There is no verified Xbox-specific fix that solves every case of Genshin Impact multiplayer lag. The fastest way to find the right fix is to identify whether you are seeing online delay (teleporting characters, late actions, fluctuating ping), local frame-rate stutter, a host/participant connection problem, or a Genshin/Xbox service incident. Check service status first, then fully quit the game, restart the console and router, pause competing traffic, and compare Wi‑Fi with Ethernet before changing advanced router settings.

Try these fixes first

  1. Check both service-status pages. Look at Genshin Impact Status and Xbox Support. A green status does not rule out a regional ISP-routing problem, but it can prevent you from changing local settings during a known incident.
  2. Quit Genshin completely. Press the Xbox button, highlight Genshin Impact, press Menu, choose Quit, then relaunch. This removes a suspended Quick Resume session as a variable; it does not prove Quick Resume causes lag.
  3. Restart the Xbox and network equipment. Restart the console from its power menu. If the problem remains, restart the router and modem, reconnecting the modem first and the router second, then wait for the internet connection to return before testing co-op again. HoYoverse recommends restarting network devices and reducing congestion for disconnection problems (HoYoverse guidance).
  4. Pause competing traffic. Stop 4K streaming, downloads, cloud backups, video calls, uploads, and other game installations. Bandwidth is not the same as latency: a fast plan can still suffer from Wi‑Fi interference, packet loss, bufferbloat, or a poor route to the game service.
  5. Test Ethernet. Connect the Xbox directly to the router and repeat the same co-op activity. If wired play is stable, Wi‑Fi coverage, interference, or congestion is the likely local cause. If wired play is unchanged, investigate the ISP route, Xbox services, Genshin, or the installation instead. HoYoverse recommends a wired or alternate-network test (connection-error guidance).
  6. Disable VPNs and proxies. Temporarily bypass VPNs, custom DNS filters, parental-control DNS, ad-blocking network appliances, and router “gaming accelerator” features. HoYoverse specifically recommends disabling VPNs or proxies while troubleshooting connection errors.
  7. Change the co-op host. Have the other player host the same activity. If the delay follows one host, that player’s connection or route is more suspect. This is an isolation test, not a guaranteed fix.

First determine what “lag” means

In multiplayer, latency is the time for data to travel between your console and the game service; packet loss means updates fail to arrive. Rubber-banding, teleporting characters, delayed attacks, unresponsive domains, and disconnects point toward networking or service conditions. Frame-rate stutter is different: the image hitches, camera movement is uneven, or the game feels jerky even while exploring alone. Loading or asset-streaming pauses can also look like lag.

Symptom More likely category Best first comparison
Characters teleport or actions arrive late Network path or service Status page, Ethernet, another host, Xbox statistics
Image freezes briefly while audio continues Local performance or asset streaming Quit/restart, resource check, graphics settings
Ping spikes when other devices are active Home-network congestion Pause traffic, use Ethernet, review router traffic controls
Only one friend or host causes the problem Participant or host route Switch host and compare
Everyone is affected at once Service or regional route Check official status and recent updates

Test the same activity in solo exploration, co-op open world, and a co-op domain or combat encounter. If solo and co-op are both affected, prioritize performance and installation checks. If only co-op is affected, prioritize network, host, and service tests.

Use Xbox network tests without overinterpreting them

On current Xbox software, open Settings → General → Network settings. Labels can vary by system update or region. Run:

High latency makes actions feel delayed; packet loss is more associated with rubber-banding and disconnections. NAT can affect joining or hosting sessions, but it is not a universal explanation for high in-game ping when co-op already works. A normal Xbox test also cannot prove that your ISP route to Genshin is healthy. Use Xbox network settings, party-chat and multiplayer troubleshooting, and the network-ports reference for official networking guidance.

Do not begin with arbitrary port forwarding, DMZ mode, or disabling your firewall. If Xbox reports strict NAT or double NAT and sessions cannot be joined, use Microsoft’s double-NAT guidance rather than copying risky router settings.

