For one local video, use OBS’s Media Source and check its Loop setting. For a playlist, use VLC Video, make sure VLC is installed, and check Loop Playlist. Then confirm the source is visible and not covered by another source. A black preview, recording, or YouTube output can point to different parts of the setup, so test each before changing capture or graphics settings.
Choose the right OBS source for the cartoon
The first check is whether the cartoon is a single local file or one item in a playlist. OBS documents two relevant sources: Media Source for a file and VLC Video for playlists. The choice matters because the loop control is different. (OBS Media Sources guide, published January 11, 2022.)
One local cartoon file: Media Source
- In OBS, use the Sources dock and add a Media Source if you have not already added one.
- Open the source’s properties and confirm that the intended local video file is selected.
- Enable Loop so the file replays after playback completes. OBS describes this control as specifying whether the file plays again once playback has completed.
- Apply the properties and watch the preview through the end of the file to verify that it starts again.
A playlist: VLC Video
- Add a VLC Video source and add the cartoon files to its playlist.
- Confirm VLC is installed. OBS requires VLC for this source; on a 64-bit OBS setup, use 64-bit VLC.
- Enable Loop Playlist in the source properties if the playlist should repeat after its last item.
- Apply the changes and watch the playlist reach its end to confirm it repeats.
The VLC dependency and bitness requirement apply to the VLC Video source; they are not a general requirement for playing one file through Media Source. (OBS Media Sources guide.)
Check visibility, layering, position, and size
A correctly configured media source can still be hidden. In OBS, sources higher in the Sources list appear above sources lower in the list, so an item above the cartoon may cover it. OBS’s Sources guide also explains visibility, position, and sizing. (OBS Sources Guide, published January 11, 2022.)

- Visibility: Check that the cartoon source is enabled in the Sources dock.
- Layer order: Look for another source above it that could cover the image. Move the cartoon above that source if appropriate, or hide the covering source to test.
- Position and size: Select the cartoon source and check that its image is placed within the canvas and sized as intended.
Find where the black screen appears
Before changing settings, separate the source preview from the final output. The source preview lets you inspect the media source itself; the OBS program view or a recording shows the composed scene; YouTube shows what the platform receives. This is a practical way to narrow down the location of the problem, not a published OBS decision tree for this exact symptom.
- Inspect the source and scene in OBS. Check whether the media source itself is black and whether the composed scene is black. If the source image is visible but the scene is not, revisit visibility and layer order.
- Make a short local recording. Play it back and note whether the cartoon appears in the recording. This checks the composed output independently of YouTube delivery.
- Run a short test stream if needed. Check the resulting YouTube video rather than assuming that a visible OBS preview guarantees the same platform output.

Use capture-specific fixes only for capture sources
Game Capture and display capture are different from playing a local cartoon through Media Source or VLC Video. OBS’s black-screen Game Capture guidance concerns Game Capture; its laptop troubleshooting guidance discusses dual-GPU laptops and display capture. Those guides do not establish a GPU mismatch as the cause of a black local media file.
- If the black image comes from Game Capture, follow OBS’s Game Capture troubleshooting guide (published January 12, 2022).
- If the black image comes from display capture on a laptop, consult OBS’s laptop troubleshooting guide (published June 12, 2021).
- If the source is Media Source or VLC Video, start with its file or playlist settings, visibility, and layer order instead.
