If Steam Mobile’s Steam Guard QR scanner will not open the camera—and Steam does not appear under Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera—make Steam request camera access through its profile-photo editor first.
- Open Steam Mobile and go to your profile.
- Tap Edit Profile, then your avatar or profile picture.
- Choose Take a Photo, Take Picture, or the equivalent camera option.
- Tap Allow when iOS asks for camera access.
- Force-close Steam Mobile, reopen it, and try the Steam Guard QR scanner again.
This is a community-reported workaround for an apparent Steam Mobile permission-prompt problem, not a Valve-confirmed guaranteed fix. It is safer to try than uninstalling Steam, because removing the app or authenticator can complicate account recovery.

First, identify which Steam Guard problem you have
Several different failures can look similar:
- The Steam Guard scanner is blank, gray, or inactive.
- Tapping the QR scanner says camera access is required, but iOS shows no permission prompt.
- Steam is missing from Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera.
- Steam appears in Camera settings, but its switch is off.
- The camera opens, but Steam cannot recognize the QR code.
- The QR option is missing because mobile-authenticator setup is not complete.
- Steam crashes or closes after the scan begins.
The profile-photo workaround is mainly for the second and third cases: Steam Mobile has apparently failed to trigger iOS’s camera-permission request.
Why Steam may be missing from Camera settings
iOS does not necessarily show every installed app in the Camera permissions list. Apple’s guidance indicates that apps appear there after they have requested camera access. Therefore, if Steam has never successfully initiated the request, there may be no Steam switch to turn on manually.

That means the absence of Steam does not by itself prove that the iPhone camera is blocked or broken. It may indicate that Steam’s QR-scanning flow never reached the iOS permission prompt. See Apple’s camera permission guidance for the current iPhone settings behavior.
The main fix: trigger camera access through your Steam avatar
Use this sequence before reinstalling Steam or removing Steam Guard:
- Open Steam Mobile on your iPhone.
- Tap the profile or avatar area.
- Tap Edit Profile.
- Tap your current avatar or profile image.
- Choose Take a Photo, Take Picture, or another option that opens the camera.
- When iOS displays the camera-access alert, tap Allow.
- You do not necessarily need to save a new profile photo. The important part is that Steam successfully requests and receives camera access.
- Force-close Steam Mobile. On an iPhone without a Home button, swipe up from the bottom and dismiss Steam in the app switcher. On an iPhone with a Home button, double-click Home and swipe Steam away.
- Reopen Steam Mobile, open the Steam Guard tab, choose the QR-scanning option, and scan the code shown on another screen.
This avatar-camera method comes from user reports describing the same symptom: Steam failed to request camera access from the Steam Guard scanner but did request it from the profile-photo feature. Reports on the Apple Community and Steam Community describe the workaround and, in some cases, the need to relaunch the app afterward. Valve has not, in the cited support material, officially confirmed this specific bug or workaround.

Open:
Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera > Steam
Turn Steam on if it is disabled. Then force-close and reopen Steam Mobile before trying the QR scanner again.
If the switch is already on, try toggling it off and back on, restart the iPhone, and update Steam Mobile from the App Store. If Steam remains unable to open the scanner, use a non-QR sign-in method rather than repeatedly removing and re-adding the authenticator.
Check whether the iPhone camera works elsewhere
Before treating this as a Steam problem:
- Open Apple’s Camera app.
- Test both the front and rear cameras.
- Use the native Camera app to scan an ordinary QR code.
- Try camera access in another trusted app, such as Messages or a banking app.
If Apple’s Camera app also fails, the issue is probably device-level and not specific to Steam Mobile. If the native camera works normally while only Steam fails to request access, concentrate on Steam’s permission state and app flow.