Fix visual stutter and local game problems

Install available Genshin and Xbox updates. If the problem occurs in solo play, began after an interrupted update, or includes crashes, missing textures, or incorrect world assets, use Genshin’s resource-integrity option where available: the wrench icon on the login screen or Paimon Menu → Settings → Resources → Check Resource Integrity. HoYoverse documents these steps and graphics troubleshooting in its lagging, freezing, and crashing guidance; the exact Xbox wording can change.

For frame-rate hitching, open Paimon Menu → Settings → Graphics and reduce graphics quality, shadow quality, or special effects, then retest. Graphics settings can improve frame pacing but cannot repair packet loss, ping spikes, or a bad server route. Reinstalling is a later option for suspected corrupted local data, not a first response to network-only delay.

Advanced comparisons after the basic tests

Compare Wi‑Fi bands and locations

At short range, 5 GHz Wi‑Fi is often faster but loses strength through walls; 2.4 GHz travels farther but is more vulnerable to congestion. Mesh Wi‑Fi can improve coverage while adding wireless hops or roaming behavior. Ethernet remains the cleanest diagnostic baseline.

Try another network temporarily

A mobile hotspot or alternate connection can show whether the home ISP is involved. Treat it as a comparison, not a permanent gaming recommendation: carrier congestion, data limits, and variable latency may make it worse.

Consider ISP congestion

If packet loss or poor evening performance affects several games and devices, contact the ISP with repeated wired-test results. A faster download tier alone does not guarantee lower latency or a better route to Genshin.

DNS and VPN expectations

Changing DNS may help a name-resolution or connection-setup problem, but it is not a reliable way to lower in-game ping after the session is established. A VPN can occasionally provide a better route, but it can also add latency; because HoYoverse recommends disabling VPNs and proxies during connection-error troubleshooting, use one only as a temporary, controlled comparison.

When the problem probably is not the Xbox

A service-side or routing issue becomes more plausible when multiple unrelated players report the same behavior, every other game works normally, the problem began immediately after a Genshin update, Ethernet makes no difference, the delay appears at a predictable time or in one region, or Xbox statistics look normal while Genshin remains delayed. These are indicators rather than proof. Attribute a confirmed outage only to an official status notice or announcement.

Series X and Series S differences do not establish that Series S causes multiplayer lag. Rendering performance can differ, but online latency is primarily a connection or service issue; separate visual hitching from delayed network responses.

What to send HoYoverse support

If the issue persists, collect evidence before opening a ticket:

  • Game UID
  • Xbox model (Series X or Series S) and system software version
  • your region, Genshin server, ISP, and network type
  • exact dates and times of failures
  • whether you were hosting or joining and whether solo play was affected
  • Xbox latency, packet-loss, NAT, and multiplayer-test results
  • wired-versus-Wi‑Fi results and whether another network changed the behavior
  • a screenshot or video showing the symptom

HoYoverse’s support requirements and technical-issue categories are listed in its Technical Issues section and its disconnection guidance.

What is worth buying?

  • Ethernet cable: A standard Cat 5e or Cat 6 cable is the most useful low-cost test; premium “gaming” cables do not have an established ping advantage. See Amazon Ethernet cables or a local retailer.
  • New router or mesh system: Consider one only when wired testing shows Wi‑Fi is the bottleneck. Options include eero, Google Nest Wifi, and NETGEAR; none can fix a Genshin outage or ISP routing problem.
  • VPN, DNS service, or “lag reducer”: Do not buy one as a guaranteed solution. Such tools can complicate diagnosis or add latency.

Xbox states that ordinary locally installed Genshin co-op on Series X|S does not require Game Pass Core or Ultimate. Game Pass Ultimate is relevant to Xbox Cloud Gaming and related benefits, not a prerequisite for console co-op (Xbox Wire announcement).
