What the FormatException means
FormatException: An invalid IP address was specified is a server-configuration or networking failure, not a gameplay error. The dedicated server is trying to parse the value assigned to ServerIP and cannot use it as an address. Common examples include a tutorial placeholder that was never replaced, a typo, an empty value, or an address copied into the wrong server configuration.

A Steam Community dedicated-server guide describes the same situation: the administrator had not replaced the example address in the configuration file. The guide was published in 2013, so its menu names and property list may not match every current build, but its distinction between loopback, private, and external addresses remains useful. You can read it at Steam’s dedicated-server guide.
There is a second, different failure mode. A hosting-provider knowledgebase says that in post-A18 versions the game port can remain locked after a restart. In that case, the address may already be valid, yet the server still fails until the old process or port reservation is cleared. Its recommended recovery is to stop the server, wait five minutes, and start it again. See the provider troubleshooting note.

Choose the right address for the connection you are testing
The correct value depends on where the connecting player is located and what the server build expects as its bind address. Do not choose an address merely because it is visible in Windows or in your router; choose it for the connection path you are troubleshooting.
| Address or value | Use it when | Do not use it for | Reachability |
|---|---|---|---|
127.0.0.1 |
You are testing a server connection from the same computer. | Friends connecting from another computer or network. | Loopback only; it never routes across your LAN or the internet. |
localhost |
The server build accepts the hostname and you are testing locally. | Remote-player connection details. | Resolves to the local machine, not to a public address. |
192.168.x.x or another private LAN address |
A client is on the same local network and the server is configured for LAN access. | Players joining from outside your router. | Internal address; it is not the public address friends use over the internet. |
| Externally reachable address | Players outside the LAN must reach the host through the router or hosting provider. | A local-only test when the server is bound only to loopback. | Requires correct NAT or port forwarding and firewall rules. |
The Steam guide specifically warns that a 192.168.x.x address is internal rather than external and says local self-connections can use 127.0.0.1 or localhost. Treat those statements as connection-scope guidance, not as a guarantee that every October 2026 server build accepts every spelling or bind behavior. Verify the property names supplied with your server distribution or control panel.
Step-by-step recovery
1. Stop every server process
Use the server panel or operating-system process controls to stop all 7 Days to Die dedicated-server instances. Do not edit the file while an old instance is still running. A second process can keep the game port occupied and can also overwrite your edit when it shuts down.
- Stop the instance shown in your hosting panel.
- Check for another manually launched or automatically restarted instance.
- Confirm that the server process has exited before continuing.
2. Open the active serverconfig.xml
Dedicated-server installations can contain more than one configuration file. Open the file referenced by the launch command, startup script, or hosting panel—not simply the first file named serverconfig.xml that you find. If you correct an unused copy, the error will not change.
Search for the ServerIP setting. Remove tutorial text such as yourexternalip_not_127.0.0.1 and replace it with a real address or with the value required by that server build. The placeholder is not an address that the server can parse. Check for accidental spaces, quotation marks in the value, incomplete octets, or other characters copied from explanatory text.
3. Select a test address
If you are checking the installation on the host computer, set the value expected by the build and test with 127.0.0.1 or localhost as appropriate. This isolates the server from router and internet variables.

If friends on another network must join, configure the server for the host’s externally reachable address or for the bind value specified by the hosting provider. Give remote players that reachable address, never the host’s private 192.168.x.x address. A private address can still be useful to a player on the same LAN, but it cannot by itself route through the public internet.
4. Check NAT, forwarding, and firewall rules
A valid address does not automatically make a server reachable. The router must forward the game port to the machine running the server, and the host firewall must permit the server traffic. Confirm that the forwarding target is still the correct machine and that a recent DHCP change has not assigned it a different private address.
The Steam guide includes a DisableNAT setting and discusses port forwarding. Because that guide is historical, treat the property name and its exact behavior as build-specific: confirm that your current server version exposes the setting before changing it. If external connections fail while local connections work, investigate forwarding and firewall rules before changing the IP value again.
5. Allow the game port to reset
After saving the configuration, keep the server stopped for approximately five minutes, then start it once. The PingPerfect knowledgebase attributes some post-A18 occurrences to a game port that remains locked after restart and prescribes this delay. The five-minute period is a recovery step from that provider’s guidance, not a measured guarantee for every platform or wrapper.
6. Escalate a persistent failure
If ServerIP is a valid value, every old process is stopped, and the server still throws the exception after the waiting period, ask the hosting provider to perform a provider-side “stop server” action or reset. This is particularly important on managed servers where you cannot see or terminate the process that owns the port.
Why the error may appear after restarting
A restart can expose either of two problems at once. First, the server may be reading a different configuration path on startup, so an untouched template or placeholder becomes active even though you edited another file. Second, the previous process may not have released the game port cleanly. The provider guidance identifies this stale-port condition in post-A18 versions.

