Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIf Darkest Dungeon II closes before the main menu on Windows 11, there is no confirmed fix that applies to every player. Start by disabling overlays, updating Windows and your graphics driver, and verifying the game files. For the Epic Games version, Red Hook specifically recommends installing or repairing both the x86 and x64 Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable 2022 packages. Back up local game data before testing a clean profile.
The steps below separate an immediate launch failure from a black screen or a crash while loading a save, so you can try the least destructive checks first.
First identify where the launch fails
The point at which the game closes helps narrow the next test. A crash before the main menu is not necessarily the same problem as a save that fails to load.
| What you see | Start with |
|---|---|
| Steam or Epic shows the game as running, then returns to Play | Close overlays, update Windows and the GPU driver, verify files; Epic players should also check the Visual C++ runtimes. |
| The Red Hook logo appears, then the game closes or hangs | Disable overlays, verify files, then consider a backed-up clean local-data test. |
| Black screen, but music or a cursor is present | Check overlays and display/monitor selection. Back up local data before trying a branch workaround. |
| The window appears off-screen or on the wrong monitor | Check Windows display arrangement and monitor selection before changing saves or reinstalling. |
| The game reaches the menu but crashes on Continue or while entering a mode | Treat it as a possible save or profile issue; back up the data and handle cloud sync carefully. |
| The problem began just after a patch or driver update | Verify files and check for an official game update or support notice. A timing coincidence alone does not establish a confirmed regression. |
Try these low-risk fixes first
1. Restart Windows and close overlays
Restart Windows rather than just closing and reopening the launcher. Before launching again, exit overlay and GPU-monitoring software, including Discord overlay, NVIDIA App or GeForce Experience overlay, AMD overlay, Xbox Game Bar, Overwolf, OBS game capture, MSI Afterburner, and RivaTuner Statistics Server. Restart once more after disabling persistent background tools.

Red Hook recommended disabling third-party overlays in a Steam discussion about a specific black-screen problem; one player reported that closing MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner resolved that case. That makes overlays a worthwhile test, not a universal explanation. Red Hook’s discussion of the black-screen issue
2. Update Windows and the graphics driver
- Open Settings → Windows Update and select Check for updates. Install available updates and restart.
- Install a current stable driver from the official site for your GPU: NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel Driver & Support Assistant.
- Restart Windows, then test the game before making another change.
Steam’s launch-failure guidance also recommends Windows and hardware-driver updates. Driver releases and vendor interfaces change, so use the manufacturer’s current stable offering rather than relying on a version number from an old troubleshooting post. Steam: Games do not run after Preparing to Launch
3. Verify the game files
Verification checks the installed game files and may reacquire damaged or missing files. It does not reset local settings or repair a damaged save.
- Steam: Open Library, right-click Darkest Dungeon II, choose Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files. When the check completes, restart Steam and launch the game. Older Steam support pages may call this tab Local Files.
- Epic Games Launcher: Open Library, select the three-dot menu beside the game, choose Manage, then select Verify. Relaunch when it finishes. Launcher labels can change.
Steam recommends file verification for launch failures. Red Hook’s Epic launch guidance covers an Epic-specific runtime issue but does not document a full current verification walkthrough.

