one at a time. |
| Players or enemies teleport, shots register late, or movement snaps backward | Network or host latency | Have another player host; compare with crossplay temporarily off. |
| Menus flicker or controls rapidly switch between keyboard and controller | Input-device conflict | Disconnect or disable the controller and relaunch. |
| Matchmaking finds nobody or repeatedly fails | Matchmaking, platform services, NAT, population, or mods | Try a direct friend invite to a private lobby. |
| “Cannot join game” or a similar connection error | Network, platform, or session issue | Restart Steam and the game, then test a direct invite. |
| Only one mission or DLC campaign fails | Content ownership or version mismatch | Confirm every player owns the required DLC and has updated the game. |
The key comparison is solo versus online: if a solo mission also hitches, the internet is unlikely to be the primary cause. If solo play is smooth but an online match rubber-bands, focus on the host and network.
Establish a clean baseline
Make a controlled comparison before changing several settings at once:
- Exit Aliens: Fireteam Elite completely, restart Steam, then reboot the PC.
- Disconnect unnecessary USB devices, particularly controllers, wheels, HOTAS equipment, virtual input devices, and USB audio hardware. A controller can remain connected over Bluetooth even after its cable is unplugged.
- Temporarily close overlays and capture or injection software: Steam Overlay, Discord Overlay, NVIDIA App/GeForce overlay, AMD Adrenalin overlay, Xbox Game Bar, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner, OBS, and similar tools. This is a diagnostic test; disabling them also removes their chat, recording, or monitoring features.
- Run one solo mission with bots. The developer FAQ says solo play with bots is supported.
- If solo play works, form a private fireteam with a known friend and run a short mission.
- Try public matchmaking only after solo and private play are understood.
Record the result after each test. Changing one variable at a time makes it possible to identify a cause instead of merely ending up with a different configuration.

Check the controller if menus or input are stuttering
A community-maintained PCGamingWiki troubleshooting entry associates a specific input-switching stutter with the game alternating between a connected gamepad and keyboard/mouse. It is a useful first test for menu flicker or controls that keep changing, not evidence that every kind of stutter has the same cause. See the PCGamingWiki entry.
- Close the game and unplug the controller. If it uses Bluetooth, disconnect it there as well.
- Relaunch using keyboard and mouse only. If the problem disappears, reconnect the controller after reaching the main menu.
- If the issue returns, try a different USB port, or compare wired and Bluetooth connections.
- As further tests, disable Steam Input for this game or close third-party controller remappers.
- Check for duplicate virtual controllers created by tools such as DS4Windows or similar software.
These tests can identify an input conflict; they do not establish that Steam Input or any one remapper is definitively responsible.
Verify the installation and remove matchmaking conflicts
Verify Steam files
- Open Steam Library.
- Right-click Aliens: Fireteam Elite and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files, then select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to finish, restart the game, and repeat the test that failed.
If repaired files become corrupted again, check whether security software is quarantining or blocking game files. If the installation is on a nearly full, failing, external, or unusually slow drive, consider moving it to a healthy local SSD. Do not delete save data as a troubleshooting shortcut: doing so can risk progression.

Restore unmodified files before public matchmaking
The developer says modified game files are not supported for public matchmaking. Remove mods or file replacements, then verify the installation through Steam and test the unmodified game. Private matchmaking may remain available to players using the same mods, but that does not make those files compatible with public matchmaking. Read the developer FAQ.
Check whether the PC meets the published baseline
Steam lists these requirements for the PC version. They are published targets, not a guarantee of smooth frame times on every current Windows configuration; the specifications date from a game released on Steam on August 23, 2021.
| Minimum | Recommended | |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 | Windows 10 |
| Processor | Intel i5-2500K or AMD Athlon X4 950 | Intel i5-7400 or Ryzen 5 1600AF |
| Memory | 8 GB RAM | 16 GB RAM |
| Graphics | GTX 760 4 GB or Radeon R9 285 4 GB | GTX 1060 6 GB or RX 480 8 GB |
| Other listed requirements | DirectX 11; 30 GB storage; broadband connection | DirectX 11; 30 GB storage |
| Published performance target | 1080p, low settings, approximately 30 FPS | 1080p, high settings, approximately 60 FPS |
Steam’s game support page lists these requirements. It specifies Windows 10; that listing alone does not establish a Windows 11 compatibility guarantee. Meeting the listed baseline also does not promise perfectly even frame pacing.

