If WordPress prints a server IP address instead of your domain, fix the problem in layers: make DNS and the web server deliver the right site, set both WordPress URL fields to the public domain, remove any locked URL overrides in wp-config.php, replace old IP links stored in content, and correct reverse-proxy HTTPS headers. A single setting change will not repair stale links or a misrouted virtual host.

Why WordPress uses an IP address
WordPress builds links from the host, scheme, and URL values it receives. An IP can therefore appear for several different reasons, and each requires a different repair.

- DNS or virtual-host routing is wrong: the domain points to another server, or the web server sends the request to its default site. WordPress may be perfectly configured while the request is reaching the wrong installation.
- The two WordPress URL settings contain the IP: the values in Settings > General control the canonical address WordPress uses for home links, redirects, feeds, and many generated URLs.
wp-config.phpoverrides the database:WP_HOMEorWP_SITEURLcan force an address and make the dashboard fields appear locked.- Old IP links remain in content: widgets, menus, posts, page-builder data, theme options, images, feeds, and migration leftovers can retain an earlier address even after the main settings are correct.
- A reverse proxy supplies the wrong host or scheme: a proxy or load balancer can replace the public hostname with an internal one, or hide the original HTTPS connection. WordPress then generates IP links or redirects between HTTP and HTTPS.
The common “homepage is correct, internal pages use the IP” pattern usually means a mixture of correct current settings and old absolute links. A homepage generated from the current site URL can look fine while a menu item, widget, image, or canonical tag still contains the former IP.
Do these checks before changing WordPress
Record the intended public address, including its scheme, before editing anything. For example, decide whether visitors should use https://example.com or https://www.example.com; do not switch between both during troubleshooting.

- Make a complete database and file backup. Direct URL replacement can affect thousands of values, and serialized data can be corrupted by a naïve text edit.
- Write down the current values of WordPress Address (URL), Site Address (URL),
WP_HOME, andWP_SITEURLif present. - Note whether WordPress files live in the document root or in a directory such as
/wordpress. This determines whether the two URL fields should differ. - Keep an administrator session available, but plan to test in a private browser window after each change so cached redirects do not hide the result.
Layer 1: verify DNS and the web server host
Start outside WordPress. A browser request must reach the intended server and the intended site before application settings can matter.
1. Check the domain records
- Inspect the domain’s
Arecord and every publishedAAAArecord. They must point to the server that hosts this WordPress installation. - If an old IPv4 or IPv6 record remains, some visitors can still be sent to the previous machine. Remove or correct records only after confirming which addresses are active.
- Allow for DNS caching after a change. Test from more than one network rather than assuming one resolver’s answer represents everyone.
2. Test by domain, not only by IP
Open the site using the complete domain and the intended HTTPS scheme. Loading the numeric IP directly does not prove that the domain is mapped correctly: web servers select a site by the requested Host name, and an IP request can select the default virtual host instead.

In the hosting control panel or web-server configuration, verify that the site definition lists the exact domain and any intended alternate hostname. The document root must be the directory containing this WordPress installation. If the IP displays a different site, a welcome page, or another customer’s content, the request is reaching a default host or the domain is attached to the wrong account; changing WordPress URLs will not fix that routing error.

Layer 2: set both WordPress URL fields
When DNS and host routing are correct, go to Settings > General. Set:
- WordPress Address (URL): the address where the WordPress core files are installed.
- Site Address (URL): the public address visitors type to reach the site.
For a normal installation in the web root, both values are usually identical, such as https://example.com. Use the intended https:// scheme, the final preferred hostname, and no trailing slash. WordPress documentation describes the Site Address as the address people type in their browser and notes that it is identical to the WordPress Address unless WordPress is installed in its own directory.

When the values should differ
If core files are in a subdirectory but the public site is at the domain root, the values can legitimately differ. For example, WordPress Address may be https://example.com/wordpress while Site Address is https://example.com. Do not remove that directory from WordPress Address merely because visitors do not see it. Conversely, do not add a directory that is not part of the actual installation path.

- Replace the IP in both fields with the correct domain and scheme.
- Save the changes once. WordPress may sign you out because its canonical address has changed.
- Open a private window and visit the homepage, an ordinary post, and the login URL over HTTPS.
- If the fields save but links still contain the IP, do not keep toggling them; proceed to the stale-data and proxy layers.
Layer 3: unlock URL fields controlled by wp-config.php
If either field is greyed out, immediately reverts, or does not appear editable, inspect wp-config.php. Look for definitions similar to:
define( 'WP_HOME', 'https://example.com' );
define( 'WP_SITEURL', 'https://example.com' );WP_HOME overrides the database’s home value, and WP_SITEURL overrides the database’s siteurl value. These constants are evaluated before the dashboard values, so editing the form alone cannot win while an override remains.
Safe correction procedure
- Download a copy of
wp-config.phpand make a separate backup of the database. - Check for both constants, including variations added by a deployment script or hosting panel.
- Change the values to the final public domain, using the same scheme and hostname you selected for the dashboard.
- Alternatively, remove the constants only when you deliberately want the database values to control the site. Do not leave one constant pointing to an IP and the other pointing to a domain.
- Save the file, clear caches, and revisit Settings > General to confirm that the effective values are consistent.
Do not add a second definition elsewhere in the file. Duplicate or conflicting constants can produce confusing results and PHP warnings.
Layer 4: replace old IP URLs safely
Correct URL settings affect URLs WordPress generates now; they do not rewrite text that was previously saved with an absolute IP. Search for the old address when only selected elements are wrong.