Update Steam Mobile and iOS
Open the App Store, search for Steam Mobile, and install any available update. The listing identifies the app as published by Valve Corporation and, at the time of the referenced App Store information, lists iOS 15.1 or later as the requirement. Compatibility requirements and release notes can change.
The App Store release notes have also referenced changes to Steam QR-code sign-in behavior, including opening the Steam Guard scan page after using the iPhone Camera app on a Steam QR code. Updating is therefore worthwhile, although it is not a guaranteed repair for this permission-prompt symptom. Also install any available iOS update through Settings > General > Software Update.
If the camera opens but will not scan the QR code
Permission and QR recognition are separate problems. Once Steam can access the camera, try these checks:
- Generate a fresh Steam sign-in QR code; an old code may have expired.
- Increase the brightness of the screen displaying the code.
- Remove glare and avoid reflections.
- Move the phone slowly closer to or farther from the code until it focuses.
- Make sure the code is large enough and fully visible.
- Display the QR code on another device. The scanner cannot practically scan a code displayed on the same iPhone.
- Confirm that Steam Mobile is signed in to the expected Steam account.
- Use Steam Mobile’s scanner rather than Apple’s Camera app unless the current Steam flow explicitly hands off to Apple’s camera.
- Restart the iPhone and retry after updating Steam Mobile.
Valve documents QR sign-in through Steam Mobile, but these lighting, distance, display, and focus suggestions are ordinary troubleshooting possibilities rather than individually documented Valve causes.
Check Screen Time and device management
On a family-managed iPhone, inspect:
Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions

Check whether camera use, privacy changes, or related app permissions are restricted. Apple documents that Screen Time can restrict apps, features, and privacy-setting changes.

Work, school, and corporate iPhones may also be controlled by mobile-device-management policies. If a restriction is enforced, contact the parent, school, or organization administrator. Do not assume you are authorized to remove a managed restriction or reset the device’s privacy controls.
Reset iPhone privacy permissions as a last resort
If Steam still never requests access, Apple provides a broader permission reset at:
Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Location & Privacy

This resets privacy permissions so apps can ask again when they next need access. It affects other apps too, so you will need to approve permissions again. Apple explains the reset and its consequences in its privacy and location services guidance.
After the reset, reopen Steam and try the avatar-photo method before returning to Steam Guard. This is a permission-reset attempt, not a guaranteed fix for a defective app flow.

- Entering your account name and password, then approving the sign-in request in Steam Mobile.
- Entering the Steam Guard code displayed in the Steam Mobile app.
- Using an email-based Steam Guard code where email authentication is enabled.
See Valve’s Steam Guard and QR sign-in guidance and its information about email Steam Guard codes. A camera failure does not automatically make the authenticator or Steam account unusable.

The QR scanner used to approve a Steam website or desktop sign-in is not the same thing as initial authenticator enrollment. If setup is incomplete, you may not see every Steam Guard option.
Valve’s setup flow generally involves signing in to Steam Mobile, opening the Steam Guard tab, selecting Add authenticator, completing phone verification if requested, and saving the recovery code. Finish that setup before expecting all authenticator features to appear.
Do not uninstall Steam before checking recovery options
Reinstalling Steam may help with damaged app data or an unusual installation state, and some community reports describe setting up the app again as a workaround. It should not be your first step when Steam Guard protects the account.
Before deleting Steam Mobile or moving the authenticator, make sure you can sign in or have a reliable recovery route. Preserve the Steam Guard recovery code. Valve says that code is important for recovering the authenticator and account access. If you remove the app without the code, phone access, or another recovery method, you may make the sign-in problem harder to resolve.

Do not remove the authenticator casually if the old iPhone is the only device that can approve sign-ins. Use Steam’s recovery process, the saved recovery code, or phone-number recovery if available.
If you have neither the old phone nor the recovery code, follow Valve’s mobile-authenticator recovery guidance. You may need to contact Steam Support.
When to contact Steam Support
Escalate to Valve if:
- The iPhone camera fails in every app.
- Steam Mobile crashes repeatedly after updating or restarting.
- The authenticator was removed, lost, or transferred unsuccessfully.
- You have neither the recovery code nor access to the old phone.
- You cannot access the Steam account through QR, approval, in-app-code, or email-code methods.
When contacting support, describe whether Apple’s Camera app works, whether Steam appears under Camera permissions, whether the avatar-photo method produced a prompt, and whether you still have the recovery code. Do not send your password or recovery code to anyone claiming to provide unofficial support.
