If Minecraft Java Edition appears to be using integrated graphics, first confirm the renderer shown by Minecraft itself. Press F3 while in a world and check the graphics-adapter or renderer information in the debug overlay. If it lists your NVIDIA, AMD Radeon, or Intel Arc GPU, Minecraft is already using the dedicated adapter—even if Task Manager shows low GPU usage.

If F3 reports Intel integrated graphics or an integrated Radeon GPU when a dedicated GPU is available, add the exact Java executable running your Minecraft instance to Windows Graphics settings, set it to High performance, and restart the game. The three methods below cover Windows, vendor controls, and the underlying driver, power, and launcher problems that can prevent the change from working.

Before changing anything: verify which GPU Minecraft uses

This guide primarily covers Minecraft: Java Edition on Windows 10 and Windows 11. Java Edition normally renders through a Java process such as javaw.exe, not through one universal Minecraft.exe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Launch the exact Minecraft version, modpack, or profile with the problem.
  2. Enter a world or server.
  3. Press F3.
  4. Find the renderer or graphics-adapter information in the debug overlay. Its position can vary by game version and screen resolution.
  5. Write down the exact adapter name and compare it with the dedicated GPU you expect Minecraft to use.

If F3 shows the dedicated GPU, low utilization is not evidence that Minecraft selected the wrong adapter. Java Edition is often CPU-limited: single-thread performance, chunk generation, simulation distance, entities, frame caps, V-Sync, shaders, thermals, RAM behavior, and server latency can all limit performance before the GPU reaches high utilization. Minecraft describes Java Edition as more CPU-intensive than GPU-intensive on its official store page.

Task Manager can still help identify the executable. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, open Details, and look for javaw.exe, java.exe, a Java runtime process, or OpenJDK Platform binary. The exact process may differ between the official Launcher, Prism Launcher, CurseForge, Modrinth App, Lunar, Badlion, and other launchers.

To inspect GPU routing, right-click the Details-column header and enable GPU engine if it is available. Treat this as supporting evidence; F3 is the more direct Minecraft-specific check.

Method 1: Set Minecraft’s Java runtime to High performance in Windows

This is the best default method on current Windows systems because Windows controls per-application GPU preferences and may override a preference made elsewhere.

Find the Java executable used by the affected profile

  1. Start the exact Minecraft profile that has the problem.
  2. Enter a world so the game process is definitely running.
  3. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  4. Select Details.
  5. Find the Java process associated with Minecraft.
  6. Right-click it and select Open file location.
  7. Copy or note the complete path to the executable.

Do not assume that a Java installation found with where java is the one Minecraft uses. Launchers commonly bundle their own runtime, and different profiles may use different Java installations.

Assign that executable to the dedicated GPU

  1. Close Minecraft completely. Close the launcher too if it keeps Java running.
  2. Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
  3. Under the app section, choose Desktop app if Windows asks which type of app you want to add.
  4. Select Browse.
  5. Add the exact javaw.exe or java.exe path found above.
  6. Select the newly added entry and choose Options.
  7. Select High performance. Windows should identify the GPU that option represents.
  8. Select Save.

Fully relaunch the same Minecraft profile, enter a world, and check F3 again. Changing the setting does not move an already-running Java process to another GPU. NVIDIA likewise documents that its preferred-processor changes take effect when the application is launched, not while it is already running.

If you cannot find the Java executable

  • Launch the precise vanilla or modded profile first, then locate its live process in Task Manager.
  • Inspect the profile or instance settings for a Java executable or Java path field.
  • If the same runtime directory contains both java.exe and javaw.exe, add both if necessary.
  • Repeat the assignment for each separate runtime used by different modpacks or launchers.

Adding only MinecraftLauncher.exe may not solve a Java Edition GPU-selection problem. The launcher starts the game, but the Java process performs the rendering.

Method 2: Configure the GPU in the vendor software

Use this as a secondary method or when you need vendor-specific driver profiles. On modern Windows installations, check Windows Graphics settings first.

NVIDIA

  1. Open NVIDIA Control Panel.
  2. Select Manage 3D settings.
  3. Open Program Settings.
  4. Add the exact Java executable used by Minecraft.
  5. Choose the high-performance NVIDIA processor where the option is available.
  6. Select Apply.
  7. Close Minecraft and relaunch it.

NVIDIA explains that Windows can control or override the preferred GPU beginning with Windows 10 version 20H1. For that reason, a setting in NVIDIA Control Panel alone may appear to do nothing. See NVIDIA’s preferred graphics processor guidance and program-settings documentation.

AMD Radeon

For current Windows systems, use Settings > System > Display > Graphics for the per-application GPU choice. AMD says the older Radeon Software Switchable Graphics workflow was removed from Adrenalin beginning with version 19.12.1 because Windows provides these preferences.

AMD Software: Adrenalin can still confirm that the driver is installed, provide application profiles, show performance information, and expose graphics or tuning controls. Available options vary by GPU and installation. Do not rely on old instructions that tell every Radeon user to find a universal “Switchable Graphics” menu. AMD’s current guidance is available in its GPU switching FAQ and application-profile documentation.

