Minecraft Dungeons II released for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 on September 29, 2026. Nintendo lists a 4.3 GB game file and warns that it “Requires initial content download,” so the displayed file size is not the only space or network consideration.

What Minecraft Dungeons II requires on Switch
Nintendo’s store listing identifies Mojang as the publisher, supports one to four players locally and online, lists a 4.3 GB game file, and includes the warning “Requires initial content download.” The initial download is part of normal installation, not evidence that you bought an incomplete game. Leave more free space than the stated 4.3 GB so the console can download and install additional content.

Identify the failure stage before changing anything
The symptom usually points to the safest first action. Use the table to avoid jumping straight to a reinstall or account change.
| Where it fails | Typical symptom | First action | Save-data risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Download | Progress does not begin, pauses, or stays at the same percentage | Check the connection, close running software, then use Update Download Progress | None from these steps |
| Update | An update appears stuck or the game remains on an old build | Check for the offered software update, then restart the console if progress stops | None from checking or installing an update |
| Launch | The game freezes, closes, or does not respond after selection | Close the game, restart the console, and check for updates | None from closing or restarting |
| Ownership or redemption | The game is unavailable after purchase or a code redemption | Confirm the signed-in Nintendo and Microsoft accounts | Do not delete data while investigating the account |
| Storage | Download fails, installation cannot finish, or the console reports insufficient space | Free internal space or use a compatible Nintendo Switch microSD card | Moving or reinstalling software can require care; do not erase save data as a first step |
Fix a Minecraft Dungeons II download that will not start or is stuck
1. Confirm an active internet connection
On the Switch, confirm that the console is connected to the internet before troubleshooting the game itself. A download cannot resume while the console is offline, disconnected, or repeatedly losing the connection. If the connection has just been restored, give the system time to reconnect before opening another game.
Nintendo’s stuck-download guidance specifically starts with an active internet connection and closing running software. Treat those as separate checks: a console can show network access while an open game still prevents the download from progressing.

Return to HOME and close the software currently running. Nintendo notes that some software pauses downloads while it is being played. Do not launch another game to test the connection immediately; first let the system return to the download queue.
- Press the HOME button.
- Highlight the running game or application.
- Use the software options to close it and confirm.
- Leave the console connected to the internet while the Minecraft Dungeons II download resumes.
Closing software is reversible and does not remove the download or your save data. If the download remains unchanged, continue to the progress command rather than repeatedly starting and closing unrelated games.
3. Resume the download from Update Download Progress
Nintendo provides a specific command for a stalled download. Use this path from HOME:

Minecraft Dungeons II Deluxe Edition includes the base game and the Soul Pack, featuring 4 hero skins, the Soul cape cosmetic item, the Blub pet companion, and DLC 1 & 2.*Requires initial content download. Online console multiplayer/co-op requires a platform specific online subscription (sold separately).
- Fight against a new, challenging threat that puts your combat skills to the test like never before.
- Craft the perfect hero with legendary gear, including a wide range of weapons, armor, and artifacts.
- Open your user page.
- Choose User Settings.
- Select Update Download Progress.
- Allow the console to reconnect and retry the pending download.
This command asks the system to refresh download progress; it is not a request to delete the game. Keep the console connected and avoid launching other software while the retry is underway.
4. Restart the console if the queue still does not move
If Update Download Progress leaves the download stalled, restart the Nintendo Switch. After the restart, wait for the console to reconnect to the internet before opening another game or application. Then check whether the download continues.
A restart is the next low-risk step because it clears a temporary software or network-session problem without removing the installation or save data. Do not interpret a momentarily unchanged percentage immediately after startup as a new failure; allow the system time to re-establish its connection.
5. Check free storage, not just the listed game size
Nintendo lists Minecraft Dungeons II at 4.3 GB and separately says that an initial content download is required. The console therefore needs enough usable space for the listed software and the additional content and installation work. A card or system menu showing approximately 4.3 GB free does not guarantee that installation can finish.
- Check available space in the Switch data-management settings.
- Remove or archive software you no longer need if internal storage is low.
- If appropriate, use a compatible Nintendo Switch microSD card to provide additional space.
- Retry the download after the storage change rather than starting a second copy of the game.
Storage is a likely cause when the download stops near completion, an installation fails after the content transfer, or the console displays an insufficient-space message. The official listing does not provide a separate required-space figure beyond 4.3 GB, so do not treat any larger number as an official requirement.

Fix an update that is stuck or never appears
Check for the offered software update
Nintendo’s downloaded-software guidance covers long loading, lag, freezing, and non-response and directs players to check for updates. From HOME, highlight Minecraft Dungeons II and open the game’s software options; use the internet-based update command shown by the console. Keep the Switch online while it checks and installs the update.

- Minecraft Dungeons II
If an update is offered, let it complete before testing the game. Closing the game and restarting the console are appropriate if the update queue stops responding. Do not repeatedly interrupt an installation that is still advancing.
Separate an update problem from a download problem
An initial installation download and a later software update are different stages. If the game has never completed its first installation, use the download sequence above. If the game is already installed but refuses to launch or remains on an older version, use the update check instead. This distinction prevents deleting a working installation when only a routine update check is needed.
When an update completes but the symptom remains
After the update finishes, close Minecraft Dungeons II and restart the console before launching it again. If the same freezing or non-response symptom returns, record exactly when it occurs—during startup, while loading a world, during gameplay, or while leaving an online session. That timing helps Nintendo support distinguish an installation problem from a game crash.

