How to Build a Website and Online Store for Your Creator Brand

A practical guide to planning a creator website and store, choosing a platform, setting up products and payments, and preparing for launch.

Build your creator website around what you want visitors to do—follow your work, book you, join a membership, or buy something. Decide what you’ll offer before choosing a platform: a shop for physical products has different needs from a portfolio with downloadable files or a service-booking page. Then build the site, configure delivery and payments, and test the full customer journey before launch.

What is an online store?

An online store is more than a grid of products. A working store connects product or service pages to a cart and checkout, payment handling, order management, and—when you sell physical items—shipping and fulfillment. Depending on what you sell, it may also need inventory tracking, digital delivery, appointments, subscriptions, memberships, or print-on-demand support.

Your website can combine a store with the rest of your creator brand: an introduction, portfolio or body of work, contact details, and links to the places where your audience follows you. The main action should be obvious on each important page: follow, subscribe, book, or buy.

Decide what your creator brand will offer

Write down the first offer you want the site to support, then note how customers will receive it. Your platform choice and setup depend on that delivery path.

Offer Operational needs to check
Physical products Product variants, inventory, shipping rates, order management, and a plan for packing and fulfillment.
Digital downloads File delivery, clear product descriptions, and any platform fees that apply to digital products.
Services Service details, inquiry or booking flow, payment options, and how customers will receive confirmation or next steps.
Courses or memberships How access is granted and managed, and whether the platform supports the format and recurring relationship you intend to offer.
Subscriptions or print-on-demand Recurring billing or fulfillment integrations, plus the costs and operating steps attached to those services.
A mix of offers Whether one platform can handle the different product, delivery, and order workflows without making maintenance impractical.

Be specific about what you need at launch versus what might be useful later. A feature that sounds attractive but does not serve your current offer can add cost or complexity without helping visitors complete the action you want.

Choose a platform by operating needs, not a universal “best”

Start with must-haves: the kind of pages and portfolio you need, the products you sell, available payment methods in your market, fulfillment requirements, integrations, design flexibility, and how much ongoing maintenance you are prepared to handle. The comparisons below describe what each vendor’s cited material establishes; they are not independent product tests or a universal ranking.

Platform What its cited vendor material describes Questions to answer before choosing
Shopify Shopify’s 2026 vendor-authored guide describes a hosted store builder with themes, hosting, payments, order tools, and integrations, for businesses ranging from solo merchants to larger enterprises. Is ecommerce the main job of the site? Which selling channels, integrations, and store workflows do you actually need? What are the current plan and payment-processing costs in your country?
Wix Wix describes a website builder with product pages, cart, checkout, inventory, payments, shipping, and support for multiple selling models. Wix says its free environment can be used to build and experiment, but accepting payments requires a paid Premium plan; availability and terms may change. Does an integrated visual site-and-store approach suit your brand? Which capabilities require a paid plan, and can it support your product and delivery model?
Squarespace Squarespace describes templates and mobile layouts alongside inventory, shipping, order management, payments, tax features, and marketing guidance. Its help material distinguishes payment-processing rates from platform transaction fees; the fee structure varies by plan, product type, country, and rollout. Does its combination of site and store functions fit your needs? Which fee schedule and payment options currently apply to your account, country, and product mix?
WooCommerce WooCommerce describes its core as free, open-source ecommerce software for WordPress, with no platform fee or revenue share. The store owner chooses hosting, payment processing, and any added features. Is WordPress flexibility worth assembling and maintaining the hosting, payment, and extension stack? Which parts will have their own costs?

Shopify’s comparison is published by Shopify itself, so treat its ratings, feature descriptions, and starting prices as vendor-published information dated 2026—not independent evaluation or a permanent quotation. For any platform, confirm current features and costs directly before committing.

How can I start an online store?