Intel

Distinguish an Intel Arc discrete GPU from Intel integrated graphics. Windows Graphics settings remains the broadly applicable way to select the preferred adapter. Intel Graphics Command Center does not provide an identical, universal equivalent to NVIDIA’s preferred-processor control on every system and driver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Method 3: Fix drivers, power mode, and launcher or profile problems

Use this method if Windows is set to High performance but F3 still reports the integrated adapter, or if the correct adapter appears but performance remains poor.

  1. Update the dedicated-GPU driver. Use the GPU manufacturer’s official driver or your laptop manufacturer’s supported package.
  2. Update Windows and reboot.
  3. Connect the laptop to AC power. Battery policies can limit performance or favor the integrated GPU.
  4. Check the laptop’s performance mode. Depending on the model, this may be called Hybrid, Optimus, Discrete GPU, Ultimate, or Performance mode.
  5. Check OEM software or BIOS options only when your manufacturer documents a GPU-mode control.
  6. On a desktop, connect the monitor to the dedicated graphics card. A cable connected to the motherboard can change display routing.
  7. Temporarily disable overlays and custom tuning profiles while testing.
  8. Test an unmodded vanilla profile. This separates a graphics-selection problem from a mod, shader, or launcher problem.
  9. Create a fresh installation or profile if the current launcher installation may be damaged. Minecraft’s launcher troubleshooting guidance includes creating a fresh installation as a diagnostic step.
  10. Assign the Java executable again if the fresh profile uses a different runtime.

Minecraft’s system-requirement guidance also recommends keeping the operating system current. If a clean driver, fresh profile, and correct GPU assignment do not change the result, the cause may be hardware capability, thermal throttling, CPU limits, or a modpack configuration rather than GPU selection.

Why Minecraft may still have low GPU usage

Forcing the dedicated GPU does not guarantee higher FPS. It helps when the integrated adapter was the bottleneck. If F3 already shows the intended GPU, investigate these causes instead:

  • CPU limitation: Minecraft Java frequently depends on single-thread CPU performance.
  • Render or simulation distance: High values increase world processing and chunk work.
  • Chunk generation: Exploring new terrain can temporarily reduce frame rates.
  • Entities and redstone: Large farms, mobs, villagers, and complex mechanisms can add CPU load.
  • Shaders and mods: They can shift the bottleneck between CPU and GPU.
  • FPS limits or V-Sync: A capped game has no reason to use all available GPU capacity.
  • RAM allocation and garbage collection: Too little memory can cause stalls, while excessive allocation does not automatically improve performance.
  • Thermal or power limits: Heat, battery mode, and laptop power profiles can reduce clock speeds.
  • Server latency: Network delay can feel like poor performance even when local rendering is healthy.

Do not treat 100% GPU usage as the goal. A correctly selected GPU may render the current scene efficiently at 20% to 50% utilization, especially with vanilla settings or a frame cap.

Current Minecraft requirements and the 2024 date

The original title’s 2024 wording is outdated. Minecraft published updated Java Edition requirements in July 2026. The current stated minimum target is 1080p at 30 FPS on Fast settings, with a 64-bit operating system, a four-core processor, 8 GB RAM with a discrete GPU or 12 GB with integrated graphics, a Vulkan 1.3-capable GPU, and at least 2 GB of VRAM. The recommended target is 1080p at 60 FPS on Fancy settings, with 16 GB RAM and a more capable GPU with 6 GB VRAM. Check the official requirements for the current platform-specific details.

These are examples, not a promise that every computer with the same label will deliver identical results. Minecraft may launch below the minimum, but performance and visual quality are not guaranteed.

Vulkan should not be treated as a universal GPU-selection fix. Minecraft Java Edition 26.2 describes Vulkan support as experimental, so behavior can vary with the game version and hardware.

Java Edition versus Bedrock Edition

The steps above target Minecraft: Java Edition. Minecraft for Windows, commonly called Bedrock Edition, uses a different Windows application and graphics stack. It may appear as a separate app in Settings > System > Display > Graphics rather than as the Java runtime used by the Launcher.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are troubleshooting Bedrock, add the actual Minecraft for Windows app shown in Windows Graphics settings, set it to High performance, restart it, and verify performance in that edition. Do not add a Java runtime expecting it to control Bedrock.

Final verification checklist

  • You identified whether the problem is Java Edition or Bedrock Edition.
  • You launched the exact affected vanilla, Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, or other profile.
  • You located the Java process used by that profile.
  • You added that executable—not merely the launcher—to Windows Graphics settings.
  • You selected High performance.
  • You closed Minecraft and confirmed its Java processes ended.
  • You relaunched the same profile.
  • F3 now reports the intended NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel Arc adapter.
  • You compared FPS and frame-time behavior under the same world, settings, render distance, and scene.

If F3 confirms the dedicated GPU but FPS is still low, stop treating GPU selection as the problem and investigate CPU load, caps, simulation distance, mods, shaders, thermals, memory, and hardware requirements.
