OriginThinSetup.exe is the legacy Origin bootstrapper, and reinstalling it is no longer the right fix. EA’s current Windows guidance says, “Origin is no longer available for Windows,” and directs players to the EA app. Download a fresh EA app installer from EA’s official site first; then use the checks below if the installer itself will not launch or reports an error.
The sequence matters: replace the obsolete bootstrapper, obtain a clean download, try administrator rights, check security and permissions, repair missing Microsoft Visual C++ components, and clear the EA app cache only when a partial installation is already present.

What OriginThinSetup.exe is and why it may do nothing
OriginThinSetup.exe was a small bootstrapper. It was not the complete game client; its job was to start, contact EA’s servers, and retrieve the remaining Origin files. Because Origin for Windows has been replaced by the EA app, an old copy can fail before any visible window appears. A double-click that produces no dialog does not necessarily mean Windows is broken—the file may simply be obsolete, incomplete, blocked, or unable to start its required components.
The filename alone does not prove that a copy is genuine. Treat a file as trustworthy only when you obtained it from EA’s official download flow. Do not use a “fixed” copy from a file-sharing site, and do not bypass a Windows warning merely because the name looks familiar.

Before changing anything, identify your exact state
- Confirm the filename. The legacy file is normally shown as
OriginThinSetup.exe; a differently named executable should be treated as a separate case. - Record your Windows edition and version. EA’s current cache instructions specifically cover Windows 10 and Windows 11.
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. On the Processes or Details view, check whether the installer appears briefly and then disappears. That distinction helps separate a launch block from a setup failure. - Write down every visible error number or phrase. “Unknown fatal error” and
INST-14-1603require a different dependency check from a file that never creates a window. - Keep the installer in a local folder you can write to, such as your Downloads folder. A file launched from removable or network storage can have additional policy restrictions.
Fix OriginThinSetup.exe not opening
1. Stop using the legacy bootstrapper and get the current EA app
This is the most important step. EA no longer provides Origin for Windows as the supported client, so repeatedly launching the old bootstrapper is unlikely to produce a durable installation.
- Restart Windows. This clears a pending installer process and completes updates that may otherwise lock files.
- Confirm that your internet connection is stable. The EA app installer must reach EA’s download service to obtain its full files.
- Go to EA’s official EA app download page and download a new installer. Do not reuse the old OriginThinSetup.exe file.
- When the download finishes, run the new EA app installer. If Windows asks for permission, choose Yes only after confirming that you started the download from EA.
If the EA app installs successfully, OriginThinSetup.exe is no longer needed. Remove the obsolete file so that you do not accidentally launch it during a later reinstall.
2. Delete a possibly incomplete download and download it again
A bootstrapper that was interrupted, truncated, or altered in transit may appear to open and then close without feedback. EA’s installation guidance specifically recommends deleting a suspect file and downloading a fresh copy.
- Close the installer and any EA-related process visible in Task Manager.
- Delete the old OriginThinSetup.exe or EA app installer from the folder where it was saved.
- Start a new download from EA’s official page. Wait for the browser to report that the download is complete before opening it.
- Launch the new file from a local folder. If the browser offers to run the file immediately, saving it first makes it easier to remove and replace if the attempt fails.
Do not download individual DLL files from an unofficial site to compensate for a failed bootstrapper. If a runtime is missing, install the supported Microsoft package described in the next section instead.

3. Run the current installer with administrator rights
For the specific OriginThinSetup.exe launch failure, an EA forum support reply recommends using administrator rights and the latest installer.
- Right-click the newly downloaded EA app installer.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt if the publisher and file are the ones you intended to run.
- Allow the setup to finish without closing the window. A bootstrapper may spend time downloading files before the main interface appears.
Administrator rights do not make an untrusted file safe and do not repair a corrupt download. They only give a legitimate installer permission to create folders, services, and registry entries that a standard account may not be allowed to write.
4. Check Windows security controls and write permissions
Windows security software, controlled-folder policies, corporate endpoint protection, and a directory without write access can stop a bootstrapper before it displays a useful message. EA identifies system configuration as a possible source of installation errors.
- Review Windows Security’s protection history for an event at the time you launched the installer. If the official EA installer was blocked, follow the prompt to allow that specific file only when you have verified its source.
- Check whether controlled-folder, application-control, or company device-management rules are preventing new programs from writing to your user folders. On a work or school computer, ask the administrator to allow the official EA installer rather than changing policy yourself.
- Use a folder where your account has write access, then repeat the administrator step.
- Do not disable antivirus or Windows protection indefinitely. If a security product is producing a false positive, use its documented, temporary allow-list process and restore normal protection after installation.
If the installer is blocked by an organization’s policy, only that organization’s administrator can provide a lasting fix. Repeatedly downloading the same file will not override a policy restriction.

