First determine whether the audio is out of sync by a fixed amount or drifts farther out over time—and whether the problem is already present in the encoded output or only appears in YouTube playback. A fixed offset and progressive drift point to different parts of the pipeline, so there is no single FFmpeg command that reliably fixes every EC2-to-YouTube stream.
Diagnose the sync pattern before changing FFmpeg
Use a short segment with a clear synchronization reference, such as a visible action with an audible cue. Check the same moment in a local recording or other available encoded output and in YouTube playback. If possible, compare samples near the beginning and later in the stream, and ask whether the same mismatch affects multiple viewers.
| What you observe | What to investigate first |
|---|---|
| Audio is offset by roughly the same amount from the start onward | Input start times, initial timestamps, stream mapping, and fixed processing delay. A measured fixed offset may be compensable, but first establish which stream leads. |
| Audio and video start close together, then separate progressively | Ongoing timestamp or rate mismatch, source-clock differences, frame-rate behavior, or discontinuities such as dropped or duplicated frames. |
| Local encoded output is in sync, but YouTube playback is not | Compare controlled playback samples and check YouTube stream health before changing FFmpeg timestamps; ingest or playback behavior may be involved. |
| Only some viewers report a delay, or the apparent delay changes with playback conditions | Check viewer latency, buffering, and network conditions separately from audio-versus-video synchronization. |
This is a diagnostic framework, not evidence of a particular EC2 fault. The information available does not identify an instance type, operating system, FFmpeg build, command, source topology, or measured offset, so it cannot establish an EC2-specific root cause.
Collect the details that locate the fault
Before changing offsets or synchronization modes, save the exact command and record the relevant inputs and outputs. These details show whether audio and video share a timing source and how FFmpeg handles their timestamps.

Check input timing and stream mapping
Separate audio and video inputs
When audio and video come from separate inputs, inspect each input’s timestamp origin and behavior. A webcam and an audio capture device, for example, may not begin on the same clock or at the same instant. Confirm that the intended audio and video streams are mapped to the output; do not assume FFmpeg selected the correct streams just because the command runs.
A 2020 FFmpeg-user mailing-list post describes roughly half a second of audio delay in a webcam-plus-PulseAudio setup after the command argument order changed. That is one report, not proof that input order generally causes desynchronization and not evidence about EC2. Treat it as a reason to inspect a particular command’s inputs, not as a universal rule. Read the mailing-list report.

Use offsets only for a measured fixed error
FFmpeg documents -itsoffset as setting an input time offset. It can be considered when measurements show a stable offset and establish which input needs adjustment. An offset does not correct a mismatch that keeps growing, and applying one without knowing which stream leads can make the result worse. Consult the FFmpeg documentation for the option’s placement and semantics in your command.
Choose timestamp and frame-rate handling deliberately
-fps_mode is per output video stream
The FFmpeg manual describes -fps_mode as a per-output-video-stream choice. passthrough retains demuxer timestamps; cfr duplicates or drops frames to reach a target constant frame rate; vfr passes timestamps or drops frames to avoid duplicate timestamps; and auto selects based on muxer capability. The muxer may modify timestamps later, so inspect the resulting output rather than assuming the option alone guarantees sync. Choose a mode only after examining the source timestamps and the observed frame-rate behavior.

Use -copyts with care
-copyts retains input timestamp values without FFmpeg’s normal sanitizing behavior. That may be useful when the original timing is valid and needs to be preserved; it may also carry a source timing problem through to the output. It is not a general audio-sync fix.
Do not add -re reflexively to a live capture
FFmpeg documents -re (or -readrate 1) as reading an input at its native frame rate, which can be useful for controlling input flow when sending a file as live output. The manual warns that a low read rate on actual capture devices or live streams can cause packet loss. Identify whether the input is a file or a real-time source before changing read-rate behavior. These controls are documented in the FFmpeg manual.

Verify YouTube contribution settings without confusing them with a sync repair
YouTube’s encoder recommendations are a compatibility baseline, not a diagnosis or automatic correction for timestamp errors. Check the output configuration against the current YouTube encoder settings:
- Use constant bitrate (CBR) as recommended by YouTube.
- YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed 4 seconds.
- For advanced audio settings, YouTube lists 44.1 kHz for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1, with 128 kbps stereo and 384 kbps 5.1 audio.
- Test before the event using audio and movement similar to the real stream, then monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages while live.
Check RTMPS connectivity separately
For YouTube RTMPS ingest, verify the rtmps scheme, the correct ingestion endpoint and path, port 443, and the server hostname in TLS SNI. YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guide connects SSL errors and timeouts with checking the protocol, port, hostname/SNI, and TLS setup. These are connection checks, not direct audio-sync remedies. The guide says it was last updated 2026-09-14 UTC.

Tell A/V sync apart from YouTube viewer latency
Audio/video sync is the relative timing of picture and sound. Viewer latency is how far playback trails the live event. YouTube explains that lower latency means less read-ahead buffer, so viewers may notice encoder or player issues more readily; congestion and other conditions can also delay playback even when average network capacity seems adequate. Check stream health and compare controlled samples before changing timestamp handling to address a delay that may actually be buffering.
YouTube says most viewers on low-latency streams experience latency under 10 seconds and most on ultra-low-latency streams under 5 seconds; ultra-low latency carries increased buffering risk. These are service-level latency descriptions, not A/V sync tolerances or guarantees for every viewer. See YouTube’s latency guidance.
What EC2 does—and does not—tell you
Cloud-hosted FFmpeg contribution workflows are an established pattern: AWS documents FFmpeg as an RTMP contribution encoder in a MediaLive/MediaPackage workflow, and AWS IVS publishes an FFmpeg streaming example. Neither source prescribes a fix for EC2-to-YouTube synchronization. Do not infer a specific clock, CPU, network, instance, or platform fault from those examples. See the AWS Media Services workflow and AWS IVS setup guide.
Troubleshoot by symptom
- Audio is late by a stable amount: measure the offset at more than one point, confirm which stream leads, and inspect input start times and timestamps. Consider
-itsoffsetonly if the error is fixed and the input to adjust is known. - Audio drift grows during the stream: do not try to solve it with a one-time offset. Compare timestamp continuity and source clock/rate behavior, particularly if audio and video are separate inputs; inspect frame-rate handling and whether frames are dropped or duplicated.
- The local encoded sample is already out of sync: focus on input timing, mapping, and FFmpeg’s timestamp/frame-rate handling before investigating YouTube playback.
- The local output looks right but YouTube playback does not: compare corresponding samples and viewers, inspect YouTube stream health, and distinguish relative A/V mismatch from playback latency or buffering.
- RTMPS connection errors or timeouts accompany the stream problem: verify the RTMPS scheme, ingest endpoint and path, port 443, hostname/SNI, and TLS setup. A connection failure check will not itself correct A/V timestamps.
- The output has unexpected repeated or missing frames: review the per-stream
-fps_modechoice and source timestamps; avoid changing modes without checking how the output timing changes.
Or let it run in the cloud
For uploaded, pre-recorded videos that you want to keep live on YouTube, StreamNeo is a separate cloud-looping option—not a repair for a real-time EC2/FFmpeg capture pipeline. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; nothing has to stay on at home, and it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