Use the timing as a diagnostic clue:
- Failure on the first-ever launch: inspect
ServerIPfor a placeholder, malformed value, or wrong configuration file. - Local connection works but remote players fail: keep the local address for local testing, then check the external address, NAT, forwarding, and firewall path.
- The same valid configuration fails only after a restart: stop all instances, wait about five minutes, and retry once.
- The error returns after a clean stop and delay: request a provider-side stop or reset and ask which configuration file and bind address the panel is using.
Common mistakes and their fixes
Leaving the tutorial placeholder in place
Strings such as yourexternalip_not_127.0.0.1 are instructions, not usable addresses. Replace them before the server starts. If you copied a complete example block, inspect every address-related property rather than assuming only the visible line matters.
Giving remote players the private address
An address beginning with 192.168. identifies a private network. It can identify the server to another device on that same LAN, but an internet player cannot route to it directly. Supply the host’s externally reachable address and configure the router’s forwarding rule to send the game traffic to the server machine.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Using a public address for a local-only test
Testing through the public address from inside the same network can involve router hairpin-NAT behavior. First prove that the server itself works with 127.0.0.1 or localhost. Then test from a second LAN device if needed, and finally test from an outside network. This order separates a parsing problem from a NAT problem.
Editing the wrong copy of the XML file
Multiple server instances, Steam installations, wrappers, and control panels can each point to different configuration paths. The active launch command is the authority. Record the path it uses, make the edit there, and restart only that instance.
Changing several networking settings at once
Change one category at a time: first the address syntax, then the connection scope, then forwarding and firewall rules. Otherwise, a successful restart will not tell you which change fixed the problem, and a new failure will be harder to isolate.
A practical diagnosis matrix
| Observed result | Most likely area | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| The server refuses to start with the FormatException immediately. | Invalid or placeholder ServerIP, or the wrong XML file is active. |
Stop all instances, locate the launch-command configuration, and replace the value with an address accepted by the build. |
| The server starts and the host can connect, but outside players cannot. | Address scope, NAT, port forwarding, or firewall. | Give outside players the external address and verify forwarding to the server’s current private address. |
| The problem appears only following a restart. | Stale process or locked game port. | Perform a clean stop, wait about five minutes, and start once. |
| The problem continues with a valid address and no local process. | Provider-managed process, port, or wrapper state. | Ask the host to perform a “stop server” action or reset and confirm the active configuration path. |
Compare the available remedies
Choosing the next step is easier when you separate four questions: what network scope you need, who controls the setting, how quickly the remedy can be tested, and whether the failure is likely to recur.

