Fix Realtek High Definition Audio Driver Issues in Windows 10

Work through safe manual checks first, then reset, replace or roll back the Realtek audio driver when Windows 10 sound stops working.

If sound stopped on a Windows 10 PC that uses Realtek High Definition Audio, start with the output device, cables, mute controls and Windows audio settings before changing drivers. Then work through the least-invasive software fixes: disable enhancements, run the audio troubleshooter, restart audio services and update the driver in Device Manager. If that fails, uninstall and reinstall the driver, try Microsoft’s generic High Definition Audio driver, roll back a recent update or install the exact package from your PC or motherboard manufacturer. A USB audio adapter is a separate hardware path when the onboard codec or jack has failed.

These steps apply to speakers, headphones and front- or rear-panel jacks on Windows 10. Microsoft ended free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance and security fixes for Windows 10 after October 14, 2025, so a working driver does not change the operating system’s unsupported status.

What a Realtek driver problem looks like

Realtek High Definition Audio is the software interface Windows uses to communicate with an onboard audio codec. A problem can appear in several ways:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The speakers or headphones are missing from the taskbar sound menu.
  • The Realtek device has disappeared from Device Manager or is shown with a warning icon.
  • Windows reports “No audio output device is installed.”
  • The device is listed and the level meter moves, but you hear nothing.
  • Sound is distorted, crackles, cuts out or stopped immediately after Windows Update.

The message or symptom does not prove that the Realtek chip is defective. An incorrect output selection, a muted mixer, an enhancement effect, an incompatible driver or a stopped Windows service can all produce the same result.

Before changing the driver: check the simple causes

Select the output Windows should use

  1. Select the speaker icon on the taskbar.
  2. Open the output-device list (the arrow beside the volume control in Windows 10).
  3. Choose the connected Realtek speakers, headphones or monitor output you actually want. A monitor connected by HDMI or DisplayPort can become the default instead of the analog jack.

Play a test sound after selecting the device. If the wrong device was selected, no driver repair is required.

Check power, jacks and volume

  • Confirm powered speakers are switched on and their own volume knob is raised.
  • Check that a headset plug is fully inserted into the correct 3.5 mm jack. On a desktop, test both the rear motherboard jack and the front-panel jack if available.
  • Inspect the cable for damage and test another pair of headphones or speakers.
  • Open the taskbar volume mixer and make sure neither the master control nor the affected application’s slider is muted.
  • For USB speakers or a USB headset, move the device to another USB port, preferably one directly on the computer rather than through an unpowered hub.

If a second headset works, the original accessory or cable is the likely fault. If every output is silent, continue with Windows diagnostics.

Restore sound with Windows settings and services

Disable audio enhancements

Enhancement effects can conflict with a driver or produce crackling. In Windows 10:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Choose Hardware and Sound, then Sound.
  3. On the Playback tab, select the affected device and choose Properties.
  4. Open the Enhancements tab.
  5. Select Disable all enhancements (or Disable all sound effects), choose Apply, then test audio.

If the Enhancements tab is absent, use the device’s available settings and move on; newer driver packages expose different tabs.

Try another default format

A sample-rate or bit-depth mismatch can cause distortion even when the device appears healthy. In the same playback-device Properties window, open Advanced. Select a different value under Default Format, apply it, and play audio again. Record the original value so you can return to it if the change does not help. Avoid changing several settings at once, because that makes the cause harder to identify.

Run the built-in troubleshooter and Windows Update

Open the Get Help app and run its automated audio troubleshooter. It checks common output, mute and driver conditions and may apply a correction. Also open Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update, select Check for updates, install applicable updates and restart. If the failure began directly after an update, note that timing and use the rollback procedure below instead of repeatedly installing the same update.

Restart the Windows audio services

A listed device that remains silent can be affected by a service that failed to start. Save your work, then:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows key + R, type services.msc and press Enter.
  2. Find Windows Audio. Right-click it and choose Restart. If it is stopped, choose Start.
  3. Repeat for Windows Audio Endpoint Builder.
  4. Find Remote Procedure Call (RPC). It should normally be running; restart it only if Windows permits the action and other services report a dependency problem.
  5. Close the Services window and test the output again.

