If The Alters crashes on Xbox Series X or Series S, start with the low-risk fixes: fully quit the game and remove it from Quick Resume, restart the console, then install any pending game and Xbox updates. If it still crashes, power-cycle the Xbox and reinstall the game before considering anything involving saved data. There is no verified universal Xbox crash fix or official The Alters Xbox known-issues bulletin in the available sources, so treat these as troubleshooting steps—not guaranteed cures.

First, identify when the crash happens

Note whether the game fails at launch, during loading, when you select a save, or after a particular action or location. Also check whether the Xbox returns to the dashboard or shuts down completely, and whether other games crash. These details help distinguish a game or save problem from a wider console issue.

  • Crash after Quick Resume: fully quit the game and launch it fresh.
  • Crash when loading one save: test an earlier save or a new game before changing saved data.
  • Several games crash: check system updates, storage, and ventilation as well as the game.
  • The console powers off: stop repeated testing and check for a ventilation, power, or hardware problem.

Record your console model, how you access the game (Game Pass, Microsoft Store, or disc), the save or in-game location involved, and whether the crash repeats at the same point.

1. Fully quit The Alters and remove it from Quick Resume

  1. Press the Xbox button and open My games & apps.
  2. Open the Quick Resume list and highlight The Alters.
  3. Press the Menu button and select Remove from Quick Resume, if shown. You can also use the equivalent Quit command available on your console.
  4. Start the game again from your library rather than resuming the suspended session.

This is a useful reset attempt when the crash follows resuming the game, but it is not a confirmed The Alters-specific fix.

2. Restart or power-cycle the Xbox

Try a normal restart first

  1. Press the Xbox button.
  2. Go to Profile & system → Power → Restart console.

This restart path is included in Focus Entertainment’s general Xbox Series X|S troubleshooting guidance: Xbox Series X|S troubleshooting.

Use a full power cycle if the restart does not help

  1. Hold the console’s physical power button for about 10 seconds, until it turns off.
  2. Unplug the power cable from the console and wait at least two minutes.
  3. Reconnect the cable, turn on the Xbox, and test the game.

Rockstar documents this two-minute unplug interval as an Xbox Series X|S cache-troubleshooting step and says it does not affect saved data, though some console preferences may reset: clearing the cache on Xbox Series X|S. A power cycle is a general troubleshooting measure, not a promise that every kind of temporary data or crash will be cleared.

3. Install game and Xbox system updates

Check for a game update

  1. Open My games & apps.
  2. Select Manage, then Updates.
  3. Install any pending update for The Alters.
  4. When it finishes, restart the console before testing again.

Check for an Xbox system update

Open the console’s system-update page in Settings and install any update it offers. Exact menu wording can vary by console software version. Focus Entertainment’s Xbox guidance also recommends updating system software before reinstalling a game: Focus Entertainment Xbox troubleshooting.

Historical updates are not proof that a particular crash has been fixed. The Alters launched for Xbox Series X|S and on Game Pass on June 13, 2025, according to 11 bit Studios. The studio’s 2025 quarterly report records hotfix 1.0.2 on June 26, 2025, and patch 1.1.0 on July 14, 2025: 2025 quarterly report. A later free major update also revised the saving system, including saving on exit and at key moments: 11 bit Studios update announcement. These sources do not identify a specific Xbox crash fix or establish the latest Xbox build number; install the update currently offered for your copy rather than relying on an old version number.

4. Check ventilation and test another game

Make sure the Xbox has open airflow, is not inside a tightly enclosed cabinet, and has no dust blocking its exterior vents. Do not cover the Series S ventilation openings. Square Enix includes ventilation among its general Xbox crash checks: Xbox crash troubleshooting.

Test another game. If only The Alters crashes, the game installation, a particular save, or a title-specific bug becomes more plausible. If several games crash, investigate the console, storage, or system software instead. Do not assume overheating from a game crash alone; a temperature warning or repeated console shutdown is stronger evidence of a thermal problem.