5. Repair missing Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables
EA associates error INST-14-1603, described as an unknown fatal error, with missing runtime components in some installations. The remedy is to manually install the required Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables from Microsoft, restart Windows, confirm a stable connection, and then run a newly downloaded EA app installer.
- Use Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable guidance and install the package required by your Windows installation and the EA app.
- Complete the runtime installation, even if Windows reports that a component is already present or offers to repair it.
- Restart Windows. A restart is required before the installer can reliably load the updated runtime.
- After restarting, obtain a fresh EA app installer rather than reusing the failed bootstrapper.
- Run the fresh installer while connected to a stable network.
Do not substitute random copies of msvcp or vcruntime DLL files. A matching redistributable package is safer and easier to remove or repair than an isolated DLL copied into a system folder.
6. Clear the EA app cache after a partial installation
Cache clearing is useful when the EA app is already installed but is stuck in offline mode, refuses to update, or behaves as if an older installation is still present. It is not the first remedy for a legacy OriginThinSetup.exe file that never opens.

- Open the EA app.
- Select Help.
- Choose App Recovery.
- Select Clear Cache and allow the app to restart.
If the EA app cannot be opened, use EA’s Windows 10 and Windows 11 App Recovery instructions for the no-launch case. The exact recovery entry point can differ depending on whether the app is partially installed, so follow the current Windows-specific path rather than deleting arbitrary EA folders.

After the cache is cleared, try signing in and updating once. If the app still reports that an older installation remains, close it, restart Windows, and return to the fresh-installer and permission checks above instead of launching OriginThinSetup.exe again.
7. Confirm the installer is not being terminated immediately
Task Manager can show whether the process starts at all. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, then watch the process list while launching the fresh EA app installer.
- If no installer process appears, Windows or security policy is blocking the launch before setup begins. Recheck the download source, file permissions, and protection history.
- If the process appears briefly and exits, try the administrator launch with a fresh file and inspect for a security event at the same time.
- If the process remains active but no window appears, wait for network activity to finish, then check for an error dialog behind other windows. Do not start several copies at once.
Record the installer filename, your Windows version, the exact error text, and whether the process appeared. Those details are more useful to support than “it does nothing.”

There is no window or message
Use the current EA app installer, delete and redownload it, then try Run as administrator. If the process is still blocked, inspect Windows security and organizational permissions. A legacy OriginThinSetup.exe file should not be treated as the reference test because Origin for Windows is discontinued.

The setup says it encountered an error
Capture the exact wording and code before closing the dialog. Repeat with a fresh download, stable internet, and administrator rights. If security policy is involved, have the device administrator allow the official installer. For INST-14-1603, complete the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable procedure and restart Windows before trying again.
The EA app is installed but offline or will not update
This is a cache or post-install state. Use Help → App Recovery → Clear Cache when the app opens, or EA’s Windows 10/11 recovery procedure when it does not. Do not keep reinstalling OriginThinSetup.exe for this symptom.
The installer works on one account but not another
That pattern points to profile permissions or a per-user cache rather than a universal download failure. Sign in to the affected Windows account, use a local writable folder, and repeat the administrator and security checks. On a managed computer, ask the administrator to test the official installer under the organization’s approved policy.

If the documented sequence still fails, stop cycling through old installers and escalate with a complete record:
- the exact installer filename and where it came from;
- your Windows version and whether the computer is personally managed or controlled by an organization;
- the full error message and code, including
INST-14-1603if shown; - whether the process appeared in Task Manager and whether it exited immediately;
- which actions you completed: fresh EA app download, administrator launch, security review, Visual C++ installation, restart, and cache recovery.
Submit those details through EA’s Error Reporter or EA Help. Include the time of the failure and any protection-history event, but do not upload personal files or credentials. Support can then distinguish a server or account issue from a local permission, runtime, or policy problem.

If those steps fail, preserve the exact error and process details and send them to EA instead of continuing to reinstall the discontinued Origin bootstrapper.