Where stale addresses commonly remain
- Custom menu items and navigation blocks
- Text, HTML, and image widgets
- Post and page content, reusable blocks, and page-builder fields
- Theme options, header logos, background images, and custom CSS
- Featured images, attachment metadata, and media inserted before the domain was configured
- XML feeds, sitemaps, canonical fields, and SEO-plugin settings
- Import, staging, or migration records in the options and post-meta tables
Use a serialized-data-aware replacement
Back up first, then use a migration or search-and-replace utility that understands serialized PHP data. A raw SQL replacement can change string lengths without updating serialization metadata, breaking widgets, settings, or other records. Search for the complete old URL, including its scheme, and replace it with the complete final URL. Review the tool’s dry-run or preview output before committing.
The home and siteurl values are stored in the options table, but changing those two rows does not repair links elsewhere. Treat a single-value correction and a full content replacement as separate operations.
When a manual edit is appropriate
A small number of clearly identified menu or widget links can be edited in their normal WordPress screens. This is safer than broad database work when the affected values are visible and few. Do not manually edit opaque serialized blobs unless you know the format and have a tested rollback.
Layer 5: correct reverse-proxy and HTTPS information
A reverse proxy, CDN, load balancer, or TLS terminator can hide the public request details from WordPress. The proxy may send an internal hostname in HTTP_HOST, even though the visitor requested the public domain. WordPress’s reverse-proxy guidance says to map the correct forwarded host into the host value used by the application.
Preserve the public host
- Configure the proxy to pass the visitor’s domain in the host header that reaches WordPress, rather than an origin name or private IP.
- Ensure the origin virtual host accepts that domain. A correct forwarded header cannot help if the web server rejects or misroutes it.
- Keep one canonical hostname. If both bare and
wwwnames are accepted, choose one and redirect the other consistently.
Preserve HTTPS when TLS ends at the proxy
If the visitor uses HTTPS but the proxy connects to the origin over HTTP, WordPress must still receive reliable forwarded HTTPS information. Otherwise it can generate HTTP links, redirect HTTPS requests back to HTTP, or create an endless redirect loop. Follow the proxy and WordPress HTTPS configuration together; do not solve a loop by randomly changing the two URL fields.

Recognize a proxy-specific failure
If direct origin access works but the public domain produces an IP, an internal hostname, or a scheme loop, compare the host and HTTPS headers at the proxy and origin. The durable fix belongs in the proxy/server configuration, not in a database-wide replacement that could hide the underlying routing problem.
Retest the complete site after each change
Use a private browser window after clearing page, object, CDN, and browser caches. Test the public domain over HTTPS, not the origin IP.
- Homepage and at least one post and one page
- Administrator login, logout, and dashboard navigation
- Images, stylesheets, scripts, and downloadable media
- Internal menus, search results, and pagination
- Canonical links, XML feeds, and sitemaps
- HTTP-to-HTTPS and alternate-host redirects
- Comments or forms that submit back to the site
Use the Site Health screen as a final reference for the reported Home URL, Site URL, and permalink information. If one test still exposes the IP, identify whether the value is generated dynamically, stored in content, or introduced by the proxy before making another change.

Troubleshoot by the symptom you see
The homepage is correct, but internal pages use the IP
Inspect menus, widgets, post content, and theme or page-builder settings for absolute IP links. A correct homepage does not prove that every stored URL was migrated. Run a serialized-data-aware search for the old complete URL, then retest media and canonical tags as well as visible links.
Every page redirects to the IP
Check the effective Home and Site Address values, including WP_HOME and WP_SITEURL. If they are correct, inspect the server’s canonical redirect rules and any proxy host header. A redirect generated before WordPress runs points to hosting configuration; a redirect generated by WordPress points to its effective URL or trusted proxy information.

Only images or downloads use the IP
Search media URLs in posts, attachment metadata, theme options, and widgets. Replace stored absolute URLs safely, then purge caches that may still serve old HTML.
The dashboard fields are locked
Find the URL constants in wp-config.php. Change or remove the conflicting definitions, never just the visible database values.
HTTPS loops after the change
Confirm that the proxy forwards the original HTTPS state and that the origin web server and WordPress agree on the canonical scheme. Correct the header mapping and redirect chain before attempting another URL replacement.

Prevent the IP from returning
- Use the final domain and HTTPS scheme before importing content or enabling caches.
- Keep DNS records, the virtual host, proxy host forwarding, and WordPress URL values aligned.
- When cloning a site, run a serialized-data-aware URL replacement as part of the deployment rather than editing visible pages one by one.
- Do not use the origin IP for routine browsing, preview links, or administrator bookmarks; those requests can select a default host and create misleading tests.
- After certificate, proxy, or hostname changes, clear all relevant caches and check a post, media file, feed, sitemap, login, and redirect chain.
The durable canonical setup is one public HTTPS domain routed by DNS to the intended virtual host, with both WordPress URL settings (or deliberate configuration constants) matching that address, old IP values removed from stored content, and proxy headers preserving the public host and HTTPS state.
