First identify which component is reading the playlist: FFmpeg’s concat demuxer, an HLS manifest, or a YouTube playlist handled by a downloader such as yt-dlp. They are different layers, and no single FFmpeg flag is documented to skip every kind of bad entry. Use -fflags +discardcorrupt only for damaged packets that FFmpeg can read; it does not repair a missing file, invalid URL, malformed list, or entry that will not open.
Identify which playlist is failing
Before changing options, inspect the command and the input passed to -i. “Playlist” can mean several things, and recovery depends on which program reads it.
- FFmpeg concat-demuxer list: The command commonly includes
-f concat -i list.txt. FFmpeg reads the list and opens its entries in sequence. - HLS manifest: The input is usually an
.m3u8manifest whose entries reference media segments. Check both the manifest and the referenced segment that fails. - YouTube webpage playlist: If a YouTube playlist URL is passed to yt-dlp, the downloader handles playlist entries; FFmpeg may be used later to process media or merge separate audio and video formats. A failure in that workflow is not necessarily an FFmpeg playlist failure. See the yt-dlp FAQ.
For distinctions among FFmpeg’s concat demuxer, concat filter, and concat protocol, see the FFmpeg FAQ.
Capture the first failure and isolate the item
- Keep the exact command and first error. Record the FFmpeg version, operating system, input type, first relevant error line, and any HTTP status. An exit by itself does not establish that the media was corrupt.
- Check whether the same entry fails on each run. Repeated failure at the same segment or file is a reason to inspect that reference and source. If the failing location varies, a transient transport problem is one possibility. This is a troubleshooting heuristic, not proof of the cause; see the FFmpeg-user archive discussion, “ffmpeg retry failed segments”.
- Test the suspect input by itself. Use the same FFmpeg build and, for remote media, the relevant headers or credentials. For HLS, inspect the manifest and test the referenced segment. For a local concat list, back it up, temporarily remove or comment out the suspect line, and see whether later valid entries process. Restore or correct the original list after the test.
- Classify the failure before choosing a fix. It may be a missing or stale reference, malformed playlist syntax, a damaged packet or segment, incompatible streams in a concat operation, or a transport interruption. These failures need different remedies.
Choose a fix for the failure layer
| Approach | Targets | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Validate or filter playlist entries | Missing, stale, or invalid paths and URLs | Requires control of the playlist generator or a wrapper that can omit or replace unavailable entries. |
-fflags +discardcorrupt |
Corrupted packets that FFmpeg can read | May discard damaged content; it does not skip an entry that cannot be opened. |
| HTTP reconnect options | Selected connection, EOF, and HTTP failure conditions | Protocol-specific; retries transport requests but cannot correct an invalid playlist reference. |
| Re-encode or use the concat filter | Inputs with incompatible stream layouts | Requires more processing and can reduce quality compared with stream-copy concatenation. |
Damaged packets: try discardcorrupt only when it fits
The FFmpeg Formats Documentation describes the discardcorrupt input flag as “Discard corrupted packets.” The commonly used spelling is -fflags +discardcorrupt, placed before the input it applies to:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
ffmpeg -fflags +discardcorrupt -i input.m3u8 -c copy output.ts
This example is for a case where the input is readable but contains packets FFmpeg identifies as corrupted. It is not a universal playlist-recovery command: it will not make an invalid URL valid or skip an entry that fails to open. Discarding packets can also leave gaps in the output. See the FFmpeg Formats Documentation.

Network interruptions: use HTTP retries only for HTTP failures
For an input using FFmpeg’s native HTTP protocol, the HTTP protocol documentation lists options including reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_on_http_error, reconnect_streamed, and reconnect_delay_max, along with retry and delay limits. Choose options based on the actual protocol and failure rather than adding every retry setting blindly. Reconnection can retry a transport request; it cannot fix a malformed manifest or stale segment URL.
Bad paths or URLs: fix the list or handle entries individually
If an entry is missing, expired, malformed, or inaccessible, validate it before FFmpeg processes the playlist. If you control the wrapper or playlist generator, omit or replace unavailable entries, or process each item separately so one failure does not terminate the entire job. The reviewed FFmpeg documentation does not promise a universal concat-demuxer switch that skips every failed entry.

Concat inputs: check streams and durations
For the concat demuxer, verify that each file has compatible streams. FFmpeg’s all-in-one documentation, section 20.6, describes the demuxer’s behavior and constraints; it requires the files to have the same streams. Check durations as well: incorrect duration information can shift later timestamps or create artifacts. If inputs have incompatible formats or stream layouts, a re-encode or concat-filter workflow may be more appropriate than stream-copy concatenation. The FFmpeg FAQ explains when the concat approaches apply.

Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option—not an FFmpeg repair tool. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It supports uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, then start the free day.
