How to Set OBS to Reconnect a 24/7 Waterfall Stream After a Disconnect

Set OBS to retry a dropped waterfall stream, distinguish reconnecting from restarting OBS, and troubleshoot common causes of intermittent disconnections.

To reconnect a 24/7 waterfall stream after a dropped connection, open OBS Studio → Settings → Output, switch Output Mode to Advanced if needed, and enable Automatically Reconnect. Choose a retry delay and maximum retry count appropriate to your connection and destination. This makes OBS retry a supported stream output; it does not restart OBS if the app crashes or closes.

Reconnect the stream output in OBS

  1. Open the output settings. In OBS Studio, go to Settings → Output. If the streaming controls are not visible, change Output Mode to Advanced. The precise layout can differ by OBS release and output mode. OBS’s streaming troubleshooting guide covers connection problems; the automatic reconnect controls are documented in its overview and reflected in the English interface labels. [OBS overview]
  2. Enable retries. In the streaming output settings, turn on Automatically Reconnect.
  3. Set a retry delay and limit. Choose Retry Delay and Maximum Retries. There is no single best pair for every platform or network: account for your destination’s reconnect behavior and how long you want OBS to keep trying. OBS’s output API describes a maximum retry count and starting wait; a versioned API reference for OBS 29.0.0 says the wait doubles on each retry. Treat that backoff detail as version-specific, not a guarantee for every current release. [OBS output API reference]
  4. Apply the settings and verify recovery. Test the recovery path before relying on it unattended. A brief, controlled interruption can show whether OBS retries and whether your destination accepts the reconnect. Check the platform’s current guidance separately: OBS does not guarantee that a reconnect preserves one continuous broadcast or archive.

Know what failed before choosing a fix

“Restart” can mean different things. A dropped network connection, a stopped output, OBS closing, and the platform ending its broadcast are separate failures. Automatic reconnect handles supported output disconnections; it is not a crash watchdog and cannot force a platform to keep a broadcast open.

  • Connection dropped, OBS still open: use the automatic reconnect setting, then investigate the network route and bitrate.
  • OBS exited or crashed: OBS must be relaunched by the operating system or a separate process supervisor.
  • Platform ended the broadcast: check that platform’s rules and behavior for your particular stream; OBS settings alone cannot guarantee recovery or continuity.

Restart OBS itself after it exits

OBS documents the launch parameter --startstreaming, which starts streaming when OBS launches. It does not document a built-in crash watchdog on the cited launch-parameter page. To recover from OBS exiting, pair that launch option with a separate operating-system task or process supervisor configured to detect the exit and start OBS again. [OBS launch parameters]

  1. Configure the supervisor to launch the intended OBS installation with --startstreaming.
  2. Make sure OBS opens the intended profile, scene collection, and stream destination. A restart that loads the wrong configuration may fail to resume the waterfall.
  3. Test the whole chain safely: trigger a controlled OBS exit, confirm the supervisor relaunches it, and verify the output reaches the intended platform.
  4. Check logs and destination status after the test. Do not assume that a successful app launch means the stream is live or that the platform preserved the same broadcast.

Troubleshoot dropped frames and intermittent disconnections

OBS identifies an unstable route to the ingest server or a bitrate higher than the connection can sustain as common sources of dropped frames and disconnects. Work through likely causes before replacing hardware. [OBS connection troubleshooting]

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Check the ingest server and bitrate

  • Try a different ingest server if your destination offers a choice.
  • Lower the bitrate to a level your upload connection can sustain consistently, while staying within the platform’s limits.
  • Dynamic bitrate can act as a fallback by reducing quality when conditions worsen, but it does not repair the underlying connection problem.

Check OBS network settings

  • Review Bind to IP if you have a reason to select a particular network interface; otherwise, avoid forcing a setting that does not match your setup.
  • On Windows, OBS lists network optimization/TCP pacing and an IPv4-only test among troubleshooting options. If forcing IPv4 does not help, OBS recommends returning to the IPv4/IPv6 default.

Check the local network path

  • Use wired Ethernet rather than Wi-Fi where practical; OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi can be unstable.
  • Check firewall or antivirus interference, VPNs, bundled network utilities, and outdated network drivers.
  • Inspect the modem, router, network adapter, and cables for a diagnosed fault. A cable replacement is relevant only if the cable is faulty; it will not fix an ISP, ingest-server, software, or bitrate problem.
  • If the connection issue remains, contact your ISP. OBS advises asking the ISP before replacing equipment when you are unsure the hardware is faulty.

Keep a 24/7 waterfall stream sustainable

A reconnect option reduces the need to intervene after some interruptions, but it does not make a home streaming setup self-healing in every failure case. For a long-running stream, test both output reconnect and application restart separately, confirm destination behavior, and monitor the actual broadcast rather than relying only on OBS being open.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the waterfall uses pre-recorded video and goes to YouTube, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud: upload the video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays uploads, not a live camera feed. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