Start with the reversible sequence
- Close Minecraft Dungeons II from HOME.
- Check whether the console offers a software update and install it.
- Restart the Nintendo Switch.
- Wait for the internet connection to return.
- Launch the game again without opening another title first.
Nintendo’s guidance specifically treats long loading, lag, freezing, and non-response as reasons to check for updates and, if the issue continues, follow Nintendo’s support path. These steps do not erase save data and should be completed before considering a reinstall.
Do not assume another platform’s hotfix is on Switch
Minecraft Feedback’s October 7, 2026 notice for version 1.1.2.0 lists several crash fixes, including crashes during gameplay and when exiting an online game. The notice says rollout began on Steam and would reach Windows and Xbox X|S soon; it does not confirm a Nintendo Switch rollout date.
Consequently, seeing version 1.1.2.0 mentioned in a report does not establish that the Switch build has received it. Check the update offered directly on the Switch. Do not delete and reinstall the game solely because a hotfix is listed for another platform.

Record the exact crash pattern
If restarting and updating do not help, note the following before contacting support:
- Whether the game reaches its title screen.
- Whether the crash occurs offline, online, or in both modes.
- Whether it happens during gameplay, while loading, or when leaving an online game.
- The wording of any error message and the software version shown by the console.
- Whether the issue affects one user profile or every profile on the console.
Those details are more useful than repeatedly reinstalling without knowing which stage fails.
Fix “I bought or redeemed it, but I cannot access it”
Check the Nintendo account currently signed in
Minecraft Help identifies account mismatch as a common cause of access failures. Confirm that the Nintendo account currently using the console is the same account that purchased the game or redeemed the code. A different user profile can make a legitimate purchase appear unavailable.
Check the Microsoft account used with Minecraft
Also verify the Microsoft account associated with the Minecraft sign-in. A Nintendo purchase or redemption and a Minecraft account session can involve different credentials, so confirm both before attempting a reinstall. If the wrong account is active, sign out or change to the account that originally received the purchase or redemption, following the Nintendo Switch-specific instructions in Minecraft Help.
Use the Nintendo Switch-specific redemption or reinstall procedure
Minecraft Help provides separate guidance for Nintendo Switch redemption and reinstall situations. Follow the procedure for the exact case rather than applying instructions for Xbox, PlayStation, Windows, or Steam. If the purchase is visible on the correct account but the game is absent from the HOME menu, use the account’s redownload process; do not buy the title again while the ownership mismatch is unresolved.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe available information does not establish a Nintendo Switch Online subscription requirement for this title. Nintendo lists local and online play, but the listing information here does not state the subscription terms. Do not use an unverified subscription assumption to diagnose an ownership error.

Choose the safest recovery option
Use the least destructive action that matches the failure stage. The following comparison keeps the relevant trade-offs visible.
| Recovery option | Failure stage addressed | Save-data risk | Account or subscription requirement | Storage impact | Reversible? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Check connection and close software | Download paused or not starting | None | Requires an active internet connection; subscription requirement not stated | None | Yes |
| Update Download Progress | Download queue stalled | None | Requires an active internet connection | None | Yes |
| Restart the console | Stalled download, update, or launch session | None | No new account requirement | None | Yes |
| Free space or add a compatible microSD card | Installation cannot finish | None when software is managed without deleting save data | No new account requirement | Adds or reallocates available space | Usually; moving or archiving software must be handled carefully |
| Install an offered update | Launch crash, freezing, lag, or non-response | None from the update itself | Requires the console to reach the update service | Requires room for the update | Not normally rolled back through the console |
| Verify purchase or redemption accounts | Ownership or access failure | None | Requires the original Nintendo and Microsoft account details | None | Yes |
| Reinstall or redownload | Persistent damaged or incomplete installation | Potential risk if save data is deliberately deleted; confirm data handling first | Requires the account that owns or redeemed the game | Requires the full listed file and initial content space again | Software can be redownloaded, but an interrupted process may take time |
| Contact Nintendo support | Persistent failure after the preceding checks | Depends on any action support recommends | Have the relevant account and purchase information available | Not applicable until a remedy is selected | Support will determine the next step |
When reinstalling is justified
Reinstalling should be a later option, not the first response to a stalled percentage or a missing entitlement. It becomes reasonable when the download repeatedly fails after the connection, progress, restart, and storage checks, or when the installed game remains damaged or unresponsive after an update and restart.
Before removing software, verify that you know which Nintendo account owns the purchase or redemption and understand what the console will retain. Do not choose an option that deletes save data merely to remove the game application. A redownload still requires the 4.3 GB listed file plus room for the initial content download.
When to contact Nintendo support
Use Nintendo’s support path when the download remains stalled after Update Download Progress and a restart, when adequate storage and internet access are confirmed but installation repeatedly fails, or when launch failures continue after checking for updates and restarting. Also escalate an ownership problem when the correct Nintendo and Microsoft accounts are signed in but the entitlement is still missing.
Have these details ready:
- The console model: Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2.
- The user profile and Nintendo account involved.
- Whether the title was purchased directly or redeemed with a code.
- The point of failure and the exact on-screen error.
- Available storage and whether the game is installed internally or on a microSD card.
- Whether the failure occurs every time or only during online play.
- The troubleshooting steps already completed.
Providing this information helps support avoid repeating basic checks and keeps the account, storage, and software paths separate.
Quick Recap
Quick checklist
