Check OBS dropped-frame and encoding statistics, SRS logs and forwarding, YouTube stream health, and VPS resource and network measurements before changing settings or upgrading the server. These symptoms point to different causes, so changing bitrate or SRS queue settings blindly can make diagnosis harder.
Identify where the stutter starts
The publishing path is encoder (often OBS) → SRS on the VPS → YouTube ingest. Viewer playback is another stage: a stream can reach YouTube cleanly while some viewers still experience buffering. Record what you observe before making changes.
- OBS: Watch the dropped-frames indicator, open the Stats window, and review the log. Distinguish network-dropped frames from skipped frames caused by encoding lag or rendering lag.
- SRS: Check whether the publisher remains connected and whether forwarding to YouTube stays connected. Note relevant errors and the time they occur.
- YouTube: Check the Live Control Room’s stream-health feedback for warnings.
- Viewers: Establish whether the problem affects the stream in YouTube’s preview or stream health, or appears only during viewer playback.
The OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, dated September 30, 2024, defines dropped frames this way: “Dropped frames means that your connection to remote server isn’t stable or you can’t keep up with your set bitrate.” That describes OBS network-dropped frames; it does not mean every kind of stutter is a network problem.
Check OBS encoder settings and upload capacity
Compare your output settings with YouTube’s current recommendations, then choose a bitrate your connection can sustain reliably—not just a peak speed shown by a single upload test. YouTube recommends testing with representative motion and audio and monitoring stream health while live. Its live encoder settings page says YouTube detects encoder settings automatically by default and transcodes streams for viewers.

Use the right settings as a starting point
YouTube’s current encoder table recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds), and RTMPS for YouTube Live. For H.264, the table lists these bitrate figures:
| H.264 output | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s encoder bitrate recommendations, not VPS CPU or RAM requirements. The table varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate; check YouTube’s current page for the settings appropriate to your output. If OBS network drops rise, try a lower bitrate that remains suitable for the stream you need to deliver.

Separate encoding and rendering trouble from network drops
If OBS reports encoding lag or rendering lag rather than network-dropped frames, investigate the encoder or rendering workload instead of treating it as proof that the connection to SRS is unstable. Keep the symptom label and its timing in your notes; it determines which branch to test next.
Test the OBS-to-SRS connection
If OBS reports network-dropped frames, verify the configured SRS endpoint and the encoder’s stable upstream capacity. A speed-test peak alone does not establish that the route can sustain the configured bitrate throughout a live session.

- Confirm the destination: Check the server address and stream key or publishing path configured in OBS against the SRS endpoint you intend to use. Redact the key from screenshots, logs, and support requests; treat it as a credential.
- Compare bitrate with stable upload: Reduce the output bitrate for a controlled test. If network drops stop, the configured rate or route may exceed sustainable capacity; repeat with representative movement and audio.
- Check the local route: If the encoder is on Wi-Fi, test a wired connection where practical. Temporarily check whether a VPN, security software, or network-optimization software affects the connection.
- Use another destination only as a diagnostic: OBS suggests testing another server or destination. A change in outcome helps isolate a route or destination issue, but does not by itself prove the root cause.
These are diagnostic checks, not a presumption that OBS or Wi-Fi is at fault. OBS notes that unstable connections can involve network, software, hardware, or ISP conditions.
Check SRS reception and forwarding
SRS supports RTMP publishing from OBS or FFmpeg and can convert or forward streams. Verify separately that SRS receives a stable publisher and that its downstream forward to YouTube stays connected. If input is clean but output stutters, investigate SRS forwarding, the VPS’s outbound network, timestamps, and queue pressure.

SRS documents RTMP live-queue and timestamp-jitter controls. They are relevant when logs or measurements point to queueing, dropped GOPs, or timestamp behavior—not as generic stutter switches. Record the current configuration and change one relevant option at a time; a change that hides one symptom can create another.
The SRS overview describes deployments on cloud virtual machines and recommends inspecting process status and logs. It is a v4-era overview, useful for basic architecture context rather than current release advice. The RTMP configuration documentation is marked SRS v7.0 unstable; use it to identify controls, not as a recommendation to run that version in production.

Measure the VPS during the failure
Reproduce the stutter and inspect the host at the same time. Compare SRS ingress and egress rates if available, and look for:
- CPU saturation or throttling;
- memory pressure;
- network-interface errors or packet loss;
- outbound capacity that cannot sustain the forwarded stream; and
- a gap between stable input to SRS and its output toward YouTube.
The reviewed SRS and YouTube guidance does not specify a minimum VPS vCPU, RAM, or network specification for one forwarded stream. The capacity needed depends on the stream’s codec, resolution, frame rate, SRS features, and provider network; do not treat a particular instance size as a universal fix. If the VPS has headroom and SRS output is stable, viewer reports alone are not a reason to resize it.
If measurements implicate the host, compare providers or locations using outbound bandwidth, route and region, CPU allocation and throttling policy, and provider support. CPU-core counts or VPS prices alone do not establish streaming quality.
Compare relayed and direct publishing
Where practical, test the same encoder directly to YouTube and compare it with the SRS-forwarded path. This controlled comparison can narrow the investigation, but cannot guarantee a root cause:
- Direct is smooth; relayed stutters: Focus on SRS forwarding, VPS egress, and the route from the VPS to YouTube.
- Both paths stutter: Revisit encoder settings, stable upload capacity, and the destination ingest; use OBS and YouTube diagnostics to distinguish them.
- Both paths look healthy, but some viewers buffer: The reported playback problem may be downstream of ingest; check YouTube stream health and whether the issue is consistent across viewers.
Apply fixes one at a time
- Write down the first observed error, its time, and whether OBS labels it network, encoding, or rendering related.
- Record OBS output settings, OBS statistics, SRS logs and relevant ingress/egress observations, YouTube stream-health feedback, and VPS resource measurements.
- Change one variable and repeat the same representative test. Start with bitrate when network drops track unstable capacity.
- Change an SRS queue or timestamp setting only when logs or measurements point to that behavior.
- Consider a different VPS location or provider only when route, resource, or outbound-capacity measurements implicate the existing host.