Do not disable these services or change their startup type merely to troubleshoot sound. They are shared Windows components, and stopping them can affect other applications.

Update the Realtek driver in Device Manager

Let Windows search automatically

  1. Right-click the Start button and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  3. Right-click Realtek High Definition Audio (the name may differ) and choose Update driver.
  4. Select Search automatically for drivers and follow any prompts.
  5. Restart Windows even if Device Manager says the best driver is already installed.

If the Realtek entry is missing, open View → Show hidden devices. Also check Other devices for an unknown multimedia or audio controller. A warning icon or an error code gives useful evidence, but the same repair sequence still applies.

Uninstall, restart and allow Windows to reinstall

Use this reset when updating did not help or the installed package is corrupted:

  1. In Device Manager, right-click the audio device and choose Uninstall device.
  2. When offered, select Attempt to remove the driver for this device (the wording can vary).
  3. Confirm the uninstall and restart the PC.
  4. After Windows starts, wait for hardware detection to finish, then check the output list and play a test sound.

Windows normally redetects the audio controller and reinstalls an available driver during the restart. If the device is still absent, return to Device Manager and use Action → Scan for hardware changes.

  1. Right-click the audio device in Device Manager and choose Update driver.
  2. Select Browse my computer for drivers.
  3. Choose Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.
  4. Select High Definition Audio Device, continue through the confirmation and restart.

The generic driver can restore basic playback when a vendor package is incompatible. It may not expose every motherboard-specific feature, such as a custom control panel, jack detection behavior or bundled effects. You can return to the vendor package later.

Handle the IDT High Definition Audio CODEC case

Some systems identify the controller as IDT High Definition Audio CODEC rather than Realtek. If the device is present but its package will not work, use the same manual driver selection path and choose High Definition Audio Device from the preinstalled list. This is a compatibility test, not proof that the hardware has changed brands.

Repair audio that broke after Windows Update

Roll back the driver

If sound worked until a Windows or driver update, restore the previous driver first:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Device Manager and expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  2. Open the audio device’s Properties.
  3. On the Driver tab, choose Roll Back Driver.
  4. Choose a reason, confirm and restart.

The rollback button is unavailable when Windows has no previous package to restore. If rollback is ineffective, use System Restore to select a restore point from before the audio failure, provided restore points exist. A restore affects system files and installed programs, not personal documents, but review the list of affected programs before confirming.

Why update timing matters

Microsoft notes that audio can stop after a Windows update when the installed audio driver is incompatible or audio services fail to start. That makes rollback and service checks more appropriate than immediately replacing cables or assuming the codec is dead. If the failure persists across several restarts and driver versions, move to the exact OEM package and hardware tests.

Install the exact manufacturer driver

When Windows cannot find a usable package, download the audio driver from the support page for the specific computer, motherboard or sound device. Search by the complete model number, not only the processor name or the word “Realtek.” Verify that the package supports Windows 10 and your system architecture before installing.

  1. Identify the model in Settings → System → About, on the computer’s service label or in the motherboard documentation.
  2. Use the manufacturer’s support site and select the matching model and Windows 10 edition or architecture offered there.
  3. Download the audio driver package and read its release notes for prerequisites or required restart steps.
  4. Close audio applications, run the installer as directed, restart and test both rear and front outputs.

Do not use a driver intended for a different model simply because it has the same Realtek name. OEM packages can contain the codec configuration, jack detection and amplifier settings unique to that board.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a controlled test after every change

Make one change at a time and test with the same known-good audio clip. Note whether the device appears in the output list, whether the volume meter moves and whether playback is silent, distorted or intermittent. This separates a driver problem from a particular application, cable or jack. If headphones work but powered speakers do not, the Windows driver is probably functioning and the speaker path needs attention. If no output appears at all, return to Device Manager rather than repeatedly changing format settings.

Before uninstalling a driver or using System Restore, save open work and record the current driver name and version from the device’s Driver tab. Avoid downloading packages from unofficial driver-collection sites; the exact computer or motherboard manufacturer is the safer source. A generic driver is useful for diagnosis, but reinstall the OEM package if you need vendor controls or special jack behavior.

