If Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 lags only in multiplayer, first determine whether you are seeing network lag, PC performance stutter, or a problem with a particular session. Rubber-banding, delayed hits, teleporting players and disconnects usually point to the connection; low FPS and frame-time spikes point to the PC. Use the least disruptive checks first, then test your network before changing router settings or contacting support.
Identify what kind of lag you have
“Lag” and “stuttering” are not interchangeable. A network problem delays information between your PC and the game session. A performance problem makes your own PC render frames slowly or inconsistently, even when the connection is healthy.

Try these quick fixes first
- Exit the game and restart Windows.
- Power-cycle the modem and router. Focus’s network guide recommends shutting down the PC, turning off and unplugging the modem and router, waiting one minute, reconnecting them, waiting for service to return, then restarting the PC.
- Use Ethernet temporarily if you normally play over Wi-Fi. If wired play is stable, wireless interference, signal quality or local congestion is more likely than a problem with the game executable.
- Pause Steam, Epic Games Store, Windows, cloud-storage and torrent downloads. Stop streaming, game streaming and remote-desktop sessions on the network while testing.
- Try a different public session or leave and rejoin the current one. If only one session behaves badly, the issue may be session-specific.
A faster download plan is not automatically the answer. Multiplayer stability depends heavily on latency, jitter, packet loss, routing and NAT—not just download speed.

Flush DNS
Saber recommends flushing Windows’ DNS cache as part of its connection troubleshooting:

- Open Command Prompt (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin).
- Run
ipconfig /flushdns. - Restart the game and test again.
This may clear stale name-resolution data, but it will not by itself fix packet loss or lower ping to every game service.
Check Windows date and time
Open Settings → Time & Language → Date & time. Enable automatic time and, where appropriate, automatic time zone. An incorrect clock can interfere with authentication and online services, although it is not a typical cause of ordinary in-match latency.
Check firewall permissions
Do not permanently disable Windows Firewall. If firewall rules appear damaged, Focus’s guide lists a restoration procedure: open Settings → Update & Security → Windows Security → Firewall & network protection, choose Restore firewalls to default, then launch the game and allow it through the firewall when Windows prompts you. Windows 11 may use different wording or navigation.
Check NAT and double NAT
NAT controls how devices on your home network communicate with online services. A strict NAT setup can interfere with matchmaking, voice chat or session connections. Check whether your ISP gateway and personal router are both routing traffic; this “double NAT” arrangement can create problems. Using a single router, or placing a secondary router in the appropriate bridge or access-point mode, may help.

Saber describes NAT Types 1 and 2 as preferable to Type 3. PCs do not always show these console-style labels, so focus on the practical symptoms: failed matchmaking, voice-chat problems and repeated connection errors.
Try UPnP before manual port forwarding
UPnP can allow the router to create the required mappings automatically. If it is disabled or unreliable, manual forwarding may be worth testing—but only after the simpler checks fail.
Saber lists these ports for Space Marine 2:
TCP: 11700–11720
UDP: 48800–55000If you use them, configure the rules in both the router and Windows firewall as appropriate. Reserve a stable local IP address for the PC first, otherwise the router rule may later point to the wrong device. Router menus vary by manufacturer.

Fix FPS drops and stutter that feel like network lag
If offline missions also stutter, lowering graphics settings changes the symptom, or your GPU, CPU, VRAM or RAM is saturated, treat the problem as local performance trouble rather than high ping.
Verify local files
On Steam, Focus’s support page lists this path:
- Open Steam → Library.
- Right-click Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Relaunch the game when the process finishes.
In the Epic Games Store, open the game’s management page and use Manage → Verify. Launcher labels can change. Verification can repair incomplete or corrupted local files, but it cannot repair ISP routing, packet loss, overloaded servers or inadequate hardware.
Update Windows and graphics drivers
Restart Windows, install pending Windows updates, and update your NVIDIA or AMD graphics driver. If a normal update does not help, a clean driver installation may be worth trying. These steps primarily address rendering and stability, not high ping.

Isolate overlays and background utilities
Saber’s PC guidance recommends closing third-party background software. Test-disable overlays and utilities such as Discord overlay, MSI Afterburner, Skype, Corsair iCUE, Razer Synapse, third-party antivirus and tuning tools. Disable one category at a time where possible so you can identify a conflict instead of changing everything at once.

Also test with one monitor, disconnect unnecessary USB devices and controllers during launch troubleshooting, and ensure the game uses the dedicated GPU. On a laptop, prefer Windows Graphics settings or the NVIDIA/AMD per-application profile. Disabling the integrated GPU in Device Manager can disrupt display routing on some hybrid laptops and should not be a routine recommendation.
Saber also lists running the game as administrator and testing High process priority. These are optional performance experiments, not established network fixes or guaranteed solutions.
Adjust graphics only for performance stutter
Monitor FPS and frame time while the problem occurs. If frame-time spikes coincide with the hitch, test lower GPU-heavy settings, reduce background load and check temperatures. Lowering graphics settings can improve rendering performance; it cannot lower network latency.
Steam and Epic-specific notes
Steam Input is separate from network lag. Focus’s Steam support page lists Properties → Controller → Disable Steam Input for input-detection problems. Use it only when controller or input behavior is the issue, not as a general multiplayer-lag fix.

For both Steam and Epic, verify the installation through the relevant launcher before considering a full reinstall. Reinstalling the game is a last local-data step; reinstalling Windows is excessive for an ordinary multiplayer-lag report.
Find out whether your ISP or the game session is at fault
- Likely local PC problem: offline missions stutter, FPS falls while ping appears normal, hardware usage is maxed out, or graphics changes affect the symptom.
- Likely home-network or ISP problem: other online games show packet loss, Ethernet or a hotspot improves the issue, household uploads make it worse, or trouble is concentrated at busy times.
- Likely session or game-side problem: several squad members freeze together, the problem appears only in public matchmaking, multiple networks reproduce it, or changing the session changes the behavior.
Check the official announcement archive for current updates, but do not assume a patch fixed every form of multiplayer lag. The archive lists Patch 14.0 on July 28, 2026, following Hotfix 13.2 on June 9, 2026. The reviewed notes include crash and host-migration fixes, not a blanket claim that all PC latency problems were eliminated.
Use a mobile hotspot as a controlled test
When normal troubleshooting does not identify the cause, Saber recommends testing one short multiplayer session through a phone’s mobile hotspot:
- Enable the phone’s hotspot.
- Connect the PC to it.
- Play one short session.
- Compare the result with your normal home connection.
If the game is stable on the hotspot, your home router, ISP or usual route becomes more suspicious. That does not prove the game servers are healthy. If the hotspot also fails, it does not prove the game is at fault because mobile networks can be congested or poorly routed. Hotspots may also have high latency, data limits and unstable radio coverage, so use this as a diagnosis rather than a permanent gaming connection.
When to contact support
Submit a report through Focus’s official issue-reporting route when the problem persists across restarts, file verification and connection comparisons. Include:
- Steam or Epic Games Store, Windows version and game version
- Exact symptoms and any error code
- Whether the issue occurs offline, in private sessions and in public matchmaking
- Whether teammates see the same freeze
- Wi-Fi or Ethernet, NAT/router setup and whether a hotspot changed the result
- GPU, CPU, RAM and driver versions for performance symptoms
- Approximate time, frequency and reproducible steps
Report the behavior rather than claiming a cause you cannot verify. Avoid assuming that a particular patch caused the issue unless the official notes or a developer statement explicitly says so.
