Estimate MediaPackage’s live cost as ingest volume × your Region’s ingest rate + origin/packaging volume × your Region’s origin rate. Ingest is driven by the total bitrate and number of inputs; origin and packaging are driven by viewer traffic that misses the CDN cache. Encoding, CDN delivery and applicable data transfer are separate costs, so a MediaPackage estimate is not an all-in YouTube streaming bill.
AWS’s published 24/7 linear-channel example totals $1.3505 per hour for MediaPackage ingest and origin/packaging in US East (N. Virginia), using the example’s workload and rates. It is not a general quote or a guaranteed current price. Recalculate with your actual design, current regional rates and AWS Pricing Calculator.
What you need before estimating
Gather the inputs below for the specific AWS Region and MediaPackage workflow you plan to use. For a 24/7 channel, use average concurrent viewers over the full day rather than a peak audience alone.
- Region and workflow: identify the AWS Region and MediaPackage version or workflow.
- Inputs: count the incoming streams and add the bitrates in each stream’s ladder. If you send redundant streams, include each one in ingest volume.
- Active hours: model the actual billing period. A continuous channel runs 24 × 7 hours per week, but months do not all have the same number of hours; state the hours used.
- Audience: estimate average concurrent viewers and the average bitrate they actually watch.
- CDN behavior: estimate the cache-hit ratio, or the fraction of viewer volume that reaches MediaPackage as a cache miss.
- Architecture: note whether delivery uses CloudFront or another CDN, and identify encoding, transfer and other AWS services in the path.
AWS prices live ingest and origin/packaging by gigabyte. Its pricing-page example uses 1024 in the bitrate-to-volume conversion; keep the same conversion convention throughout your worksheet rather than mixing decimal and binary units. The rates shown in that example are inputs for that example, not substitutes for checking current regional prices. AWS Elemental MediaPackage pricing

Calculate MediaPackage ingest
Convert the total incoming bitrate to GB per hour, multiply by the number of incoming streams, then multiply by active hours and the current regional ingest price per GB.
- Ingest GB per hour = total input bitrate converted to GB/h × number of input streams.
- Ingest cost = ingest GB/h × active hours × current regional ingest price per GB.
In AWS’s pricing-page example, one 9.5 Mbps input stream is converted to 4.175 GB per hour. Two redundant inputs therefore use 8.35 GB/h. With the example’s US East (N. Virginia) ingest rate of $0.030/GB, the illustrated ingest subtotal is 4.175 × 2 × $0.030 = $0.2505 per hour. This is an AWS-published example, not a current guaranteed rate or a quote for another Region or input ladder. AWS Elemental MediaPackage pricing

Calculate origin and packaging
First estimate the audience’s total watched video volume; then apply the share that is not served from the CDN cache. Multiply the resulting MediaPackage origin volume by the current regional origin/packaging price.
- Viewer GB = average watched bitrate × average concurrent viewers × hours, converted to GB.
- MediaPackage origin GB = viewer GB × (1 − CDN cache-hit ratio).
- Origin/packaging cost = MediaPackage origin GB × current regional origin/packaging price per GB.
AWS’s example assumes 1,000 average viewers watching at 2 Mbps. Using its stated conversion, that is 878.91 GB/h of viewer traffic. At an assumed 97.5% CDN cache-hit ratio, 2.5% reaches MediaPackage: 878.91 × 0.025 = 21.97 GB/h. At the example’s $0.050/GB origin/packaging rate, the result is about $1.10 per hour. These audience, cache and price assumptions belong to AWS’s example, not a typical or guaranteed channel result. AWS Elemental MediaPackage pricing

Worked example: what the published hourly total includes
For the assumptions above, AWS adds the two MediaPackage components: $0.2505/h ingest + $1.10/h origin and packaging = $1.3505 per hour. That is an illustrative US East (N. Virginia) MediaPackage subtotal for AWS’s stated two-input, audience and cache assumptions. It is not the complete cost of operating a YouTube stream, an independent measurement, or a guaranteed current rate. Rebuild the estimate with your inputs and current rates in the AWS Pricing Calculator. AWS Elemental MediaPackage pricing

AWS’s live-streaming deployment example separates MediaLive encoding, MediaPackage ingest, MediaPackage packaging/origination and CloudFront distribution. - Encoding: include the encoder or encoding service used to create the output ladder.
- CDN delivery: account for delivery by CloudFront or another CDN; cache hits can reduce the volume MediaPackage originates, but CDN delivery is still a separate architecture cost.
- Data transfer: AWS says transfer charges can apply when output goes over the internet or through a CDN other than CloudFront. Check how the actual path is billed.
- Other services: add storage or any other services used by the implementation where applicable.
AWS recommends a CDN such as CloudFront because cache hits reduce the volume originated and packaged by MediaPackage. Do not compare a MediaPackage-only subtotal with another option’s all-in delivery total; compare both under the same audience, quality, Region and cache assumptions. Do not assume that MediaPackage is itself the encoder or that a MediaPackage design automatically publishes to YouTube. YouTube’s guidance describes configuring an encoder with a YouTube stream URL and key for RTMP(S). YouTube also supports HLS ingest with specific segment, playlist and HTTPS requirements. The cited AWS and YouTube guidance does not establish a direct MediaPackage-to-YouTube publishing path, so verify the protocol conversion and publishing component for the architecture before assigning its costs. HLS can have higher latency than RTMP because it sends video in segments. YouTube encoder settings and stream key guidance YouTube HLS ingest requirements
