If OBS stops after the last study video, first identify the source type: enable Loop for a single-file Media Source, or check Loop Playlist for a VLC Video playlist. If playback stops around a scene change, inspect the VLC source’s Visibility Behaviour. The right fix depends on whether you want the entire playlist to repeat or want OBS to pause and switch scenes after each item.
Check whether the source is a single video or a playlist
In OBS, look at the Sources list and open the properties for the source playing the study video. A Media Source plays a file; a VLC Video source can play a playlist. Their repeat controls are different, so do not assume one setting applies to both. The OBS documentation says Media Source Loop is off by default and VLC Video Loop Playlist is on by default, but verify the installed source’s actual properties. OBS Media Sources documentation
One file: enable Loop on the Media Source
- In the OBS Sources list, select the Media Source and open its properties.
- Enable Loop if that file should begin again when it finishes.
- Apply the change and test playback through the end of the file.
Show nothing when playback ends is a separate Media Source option: it hides the source after the file ends. It does not make the file repeat. If you need continuous playback, check Loop.
Several files: check Loop Playlist on VLC Video
- Select the VLC Video source in Sources and open its properties.
- Confirm the intended playlist is present and enable Loop Playlist if it should restart after its final item.
- Test the transition from the last item back to the first.
VLC Video requires VLC to be installed. OBS’s documentation specifies that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. If VLC Video is missing or unavailable, check that both applications are installed with matching architecture. OBS Media Sources documentation

Decide whether the playlist should repeat or pause after each video
Looping the playlist and pausing after every item are different workflows. Loop Playlist is for repeating the list. If you want each study video to finish, switch scenes, and resume later on a schedule, you need separate automation rather than relying on a playlist-ended state.
When looping is the goal
Enable Loop Playlist, then test the last-to-first transition. If the stream still stops, reproduce the problem with the VLC source’s properties open and note whether the source remains visible and whether a scene change coincides with the stop.

When each item should stop for a scene switch
An OBS forum user described using Advanced Scene Switcher to switch scenes when the current item had less than one second remaining, with the VLC source set to pause when inactive and resume when active. A separate forum discussion notes that an endlessly looping VLC playlist will not reach an ended or played-to-end state. Check scene visibility if playback stops during a transition
If the symptom appears when you change scenes or hide the VLC source, inspect its Visibility Behaviour setting. OBS documents options to stop when not visible and restart when visible, pause when not visible and resume when visible, or keep playing while not visible. Choose the behavior that matches your scene workflow, then test the transition that triggers the problem. OBS Media Sources documentation
Troubleshoot the failure in order
- Identify the source. A single file in Media Source uses Loop; a VLC playlist uses Loop Playlist.
- Clarify the intended behavior. Decide whether the full playlist should repeat or whether OBS should pause and switch scenes after each item.
- Test scene changes. If playback stops or resets when the source becomes hidden, adjust VLC Video’s Visibility Behaviour and reproduce the transition.
- Check VLC installation and architecture. VLC Video needs VLC installed; for 64-bit OBS, OBS’s documentation specifies 64-bit VLC.
- Review automation logic. If a looping playlist never triggers an ended state, test remaining-time detection for the current item instead. Treat forum-described macros as workarounds, not guarantees.
- Reproduce with the relevant settings. Note the OBS version, source type and properties, operating system, and whether the stop happens at the end of a file, the end of the playlist, or a scene transition. Without those details, the exact cause cannot be identified.
