Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThis guide documents the parts, recommendations, prices, and build process appropriate to 2024. Hardware prices, availability, BIOS versions, drivers, and recommended parts have changed since then, so treat the examples as a dated reference rather than 2026 buying advice.
Building a gaming PC has four phases: define the games and performance target, choose compatible parts, assemble and test the hardware, then install and configure Windows. A complete tower requires a CPU, cooler, motherboard, memory, graphics card, storage, power supply, and case; the complete setup also needs a monitor, keyboard, mouse, operating system, and network connection.
1. Define the gaming target before buying
Write down the games you intend to play and the display you will use. Resolution and refresh rate determine whether your money should favor the graphics card, processor, or monitor.
- Resolution: 1080p, 1440p, or 4K
- Refresh target: 60, 120, 144, 165, or 240 Hz
- Whether ray tracing, DLSS, FSR, or frame generation matters
- Streaming, video editing, mods, virtual machines, or heavy multitasking
- Need for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB-C, or multiple monitors
Average FPS is not the whole experience: 1% lows describe occasional dips, while the monitor refresh rate determines how many frames can be displayed. CPU-limited games benefit from a faster processor; at 4K, the GPU is more often the limiting component. No part guarantees a frame rate across every game and setting.

Useful 2024 planning targets
- 1080p: a midrange CPU and GPU; 16 GB was workable, while 32 GB was a better long-term choice.
- 1440p: a 6- to 8-core CPU, 32 GB DDR5, and a stronger midrange GPU.
- 4K: prioritize GPU performance and VRAM; extra CPU spending matters less once the GPU is saturated.
These are planning guidelines. Results vary with game, graphics preset, ray tracing, upscaling, cooling, and driver version.
2. Set the complete budget
Decide whether your number covers only the tower, the tower plus Windows, or a complete setup. Include tax, shipping, and possible replacement cables.
- CPU and cooler
- Motherboard and memory
- Graphics card, SSD, power supply, and case
- Windows license and USB installation drive
- Monitor, keyboard, mouse, and Wi-Fi adapter if needed
- Extra case fans and tools
In late-2024 US coverage, TechSpot placed the GeForce RTX 4070 Super around $590–$600 and described the Radeon RX 7800 XT as a lower-cost alternative for buyers less concerned with ray tracing and NVIDIA-specific features. Those are historical street-price signals, not current prices: TechSpot’s second-half 2024 guide.
3. Choose the components
| Part | What it controls | Compatibility checks | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| CPU | Game logic and frame-rate ceiling | Socket, BIOS, cooler, power | Overspending on CPU while using a weak GPU |
| Graphics card | Resolution and visual performance | Length, thickness, VRAM, connectors, PSU | Comparing model numbers instead of tested settings |
| Motherboard | Connectivity and upgrade options | Socket, chipset, RAM generation, slots, headers | Paying for unused features |
| Memory | Capacity and responsiveness | DDR generation, slots, QVL | Mixing kits |
| SSD | Load times and capacity | M.2 slot, interface, lane sharing | Buying too little space |
| Power supply | Stable power delivery | Wattage, quality, ATX version, connectors | Choosing by wattage alone |
| Case | Fit, airflow, noise, expansion | Dimensions, GPU and cooler clearance, radiator support | Ignoring airflow and cable space |
| Cooler | CPU temperature and noise | Socket bracket, height or radiator support | Forgetting mounting hardware |
CPU
Match the processor to the target frame rate and game type, not simply the highest model. Check socket, core count, power consumption, cooling requirement, upgrade path, and whether it includes integrated graphics. Intel “F” processors generally lack integrated graphics, removing a useful troubleshooting display output. In 2024, AMD’s AM5 platform offered an upgrade path and Ryzen X3D chips were strong gaming options; Intel offered broad board choice and DDR4 options but LGA1700 was nearing the end of its cycle. TechSpot changed its 2024 recommendation regarding Intel 13th- and 14th-generation desktop CPUs in response to reported stability issues; that is a dated recommendation change, not evidence that every chip failed: source.
CPU cooler
A correctly mounted tower air cooler is simpler and has fewer failure points than a liquid AIO. Check cooler height, socket hardware, thermal paste, RAM clearance, and case radiator support. An AIO can suit a high-power CPU or a particular case layout, but adds a pump, radiator, tubing, and another possible failure point.
Motherboard
Verify CPU socket and chipset, BIOS support, DDR4 or DDR5 support, RAM slots, M.2 slots, PCIe layout, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth, rear USB, fan headers, front USB-C header, form factor, BIOS flashback, and power-delivery quality. Microsoft lists these as key selection factors: motherboard guidance.
Memory
Sixteen gigabytes was a practical 2024 minimum, 32 GB the preferred default, and 64 GB useful for heavy modding, creation work, virtual machines, or unusually demanding multitasking. Use a matched two-module kit in the board’s recommended slots. DDR4 and DDR5 are not interchangeable. Advertised DDR5-6000 or similar settings may initially run at a lower JEDEC speed; enable XMP on Intel or EXPO on AMD only after confirming baseline stability. Intel warns against mixing kits and notes that high-speed memory requires profile configuration: Intel’s build guide.