5. Reinstall The Alters without deleting your saves

If updates and a restart or power cycle have not helped, reinstalling is a reasonable next step. Focus Entertainment and Square Enix both recommend reinstalling as general Xbox troubleshooting. Uninstalling the game is separate from deleting saved data.

  1. Open My games & apps → See all.
  2. Highlight The Alters and press the Menu button.
  3. Select Manage game and add-ons → Uninstall all, then confirm.
  4. Reinstall it from your Xbox library or the Microsoft Store.
  5. Let the download, updates, and any add-ons finish before launching.

See Focus Entertainment’s Xbox guidance and Square Enix’s Xbox crash guidance. If the game is installed on external storage or an expansion card and you have enough internal space, testing it on the internal SSD can help determine whether the storage location is involved. This is a diagnostic check, not a known The Alters fix.

6. If the crash happens while loading a save

If a new game works but one save repeatedly crashes, the issue may be tied to that save or to a reproducible in-game event. First make sure the game update is installed, then try an earlier save if one is available. Note the save slot, in-game day or chapter, location, and action immediately before the crash.

Do not use save deletion as a routine cache-clearing step. If you inspect saved data, highlight The Alters in My games & apps, press Menu, then open Manage game and add-ons → Saved data. Xbox may offer options such as:

  • Delete from console: removes the local copy; a cloud copy may be able to synchronize again.
  • Delete everywhere: removes the save from console and cloud locations and can permanently destroy progress.

A Bethesda support article explains the material difference between these Xbox save options: Xbox saved-data deletion options. Avoid Delete everywhere. If Xbox presents a cloud-save conflict, stop and determine which copy is current instead of choosing automatically.

7. Optional: clear persistent storage on Series X

Some support guidance documents this additional option for Xbox Series X:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press the Xbox button and open Profile & system → Settings.
  2. Go to Devices & connections → Blu-ray → Persistent storage.
  3. Select Clear persistent storage, if available.

This is a general, optional troubleshooting step—not an official The Alters fix. The menu may not be available in the same way on Series S, so Series S owners should use the full power cycle instead. See Rockstar’s Xbox cache guidance and Bethesda’s Xbox guidance.

8. If several games crash on the same Xbox

  • Install any pending Xbox system update and power-cycle the console.
  • Check available storage and note whether affected games are on the internal drive, an expansion card, or external storage.
  • If practical, test without external storage connected, or try an affected game from internal storage when space permits.
  • Check ventilation and whether the console is shutting down rather than only closing a game.

Several games failing points away from an issue unique to The Alters. Contact Xbox Support before repeatedly reinstalling individual games or attempting a factory reset. A reset is disruptive; do not consider it without first confirming that saves have synchronized and consulting Xbox Support.

9. When to contact support

If the crash remains after a clean reinstall, happens across multiple saves, or repeats at the same point, report it to Xbox Support and the game’s support team. A repeatable crash can indicate a title-specific issue, but the available sources do not establish that every such crash is a known bug.

Include the information that lets support reproduce the problem:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Xbox Series X or Series S, and the Xbox system version shown in Settings.
  • Game version and whether you play through Game Pass, Microsoft Store, or disc.
  • Save slot, in-game day or chapter, location, and the action immediately before the crash.
  • Whether it happens on a fresh launch, after Quick Resume, with an earlier save, or in a new game.
  • How often it happens, whether other games crash, and whether the console shuts down.
  • Whether restarting, updating, power-cycling, or reinstalling changed the behavior.
  • An error code or short video, if available.

Which step should you try next?

What happens Next step
It crashes only after resuming Remove it from Quick Resume, fully quit, and launch fresh.
Only The Alters crashes Update and reinstall the game; compare a new game with the affected save.
Only one save or the same in-game moment crashes Preserve the save, try an earlier save or new game, and report the reproduction details.
Several games crash Check Xbox updates, storage, and ventilation; contact Xbox Support.
The console powers off Stop repeated testing and investigate ventilation, power, or hardware with Xbox Support.
