Microsoft first let select Xbox Insiders test a per-game Quick Resume switch on March 18, 2026. The feature reached the general Xbox update on April 30, so it is no longer an Insider-only experiment. You can disable Quick Resume for individual games that return to stale online sessions while leaving it enabled for titles that resume reliably.

What Microsoft changed

Quick Resume keeps a suspended game state so supported titles can return almost immediately. Microsoft’s March 18, 2026 announcement introduced Quick Resume Settings, allowing the feature to be disabled for a specific game rather than turned off globally.

The original announcement covered testing by select Xbox Insiders. Microsoft later included the control in the April 30, 2026 Xbox update, making the per-game option generally available. Preview-ring, account, geographic, and dashboard-version differences can still affect when a particular console shows the setting.

Why a fresh launch can help

A suspended session can become unsuitable after a game has been inactive for hours or days. This is most relevant to games that depend on authentication, matchmaking, live services, or a persistent server connection. Microsoft described the problem as certain games not behaving as expected after prolonged inactivity, especially online-dependent titles.

#1 Best Overall
Xbox Series X | Disc Gaming Console | 1TB SSD
  • FASTEST, MOST POWERFUL XBOX — Experience next-generation performance with 12 teraflops of processing power, delivering smoother gameplay, richer worlds, and faster responsiveness than any previous XBOX.
  • TRUE 4K GAMING UP TO 120 FPS — Enjoy breathtaking visuals with true 4K resolution, HDR, and frame rates up to 120 FPS, plus hardware-accelerated ray tracing for a heightened level of realism.
  • 1TB CUSTOM SSD AND XBOX VELOCITY ARCHITECTURE — Reduce load times dramatically with the custom 1TB NVMe SSD and XBOX Velocity Architecture, enabling lightning-fast performance and seamless world streaming.
  • QUICK RESUME — Seamlessly switch between multiple games and resume exactly where you left off. No more waiting through title screens and loading bars.
  • FOUR GENERATIONS OF GAMES — Play thousands of games from XBOX Series X|S, XBOX One, XBOX 360, and Original XBOX, with many titles enhanced for better visuals and performance on XBOX Series X.
  • The game returns to a title screen instead of the expected session.
  • A connection or session-expired message appears.
  • You must reconnect to online services manually.
  • Menus or matchmaking remain stale.
  • The game behaves unpredictably after waking from suspension.

These symptoms do not prove that Quick Resume caused every crash or connection failure. A fresh launch only removes the suspended application state from this particular part of the equation.

How to disable Quick Resume for one game

From the Quick Resume group

  1. Open the Quick Resume group on your Xbox dashboard.
  2. Highlight the game.
  3. Open the tile’s More options menu.
  4. Select Manage Quick Resume.
  5. Open the Quick Resume settings and switch the setting off for that title.

This path follows Microsoft’s Insider documentation at Xbox Wire.

From any game tile

  1. Highlight the game in the Xbox interface.
  2. Open Manage game and add-ons.
  3. Select Quick Resume settings.
  4. Turn off Quick Resume for the game.

Microsoft documented this alternate route in its April 2026 update article. Dashboard wording can vary slightly between preview and public system builds.

What changes after you switch it off

The selected game should no longer be retained as a Quick Resume session. When you start it again, it should perform a normal launch instead of restoring that suspended state. You lose near-instant return for that game, but other games keep their own Quick Resume behavior because the control is selective.

Quick Resume enabled Quick Resume disabled
Returns quickly to the previous game state Performs a normal launch
Convenient for reliable offline or single-player games Better suited to games needing a fresh online session
May restore stale network state Avoids relying on that suspended session
Saves time between sessions Adds normal startup time each time you return

Quick Resume is not a save system. Disabling it does not delete local or cloud saves; continue to use the game’s normal save controls.

Which games should you configure?

Good candidates for disabling

  • Always-online multiplayer games.
  • Live-service games that frequently update their client or servers.
  • Titles that require authentication whenever they start.
  • Games that lose connectivity after the console wakes.
  • Games that repeatedly show stale menus, matchmaking errors, or reconnect prompts after suspension.
  • Titles you commonly leave suspended for long periods.

Microsoft has not published a definitive list of affected games, so make the decision from the behavior of the particular title rather than its genre alone.

Troubleshooting the setting

The option is missing

  • Check Settings → System → Updates and install any available console update.
  • Try both menu paths; the game may not currently appear in the Quick Resume group.
  • Allow for staged rollout or dashboard differences between preview and production builds.
  • Confirm that your console and system software support the Quick Resume controls; Xbox Series X|S is the primary Quick Resume platform, and Xbox One menus are not necessarily identical.

Microsoft’s public rollout context is also described in its March 2026 Xbox Insider update.

The game still seems to resume

If an instance was already suspended, quit the game fully once after changing the setting, then launch it again. This clears the existing suspended instance so the new preference can take effect; it is a practical step rather than a stated requirement in Microsoft’s announcement.

Connection problems continue

Disabling Quick Resume cannot fix a server outage, NAT or router issue, account-authentication failure, outdated game software, corrupted local data, or a game-client bug. It changes only whether the game is restored from a suspended state.

Availability in context

Date Status
March 18, 2026 Quick Resume Settings announced for select Xbox Insiders.
April 30, 2026 Per-game control included in the public April Xbox update.
August 2026 Not an Insider-only feature; availability depends on the console’s current system software and rollout.

Independent coverage places the original feature in the Xbox Series X|S context, but dashboard controls can differ by console generation and software version. See Thurrott’s report for that early announcement context.

The Bottom Line

Use the per-game switch as a precision fix: disable Quick Resume for titles that return with stale or invalid online sessions, and leave it enabled where fast, reliable resumption is more valuable than a clean launch.
