FFmpeg stopping after a few hours on a Contabo VPS does not, by itself, show that Contabo caused the failure. First establish which layer stopped: FFmpeg may have exited, its input may have ended or disconnected, the process may still be running while output delivery is stalled, or VPS/network conditions may have disrupted the connection. Check the process state and preserve the logs and server metrics before restarting.
First identify what stopped
Record the exact failure time and inspect the FFmpeg process before changing the command or rebooting. Save the command you actually ran, the installed FFmpeg version, complete log lines around the stop, the input and output protocols, and available VPS metrics. FFmpeg options are order-sensitive: an input option generally belongs before its corresponding -i, while output options belong with the output they affect. Consult the FFmpeg command-line documentation when checking placement.
- FFmpeg exited: Capture its exit status and final log lines. A supervisor can restart an exited process, but the exit reason still needs diagnosis.
- Input ended or disconnected: Determine whether the source reached EOF, lost its connection, or stopped producing packets. An input-side reconnect option will not repair a failed publishing connection.
- FFmpeg is alive, but output failed or stalled: Check whether input packets are still arriving and whether output writes continue. A running process is not proof that viewers are receiving a stream.
- VPS or network disruption: Compare the failure timestamp with resource use, network activity, firewall and interface configuration, and provider status.
There is no established failure rate or special multi-hour timer that makes a particular cause likely. Runtime alone is not enough to identify the failing layer.
Choose recovery for the failed direction
When the input connection fails
FFmpeg documents input-side options including reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_on_http_error, reconnect_streamed, and retry or delay controls. Their behavior depends on the input protocol and installed build; check the protocol-specific documentation and your version before using them.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
reconnect_at_eof treats EOF as an error and attempts reconnection. That may suit an endless or live input, but is wrong when reaching the end of a file is supposed to finish the job. Decide whether restarting from the beginning is acceptable or whether you need position continuity. Do not add reconnect flags blindly or assume an input reconnect restores output publishing.
When publishing output fails
Output recovery is a separate problem. FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer has settings such as attempt_recovery and recovery_wait_time for supported failure scenarios. Verify the exact output format, muxer, protocol, and FFmpeg version before relying on them. These settings do not guarantee recovery from every RTMP server disconnect or every build/protocol combination.

Before choosing a universal command, establish the input type, output protocol, FFmpeg version, log error, and whether the process exited or stayed alive. Those details determine whether the appropriate response is input reconnection, output recovery, or process supervision.
Use a service supervisor for unexpected exits
Run FFmpeg under a service manager with persistent logs and a deliberate restart policy. This can start a new process after an unexpected exit; it cannot repair an invalid stream key, an ended source, a persistent network outage, or a live process whose output is stalled. Decide whether a restart from the beginning is acceptable and avoid an uncontrolled rapid-restart loop when the underlying fault persists.

For a background process, FFmpeg’s FAQ documents -nostdin to disable console input checks. Keep the command and logs available to the service manager so that a restart does not erase the evidence needed to diagnose the original exit.
Check the Contabo VPS and network
At the failure time, review CPU, RAM and swap, disk, network use, firewall rules, interface configuration, and provider status. Contabo Support identifies resource exhaustion as a possible contributor to network timeouts and points to firewall or network configuration as possible causes. Compare the metrics with the stop timestamp and provide those diagnostics to Contabo if you suspect a host-node or routing problem.

Contabo’s bandwidth guidance says there is no default bandwidth limit on VPS, VDS, and dedicated servers, while fair-use measures may apply to exceptionally high or disruptive traffic. It lists port speeds from 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps for VPS/VDS. Those are provider-level policy and product statements, not a measurement of your server’s throughput or evidence that your specific stream was throttled. Check actual traffic and account/server status before drawing that conclusion.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Preserve evidence before rebooting
A reboot may restore service, but it does not identify or fix the underlying cause. Save logs, process state, timestamps, and resource/network metrics first if possible; rebooting can erase transient evidence. Contabo Support advises: “If you still have access to the operating system on the server, please consider rebooting from the operating system instead.” If the operating system is inaccessible, Contabo’s server reboot guidance explains the control-panel reboot, which shuts down and restarts the server.

Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you observe | What to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg process is gone | Exit status and complete final log lines | Diagnose the logged error; use a supervised restart as a fallback for an unexpected exit. |
| Input packets stop or the input reaches EOF | Input protocol, source availability, and whether EOF should end the job | Use only protocol-supported input reconnect options when reconnection is appropriate. |
| Process remains alive but output delivery stops | Output logs, write activity, output protocol, muxer, and FFmpeg version | Investigate output-side recovery support; input reconnect flags do not solve this case. |
| Timeouts coincide with VPS or network anomalies | CPU, RAM/swap, bandwidth use, firewall, interface, routing, and provider status | Preserve timestamped diagnostics and escalate suspected host or routing issues to Contabo. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your stream is a pre-recorded video or playlist for YouTube, StreamNeo is an alternative to maintaining FFmpeg on your VPS: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded content from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it accepts the upload as made up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. It plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube only; it is not a camera-based live setup. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
