There is no single Steam Deck fix for Honkai: Star Rail crashing. The correct solution depends on whether you installed HoYoPlay, added StarRail.exe to Steam, or use Honkers Railway, Twintail, Lutris, or another launcher—and on whether the crash happens at startup, during rendering, or when an animated story asset loads.
Use the decision tree below. Start with reversible steps, change one variable at a time, and do not reinstall the entire game until resource verification, runner testing, and launcher checks have failed.
Identify the installation and the exact crash point
First write down the launcher and executable you are actually using:
- HoYoPlay added to Steam as a non-Steam game
StarRail.exeadded directly to Steam- Honkers Railway, which documents a Steam Deck Flatpak installation route (installation instructions)
- Twintail, another third-party launcher that lists Honkai: Star Rail among its supported games (project repository)
- Lutris, a mod manager, or another Wine-based setup
- Windows installed separately on the Deck
Steam’s Compatibility setting controls a Steam-added program. It does not necessarily control the runner selected inside Honkers Railway, Twintail, Lutris, or another launcher.

Safe checks for every setup
- Open Settings → System, install available SteamOS updates, and restart the Deck completely.
- In Desktop Mode, update the launcher or third-party tool if it has its own updater.
- Temporarily remove Proton environment variables,
-force-wayland, DXVK/VKD3D overrides, mod loaders, MangoHud, FPS counters, recording software, Decky overlays, Discord overlays, and custom resolution or controller arguments. - Check free space on the drive containing the game. If it is on a microSD card, treat storage location as a diagnostic variable rather than assuming the internal SSD is a guaranteed cure.
- For initial testing, use 1280×800 in handheld mode where supported, or 1280×720 if the game behaves better at 16:9. Select low or medium graphics, disable unnecessary post-processing and motion blur, reduce resolution scaling, and cap the frame rate if instability appears under load.
- Confirm that the shortcut launches the intended HoYoPlay or game executable, not an obsolete file left by an earlier installation.
Valve’s Deck Verified criteria use the Deck’s default resolutions, controller navigation, readable text, Proton, and related middleware as compatibility baselines; they do not certify a particular current Honkai: Star Rail setup (Valve’s criteria). A community guide also recommends staying near native Deck resolution during Proton troubleshooting (Steam Community guide).
If HoYoPlay opens: re-verify the downloaded resources
HoYoverse lists resource verification as a first response to crashes and freezes:
- Open HoYoPlay.
- Select Update.
- Choose Re-verify the integrity of the downloaded resources.
- Confirm and allow the process to finish completely.
- Launch the game again and reproduce the same failure.
This is less destructive than deleting the installation. If HoYoPlay or its Wine prefix cannot start, skip this branch and test the runner and prefix instead. HoYoverse’s published crash instructions are primarily Windows-oriented, so Windows file paths in its support article should not be copied to SteamOS (HoYoverse crash and freeze guidance).
If the game closes immediately or returns to Steam
Test the executable path
Open the shortcut’s properties and verify that the target and start-in directory still point to the current HoYoPlay or StarRail.exe. A patch, moved library, or recreated prefix can leave a non-Steam shortcut targeting a file that no longer exists.

Test runners one at a time
For a game or executable added to Steam:
- Select it in the Steam Library.
- Open the gear icon and choose Properties.
- Open Compatibility.
- Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Try Proton Experimental if it is installed, then test another maintained Proton choice.
- Launch the same mode and reproduce the same crash before changing anything else.
For Honkers Railway, Twintail, Lutris, or another launcher, select the runner inside that application. Steam’s per-shortcut choice may not affect the internal Wine prefix.
Do not assume GE-Proton is automatically best. Reports include a setup that worked with Wine-GE-Proton or Wine-Staging-TKG but failed with Proton-GE (Honkers Railway issue), while another report describes problems across several runners and custom settings (Proton-GE compatibility report). These are evidence for controlled testing, not a permanent version recommendation.
Recreate only the launcher prefix as a later step
If the launcher itself is broken, recreate its prefix or shortcut without deleting the game files first. Export or note the installation directory and account details before removing anything. A full reinstall can reproduce the same runner incompatibility and costs considerably more time.
If the crash happens during a cutscene or animated menu
A game that reaches ordinary gameplay but exits when a cutscene, voiced story segment, tutorial animation, or event page opens may be hitting a Linux media or animated-asset compatibility problem rather than damaged resources. Honkers Railway issue reports document this pattern, including black screens and Unity-related failures, across multiple runners (animated-asset crash report).

Try another maintained runner with all overlays, mods, and launch options removed. If the same asset crashes across runners, changing resolution or reinstalling may not help. Some story scenes are required for progression, so do not assume that skipping every video is safe.
The practical fallbacks are to play the official Windows build on another computer, or use Windows on the Deck if you are comfortable maintaining that installation. That is a compatibility workaround, not evidence that the Deck hardware is defective. Do not use executable patches, DLL injections, anti-cheat bypasses, or modified clients merely to get past the scene; they can create update, security, and account risks.

For a Steam-added executable, temporarily set this in Properties → General → Launch Options:
PROTON_LOG=1 %command%
- Save the option.
- Launch the game and reproduce the crash once.
- Switch to Desktop Mode and look for the generated Proton log in your home directory.
- Keep the log with the exact crash time and runner version when asking for help.
- Remove
PROTON_LOG=1 %command%after testing if you no longer need it.
Steam Deck troubleshooting discussions document this logging method and the usual home-directory location (Proton logging instructions; additional log guidance). Launchers with their own logging controls should be collected separately.

When moving storage or reinstalling is justified
Move the installation to internal storage only as a controlled diagnostic test if downloads repeatedly fail, decompression stops, the card reports filesystem errors, or performance changes clearly with storage location. The available evidence does not establish that internal storage universally fixes Honkai: Star Rail crashes.
Consider a full reinstall only after:
- resource verification completed or was unavailable because the launcher prefix is unusable;
- at least two runner choices were tested without changing other variables;
- launch options, overlays, and modifications were removed;
- the executable path and free storage were checked; and
- the failure still points specifically to damaged or incomplete files.
Reinstalling cannot correct a game-specific Proton or media incompatibility, and it may simply recreate the same failure.
When the local fix has reached its limit
If the game fails at the same animated asset across clean prefixes and several runners, there may be no dependable SteamOS-side fix until the game, launcher, or Proton/Wine stack changes. Record the game build and the date the problem began, because a later patch or runner update can alter the result.
What to send to support
For HoYoverse, include your UID, Deck model, SteamOS version, launcher name and version, Proton/Wine runner and version, storage location, exact failure point, screenshot or video, Proton and launcher logs, and the exact crash time. HoYoverse requests device details, logs, dump files, visual evidence, and timing in its crash guidance (official crash support).

Do not assume those Windows executables run correctly on SteamOS; if you test one, it must use the same Wine prefix as the affected launcher and may still be unsupported.
For Honkers Railway or Twintail failures, report to the relevant project with the launcher version, runner, prefix details, reproduction steps, and logs. HoYoverse’s Windows troubleshooting instructions and an unofficial launcher’s Linux issue tracker are separate support channels.