When the onboard audio may be a hardware problem

If the controller disappears even after showing hidden devices, the exact OEM package and the generic driver both fail, and every known-good headset or speaker is silent, the motherboard codec, jack or front-panel wiring may be defective. A firmware setting can also disable onboard audio; check the motherboard manual for an Onboard Audio, HD Audio or similar setting in UEFI/BIOS before assuming failure. Change only the audio setting and record the original value so it can be restored.

Use a USB audio adapter as a separate path

A USB audio adapter bypasses the motherboard’s analog codec and jack. It is a fallback accessory, not a guaranteed Realtek-driver repair. Connect it directly, select it in the Windows output list and install a device-specific package if its manufacturer supplies one. Windows 10 can load the standard USB Audio 2.0 driver, usbaudio2.sys; Microsoft documents a first-connection case on Windows 10 Version 1703 in which the system detects a USB audio device but initially loads the standard driver instead of the device-specific driver. If the adapter is not recognized, use Device Manager to update or uninstall it, restart, and let Windows reinstall it before trying the manufacturer’s package.

Choose the next fix by symptom

Symptom or timing Best next action What the result means
Wrong device, mute or loose connection Select the intended output; check power, cables, jacks and volume Sound returns without a driver change
Crackling or processed sound Disable enhancements and test another default format An audio-processing or format conflict was involved
Device listed but silent Restart Windows Audio, Endpoint Builder and check RPC; then run the troubleshooter A service or configuration failure is more likely than missing hardware
Driver warning or corrupted installation Update in Device Manager; if needed uninstall, restart and reinstall Windows rebuilds its driver association
Failure immediately after Windows Update Roll back the driver or use System Restore The new package or update is a likely trigger
Windows cannot find a suitable driver Install the exact computer or motherboard OEM package Model-specific configuration may be required
Persistent onboard failure Check UEFI audio setting, then test a USB audio adapter The codec, jack or onboard path may be faulty

Why is my Realtek High Definition Audio driver missing?

Open Device Manager and choose View → Show hidden devices. Check Sound, video and game controllers and Other devices for an unknown multimedia or audio controller. Use Action → Scan for hardware changes, restart Windows, and install the matching computer or motherboard driver if Windows does not redetect the device.

How do I reinstall the Realtek driver?

Why did sound stop immediately after a Windows update?

Microsoft says an incompatible audio driver or audio services that failed to start can stop sound after an update. Restart Windows Audio, Windows Audio Endpoint Builder and check RPC. Then use Device Manager → Properties → Driver → Roll Back Driver, or use System Restore if a suitable restore point exists.

Should I use Microsoft’s generic High Definition Audio driver?

It is a useful compatibility test and can restore basic playback when a Realtek package is incompatible. It may omit custom control panels, jack detection behavior or bundled effects, so use the manufacturer package when those features matter.

What if the device is listed but there is still no sound?

Confirm the correct output is selected and the mixer is not muted. Disable enhancements, test another default format, restart the Windows audio services and run the troubleshooter. Also test a different headset or speaker to rule out the accessory and cable.

Can a USB audio adapter fix a failed Realtek codec?

A USB audio adapter provides a separate hardware path that bypasses the motherboard codec and analog jack. Select it as the output device and install its device-specific driver if supplied. It is a fallback accessory, not a repair to the onboard Realtek hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should I contact the computer or motherboard manufacturer?

Contact the manufacturer when Windows cannot find a suitable driver, the controller remains missing after reinstalling, or the OEM package is required for jack detection and amplifier features. Provide the exact model, Windows architecture and any Device Manager warning or error information.

The Bottom Line

Start with the selected output, physical connections, mute state and volume. Then disable enhancements, test another format, run the troubleshooter and restart the audio services. Use Device Manager to update or uninstall and reinstall the driver, try Microsoft’s generic driver or roll back an update when timing points to Windows Update. Install the exact OEM package when model-specific support is needed. If onboard audio still fails, a USB audio adapter can bypass the failed codec or jack.
