Steam marks Retro Rewind: Video Store Simulator as “Playable” on Steam Deck, but that designation does not guarantee a crash-free experience on every game version, save, or setup. There is no confirmed universal fix: start by identifying where the crash happens, checking for mods and updates, then use only the workaround that matches your symptoms.
First, identify when Retro Rewind crashes
Before changing settings, note whether Retro Rewind: Video Store Simulator crashes at launch, at the main menu, or while loading a save. Also record whether you use mods, whether the problem began after a game update, the game build, and the selected Proton version. These details matter because the documented workarounds address different situations.
- Crash after an update with mods installed: The developer says updates can cause issues or crashes when mods are installed, and documents an older branch for some Fatal Crash errors.
- Main-menu crash: A June 24, 2026 patch note says a potential main-menu crash was fixed in CL 2308. Make sure the game is updated before concluding that this particular issue remains.
- Crash while loading a save: A single user-submitted Proton report describes this on a Linux desktop, but it does not establish that the same failure occurs on Steam Deck.
Try the developer’s branch only if the mod-related guidance fits
Blood Pact Studios’ Steam Community notes say players experiencing issues such as a Fatal Crash error can switch to the RepairStationBuild branch. The note connects the issue to updates and installed mods; it does not promise that the branch fixes every crash or every Steam Deck setup.
The tradeoff is important: RepairStationBuild is pinned to version 2198 and does not receive updates. Treat it as a version rollback to try when the documented circumstances match, not as a permanent or universal fix. The branch guidance is in the developer’s Steam Community notes.

Check for the scoped main-menu fix
Blood Pact Studios’ June 24, 2026 patch notes for CL 2308 say a potential crash from the main menu was fixed. Update the game and check whether the problem still occurs. That note applies specifically to a potential main-menu crash; it does not say that save-loading crashes, the Proton report below, or all Steam Deck crashes were fixed. See the patch notes.
What the Proton crash report does—and does not—show
A user report filed on March 19, 2026, with ValveSoftware’s Proton compatibility tracker describes a crash while loading a save under Proton Experimental on a Linux desktop using a GTX 1660 Super. The report mentions DXGI_ERROR_INVALID_CALL in a rendering-thread exception. It is one user report, not an official diagnosis or a Steam Deck test, so it cannot establish a cause or a general fix for Deck users. The report is available at Proton issue #9594.

Why “Playable” does not settle an individual crash
Steam’s store listing labels the game “Playable” for Steam Deck. That is a compatibility designation, not evidence that every save, mod, game build, or device configuration will run without crashes. The store lists Windows 11 and Windows PC requirements, including DirectX 11; it does not publish SteamOS or Proton requirements. It also identifies Unreal Engine and customizable graphics options, but neither fact establishes a specific Deck setting that will resolve a crash. See the Steam store listing.