| Remedy | Address scope | Who controls it | Best use | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Correct ServerIP |
Any supported bind address | Server owner or panel user | Immediate startup failure caused by a placeholder or malformed value | Does not open router ports or clear a process held by the provider |
| Local loopback test | One computer | Server owner | Proving that the installation can start and accept a local connection | Cannot demonstrate internet reachability |
| LAN/private-address test | Same local network | Owner plus router/firewall administrator | Checking a second device on the home network | Private addresses cannot be given to internet players |
| External-address and forwarding check | Internet | Owner, router administrator, or host | Allowing friends outside the LAN to join | Depends on NAT, forwarding, firewall rules, and the host’s current address |
| Five-minute stop and provider reset | Independent of address scope | Owner first, provider if necessary | Failures that begin after restart or return with a valid configuration | Takes time and may require support intervention |
Requirements to verify before escalating
Have these details ready when contacting a host or diagnosing a second server instance:
- The exact error text and whether it appears during startup or when a player connects.
- The path to the
serverconfig.xmlnamed by the launch command, script, or panel. - The current
ServerIPvalue, with tutorial text removed. - Whether
127.0.0.1,localhost, a LAN client, or an outside client succeeds. - Whether the issue began immediately after a restart and whether the server was left stopped for five minutes.
- Whether the router forwards the game port to the machine’s current private address and whether the firewall allows the traffic.
This record prevents a provider from resetting the wrong instance and helps distinguish a parsing error from a reachability or port-ownership problem.
When managed hosting is the practical option
Self-hosting requires control of the router, firewall, server process, and active configuration path. A managed 7 Days to Die host can be a reasonable escalation when you cannot change NAT rules, the panel repeatedly starts an old process, or port-reset failures return after otherwise clean restarts. The trade-off is less direct control and a hosting charge, so compare the provider’s current plan price, supported regions, restart controls, and support process before moving a world.
StreamNeo is one possible example to investigate, but availability, regions, pricing, and affiliate terms can change. Treat any offer as conditional: confirm that its current service supports the game version and configuration access you need rather than assuming that hosting alone fixes an invalid address.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOptional Windows diagnostic software
After the direct configuration, process, NAT, and firewall checks, a general Windows network or driver diagnostic utility may help identify a broader connectivity problem. It is not evidence of a specific fix for this FormatException. Do not treat Outbyte or a similar utility as a guaranteed solution, and verify its current product scope and program terms before recommending or purchasing it.
Version and evidence limits
The address advice comes from a Steam Community dedicated-server guide dated December 16, 2013, while the port-reset advice comes from a hosting-provider article referring to post-A18 versions. A Steam support report associated with this issue is dated October 17, 2021. These sources do not establish identical behavior for every October 2026 game build, operating system, hosting wrapper, or platform.
Accordingly, confirm the current server distribution’s property names, startup arguments, and networking requirements before changing settings such as DisableNAT. The reliable sequence is still to eliminate malformed configuration values first, prove local operation, then solve external reachability and finally investigate a stale port or provider-side process.

Final checklist
- All 7 Days to Die server processes are stopped.
- You edited the
serverconfig.xmlused by the actual launch command. ServerIPcontains a valid value, not tutorial text such asyourexternalip_not_127.0.0.1.- You used
127.0.0.1orlocalhostonly for a local self-connection test. - You did not give remote players a private
192.168.x.xaddress. - Router forwarding and firewall rules point to the current server machine.
- The server remained stopped for about five minutes after a restart-related failure.
- Your host has performed a stop/reset if the valid configuration still fails.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which IP address belongs in serverconfig.xml?
Use the real address or bind value required by your current server build. For a same-computer test, use 127.0.0.1 or localhost when supported. Remote players need the host’s externally reachable address; do not give them a private 192.168.x.x address.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteCan I use 192.168.x.x for friends?
Only friends on the same local network can normally use that private address. Players on the internet need the external address, plus working NAT or port forwarding and firewall permission.
Why did the error start after I restarted the server?
The restart may have activated a different configuration file, or the previous process may have left the game port locked. Stop every instance, verify the active launch path and ServerIP, wait about five minutes, and start once.
Is 127.0.0.1 the same as my public IP?
No. 127.0.0.1 is loopback and reaches only the computer running the server. It is useful for a local self-connection test, not for players joining from another computer or network.
What should I do if local connections work but internet connections fail?
Leave the local test address in place if it is appropriate for the build, then check the externally reachable address, router forwarding, NAT behavior, and firewall rules. A valid ServerIP alone does not make the server reachable.
Recommended Free Tools
How long should I leave the server stopped?
PingPerfect’s guidance for post-A18 port-lock cases says to stop the server for five minutes before starting it again. Treat that as a recovery interval, not a guarantee for every build or hosting wrapper.
What if the address is valid and the error still returns?
Confirm that no local process remains, then ask the hosting provider to perform a provider-side “stop server” action or reset. Also ask which configuration path and bind address the panel is actually using.
Should I change DisableNAT?
Only if your current server distribution documents that property and its behavior. The older Steam guide mentions it, but names and settings can differ between versions. Check the current server files or control panel first.
The Bottom Line
Correct the active serverconfig.xml first, remove any placeholder from ServerIP, and prove the server locally with 127.0.0.1 or localhost. For outside players, use the externally reachable address and verify NAT, forwarding, and firewall rules. If a valid setup fails after a restart, stop every instance, wait about five minutes for the port to clear, and request a provider-side reset when the problem persists.