Tune graphics for consistent frame times
Test graphics changes in solo play, changing one setting at a time and noting whether the hitch improves. A lower average frame rate is different from uneven frame times: a counter can show an acceptable average while the image still pauses irregularly.
- Set a stable frame-rate cap slightly below the monitor’s refresh rate.
- Compare exclusive fullscreen, borderless fullscreen, and windowed mode if the game offers them.
- Lower shadow quality, effects, post-processing, anti-aliasing, and view distance before reducing resolution.
- Disable motion blur if camera movement feels like stutter.
- Turn V-Sync off temporarily to diagnose pacing; if tearing appears, test it again enabled.
- Use the GPU control panel’s default game profile. Temporarily remove forced sharpening, frame generation, low-latency modes, or custom profiles.
- Monitor GPU and CPU usage, VRAM, system RAM, temperatures, and frame times with one monitoring tool rather than several overlays.
If the average FPS is low, reduced settings may help or the system may be below the desired performance target. If frame times remain uneven despite an acceptable average, look for background conflicts, input switching, or thermal and resource constraints. Graphics changes cannot fix network rubber-banding.

Test drivers and Windows background software
- Install a suitable current driver from the official NVIDIA driver download or AMD support channel.
- If the problem began immediately after a driver update, test the previous stable driver rather than assuming the newest one is better.
- Install pending regular Windows updates; avoid preview or Insider builds as a troubleshooting baseline.
- On a laptop, confirm Windows is running the game on the dedicated GPU rather than integrated graphics.
- Try a high-performance power profile only as a test. It can raise power use and heat, so monitor temperatures.
- If the issue persists, use selective startup to look for a background conflict: press Win + R, enter
msconfig, and follow Focus’s PC/Steam support guidance. Re-enable startup programs in groups or one at a time to isolate a conflict.
Focus’s PC–Steam support page discusses selective startup and cautions that Insider Preview builds may not be fully compatible. The page may redirect to sign-in, so its historical guidance should not be mistaken for a guarantee that every instruction is currently visible.

Separate multiplayer latency from matchmaking failure
Swap hosts in a private lobby
- Start a private fireteam and invite one friend through Steam or the relevant platform’s friends system.
- Run a short mission, then have the other player host and repeat.
- Compare a Steam-only group with a mixed-platform group if crossplay is involved.
The developer describes multiplayer as peer-to-peer, so the host’s connection can affect the group. If play works with one host but not another, investigate the failing host’s connection, Wi-Fi, firewall, NAT, or platform session. If private play fails for every host, check files, mods, platform services, security software, and account or platform restrictions. If private play works but public matchmaking does not, basic PC rendering is less likely to be the cause; public availability, crossplay, regional population, or compatibility may be involved. The game supports online co-op and cross-platform multiplayer, according to Steam’s support listing.
Compare crossplay and connection quality
- When everyone is on the same platform, turn crossplay off temporarily as a comparison. It may reduce platform variables, but can also shrink the available matchmaking pool.
- If crossplay is needed, test with the most reliable connection as host. Prefer a wired player over someone on unstable Wi-Fi.
- Compare the same mission with a Steam-only lobby and a mixed-platform lobby where possible.
- Use Ethernet for the host if available. It can improve connection consistency, but cannot repair a poor ISP route or another player’s connection.
These are diagnostic comparisons, not guaranteed cures. The developer’s FAQ specifically notes peer-to-peer hosting and recommends testing crossplay and host quality when latency is a problem.
Check local network and security settings carefully
- Restart the modem/router and PC, then retry a private invite.
- Allow Steam and the game through Windows Firewall. If testing third-party antivirus network protection, disable it only briefly and restore protection afterward.
- Avoid VPNs, mobile hotspots, and restrictive work or school networks during testing; they can add routing or NAT complications.
- UPnP changes how devices request router mappings; enable it only if you understand the security trade-off.
- Do not blindly forward ports. No current game-specific port numbers are established here, and incorrect forwarding can create security or configuration problems.
Check DLC and installation versions for mission-specific failures
If base-game missions work but a Pathogen campaign mission does not, verify that every player owns and has installed the Pathogen expansion, and that all installations are fully updated. The developer FAQ says players without Pathogen cannot match into its campaign missions. This ownership check is relevant to joining that content, not to general frame stutter. See the developer FAQ.

Escalate with useful details
If the issue survives these comparisons, stop changing unrelated settings and report a reproducible case through the Steam game support route, which identifies Cold Iron Studios/Focus Entertainment as the support route. Include:
- Windows version and build; CPU, GPU, RAM, and storage type; and GPU driver version.
- PC edition/platform and approximate region and connection type.
- Whether solo play stutters, private multiplayer works, and public matchmaking works.
- Who is hosting, whether crossplay is enabled, and the exact error text.
- The affected mission or DLC, plus any mods, overlays, remappers, or capture tools in use.
- The steps that reliably reproduce the problem and which tests changed the result.
The verified support information establishes the game’s requirements and multiplayer model, but does not establish a current patch number, a present server outage, or one universal PC stutter fix. Treat claims of a guaranteed launch option, port-forwarding cure, or blanket crossplay fix with caution.