  1. Define your audience and main action. Describe whom the site serves, what your brand offers them, and whether the primary next step is to follow, subscribe, book, or buy.
  2. Choose the offer and delivery path. Decide whether you are selling a physical product, download, service, membership, course, subscription, or combination. Identify how a customer will receive it and what you must do after an order arrives.
  3. List platform requirements and estimate total cost. Include site and portfolio needs, product tools, payment support in your market, fulfillment, integrations, and expected maintenance. Compare the whole operating setup, not just the advertised base plan.
  4. Build a clear site structure. Create the pages your audience needs: home, about, work or portfolio, offer or product pages, contact, and any relevant support or policy pages. Keep brand visuals consistent and descriptions accurate.
  5. Set up products or services. Add accurate names, descriptions, prices, variants or service details, and inventory where relevant. Explain delivery, booking, or fulfillment clearly before the customer reaches checkout.
  6. Configure payments and fulfillment. Connect a payment processor available in your market. Set up shipping and order handling for physical goods, or the appropriate delivery and access process for digital products and services.
  7. Run through the customer journey before publishing. Follow the path from offer page through checkout to the order or delivery steps. Check that the information shown is clear and that you understand what happens when an order is placed. This is a recommended pre-launch check, not a claim that a particular platform has been tested here.
  8. Review the mobile experience and customer information. Inspect key pages on a phone, check that product details and contact or support information are easy to find, and make sure your customer-facing policies reflect how you actually operate.
  9. Publish, promote, and refine. Use channels appropriate to your audience, such as search, a blog, social media, or email. Review how people use the site and make changes based on what you observe; no particular sales or conversion result is guaranteed.

Squarespace’s official store FAQ describes a similar sequence: choose a niche and products, select a platform, customize the design, add product listings, and integrate payment gateways. That is the vendor’s organizational guidance, not an independent endorsement.

Plan for the full cost, not just the platform plan

For each candidate, check the subscription or hosting cost, payment-processing charges, platform transaction fees, paid apps or extensions, domain costs, and fulfillment expenses that apply to your setup. Payment processing and platform transaction fees are separate charges, and the amounts can depend on plan, product type, payment method, country, and account availability.

Squarespace’s Help Center, accessed in 2026, lists current-plan commerce transaction fees as Business 3%, Commerce Basic 0%, and Commerce Advanced 0%. For plans it says are rolling out in waves, it lists Basic 2%, Core 0%, Plus 0%, and Advanced 0%. For digital products in that rollout, it lists Basic 7%, Core 5%, Plus 1%, and Advanced 0%. These are platform transaction fees for the stated plans and product categories—not universal payment-processing rates. The same help material says structures vary by country and rollout, and separate payment-processing charges apply. Check the live fee information for your own plan and region before pricing products.

WooCommerce’s statement that its core software is free does not make the entire store free to operate: the owner chooses hosting and payment solutions, which may charge, and may also choose paid extensions or services. For a hosted builder, verify which features are included at the plan you would actually use.

Make the site clear and dependable for customers

  • Use accurate descriptions. State what is included, what the customer receives, and any relevant format, size, variant, or service details.
  • Explain the next step. Customers should know whether an order will ship, a download will be delivered, a booking needs confirmation, or membership access will follow.
  • Plan customer support. Provide a usable contact or support route and decide how you will handle order questions.
  • Review policies for your situation. Shipping, returns, privacy, tax, consumer protection, and accessibility requirements depend on your jurisdiction and business. Check rules that apply to your market; this guide is not legal or tax advice.
  • Keep the site maintainable. Choose a setup you can keep current, including product details, stock or availability, links, and customer-facing information.

If your creator brand includes a 24/7 YouTube channel

A website and online store handle your brand pages and sales; they do not themselves keep a YouTube channel live. If you also publish pre-recorded video as a continuous YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service from Yorker Media for looping uploaded videos on YouTube. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; the stream runs in the cloud, so your computer does not have to stay on. It is for uploaded videos, not camera-based live production, and it does not replace a website or store.