Repair Visual C++ if the Epic build will not launch
Red Hook’s Epic launch article says the game may fail to launch because of a Microsoft Visual C++ error and calls for the Visual C++ Redistributable 2022 in both x86 and x64 versions. This is particularly relevant to the Epic build; it is not evidence that every Steam startup crash is caused by Visual C++.
- Download the current x86 and x64 installers from Microsoft’s Visual C++ Redistributable page.
- Run each installer. Choose Repair if offered; otherwise install the package.
- Restart Windows and try the game again.
Red Hook’s article is dated July 21, 2025 and concerns an Epic launch failure. Avoid third-party DLL downloads and “DLL fixer” utilities; use Microsoft’s packages instead.
Check the PC against Red Hook’s requirements
Red Hook’s published PC requirements list Windows 10, a 64-bit processor and operating system, and these hardware specifications:
| Requirement | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 | Windows 10 |
| Processor | AMD Athlon X4 or Intel Core i5-4460 | Intel Core i7-6700K |
| Memory | 8 GB RAM | 16 GB RAM |
| Graphics | NVIDIA GTX 950 or AMD R7 370 | Not stated by Red Hook’s requirements page |
| Storage | 6 GB | 6 GB |
The requirements page lists Windows 10; it does not explicitly certify every Windows 11 build, and that omission is not proof that Windows 11 is incompatible. Meeting the minimum specs also does not guarantee a crash-free launch. On a laptop with both integrated and dedicated graphics, check Windows Settings → System → Display → Graphics and, where available, the GPU vendor’s control panel to assign the game to the dedicated GPU; labels vary by driver version. Test a clean local configuration without risking saves
If the game used to work and now fails, a damaged local configuration or profile is one possibility. Red Hook places DD2 data under C:Users<Your Username>AppDataLocalLowRedHookDarkest Dungeon II; AppData and LocalLow are hidden folders. Renaming the folder is a reversible diagnostic test, not a guaranteed fix.
- Close the game and its launcher.
- Press Win + R, enter
%USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLowRedHook, and press Enter. - Copy the Darkest Dungeon II folder to a safe location as a backup.
- Rename the original folder to
Darkest Dungeon II.backup. - Launch the game. It should create fresh local data; check whether it reaches the menu.
If this test does not help, close the game and launcher before restoring your backup. Before replacing or deleting profiles, disable Steam Cloud temporarily and preserve a manual copy. If Steam presents a cloud-conflict prompt, do not accept an overwrite until you know which copy contains the files you want. Red Hook’s save-file location guide confirms the data directory.
If the crash happens while loading a save or mode
A crash after reaching the menu, especially when continuing an expedition or entering one particular mode, points more toward a profile or save issue than a basic startup failure. Back up the entire DD2 folder and manage cloud synchronization before touching individual files. Do not delete campaign profiles such as profile_0 or profile_1 without a backup.
Red Hook documents a narrow procedure for crashes when entering The Butcher’s Circus: turn off Steam Cloud, locate the relevant local and remote save folders, and remove profile_9 before testing. This applies to that specific mode and reported issue; it is not a general recommendation to delete profiles. Follow Red Hook’s targeted Butcher’s Circus instructions if that is the failure you have.

Try the older branch workaround only for a black-screen hang
In May 2023, a Red Hook developer suggested trying the Steam coming_in_hot beta branch or Epic’s Experimental branch if disabling overlays did not resolve a specific black-screen issue. Branch names and availability can change, and beta or experimental builds can introduce bugs or affect saves. Back up local data first, test only if the symptom fits, and return to the default branch after the test. This historical advice does not establish a Windows 11-wide defect. Developer post on the black-screen issue
Use Windows N or administrator tests only when applicable
Windows N editions
If your Windows 11 installation is an N edition, it may lack media components used by some games. Microsoft provides the Media Feature Pack for Windows N, and DD2 community troubleshooting specifically points N-edition users toward it. Install it only if you confirm you have an N edition; it is not a general fix for standard Windows 11 Home or Pro.
Run as administrator
As a fallback diagnostic, browse to the game executable, right-click it, and choose Properties → Compatibility. You can test Run this program as an administrator, but note the original setting and undo the test if it does not help. Avoid enabling several compatibility options at once; the available DD2-specific evidence does not establish Windows compatibility mode as a reliable fix.
Keep renderer flags and reinstalling as last resorts
Community posts describe testing renderer launch options such as -force-d3d12 or -d3d11, including a report that forcing DX12 made the problem worse. There is no captured official DD2 guidance establishing either flag as a standard fix. If you choose to experiment, use one option at a time under Steam Properties → General → Launch Options, record the original field, and remove the option if it does not help. Do not combine flags or assume a flag from another game applies. Community discussion of renderer tests

A full reinstall belongs near the end of the escalation path, after verification, runtime repair, and a backed-up local-data test. Reinstalling may leave the AppData profile in place, and it will not correct a missing runtime, overlay conflict, driver issue, or damaged save.