Graphics card
Compare raster performance, ray tracing, VRAM, upscaling and frame-generation support, encoding, noise, dimensions, outputs, and power connectors at your chosen resolution. NVIDIA’s 2024 RTX 4070 family comprised the RTX 4070, 4070 Super, 4070 Ti, and 4070 Ti Super, with DLSS 3 listed as a platform feature: NVIDIA. Check the exact card’s power requirement rather than relying on the family name.
Recommended Free Tools
Storage
Use at least a 1 TB SSD; 2 TB is more comfortable for large libraries. An NVMe M.2 drive is a practical primary disk. M.2 describes a form factor, not a speed; NVMe and SATA are different interfaces. Some M.2 slots share lanes with SATA ports or PCIe slots. DirectStorage-compatible games require NVMe storage, a DirectX 12 GPU, and appropriate driver support: Microsoft requirements.
Power supply
Choose a reputable unit with suitable wattage, protections, efficiency, warranty, ATX version, and transient headroom. A quality 750 W supply can be preferable to a poor 1,000 W model. For modern NVIDIA cards, distinguish traditional 6-/8-pin cables, native 12VHPWR or 12V-2×6 cables, and adapters; follow the GPU and PSU manufacturers’ cable instructions. NVIDIA says to check requirements for the specific card: reference. Never reuse modular cables from another PSU unless the manufacturer confirms compatibility.
Case
Check motherboard form factor, GPU maximum length and thickness, cooler height, radiator support, intake and exhaust positions, dust filters, cable-routing space, front I/O, PSU support, drive bays, and vertical-GPU requirements. A mesh-front case with usable intake and exhaust positions is generally easier to cool than a sealed-glass design.
4. Check compatibility before purchasing
Build the complete list first. PCPartPicker is useful for preliminary compatibility and pricing, but manuals remain authoritative.

- Enable XMP, EXPO, or the board’s equivalent only after default settings are stable, then test again.
BIOS labels and paths vary by manufacturer and firmware version, so use the exact motherboard manual.
8. Install Windows 11
Create installation media using Microsoft’s official process and install to the intended SSD. Windows 11 minimums include a compatible 64-bit, two-core processor, 4 GB RAM, 64 GB storage, DirectX 12 graphics, UEFI/Secure Boot capability, and TPM 2.0. These are installation baselines, not sensible gaming specifications: Microsoft requirements.
Microsoft’s current requirements state that Windows 11 Home and Pro for personal use require internet connectivity and a Microsoft account during initial setup, subject to edition and setup context: Microsoft’s Windows 11 page. A product key, digital license, retail license, and OEM license have different transfer and support terms. Windows Home is generally enough for gaming; choose Pro for a specific administrative, virtualization, or policy feature.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.9. Install drivers and configure the system
- Run Windows Update.
- Install motherboard chipset drivers, then network and audio drivers if needed.
- Install the current graphics driver from NVIDIA or AMD.
- Update BIOS only when compatibility or a documented fix justifies it, following the board’s procedure.
- Install launchers, monitoring tools, peripheral software, and backup tools.
Avoid generic driver-updater utilities. Configure the monitor’s advertised refresh rate in Windows, appropriate fan curves, Secure Boot and TPM/fTPM where required, Resizable BAR or Smart Access Memory where supported, and per-game graphics settings rather than blindly selecting maximum presets.
10. Test the finished PC
Basic checks
- All RAM capacity and the full SSD capacity are visible.
- GPU, fans, Ethernet or Wi-Fi, audio, and USB devices work.
- The monitor is operating at its intended refresh rate.
Stability checks
Run separate CPU, GPU, and memory tests, then play a demanding game for an extended period while observing temperatures, clocks, fan speeds, and power behavior. There is no universal safe temperature: use the exact CPU and GPU specifications, ambient temperature, cooler, BIOS behavior, and manufacturer limits.
Before aggressive memory settings or overclocking, save a stable BIOS profile, record defaults, create a Windows restore point, and locate the motherboard’s CMOS-clear procedure.

RGB or front USB fails
Check orientation and connector type. Never connect 5 V addressable RGB to a 12 V RGB header. Verify the USB 3.x or internal USB-C header and any proprietary hub requirements.
12. Applying this 2024 checklist today
Use the process, compatibility checks, assembly order, and diagnostic method as durable guidance. Rebuild the parts list for the current market: compare newer CPU and GPU generations, current prices, firmware, connector standards, warranties, and local availability instead of assuming a 2024 recommendation remains good value in 2026. A custom builder such as Micro Center’s service can provide assembly and support where available, while a prebuilt trades component control for convenience. Inspect the exact PSU, motherboard, cooling, and upgrade limitations in either case.
