What the error means—and what it does not tell you
The message means Minecraft could not complete the Microsoft services authentication needed for the attempted online feature. Similar reports describe both Realm access and multiplayer/server access, so the wording alone cannot tell you whether the cause is an account session, device setting, connection, or service disruption.

Because the example tied to this title concerns mobile, do not apply Windows-only menus or cache instructions to a phone or tablet. The steps below are ordered from simple, reversible checks to platform-specific troubleshooting.
Try these checks in order
- Confirm your connection. Verify that the device can reach the internet, then retry the server or Realm. If possible, check whether other online features work. This helps separate a general connection problem from a Minecraft sign-in issue.
- Check current service status. Look for a current Minecraft or Xbox service disruption before changing account settings. A Microsoft Q&A response noted an outage around a similar complaint in 2021, but that historical incident is not evidence of a present outage. See the related Microsoft Q&A discussion.
- Verify the device date and time. Set the clock to update automatically and synchronize it, then reopen Minecraft. In a 2025 Microsoft Q&A thread, users reported that correcting an inaccurate PC date and time helped them; this is anecdotal and does not establish the cause for every PC or mobile device. - Refresh Minecraft’s Microsoft account session. In Minecraft, sign out of the Microsoft account, close and reopen the game, and sign in again. This low-impact account refresh is suggested in related support discussions, but it is not a guaranteed fix. Related Microsoft Q&A advice.
Windows: refresh Xbox and Microsoft Store sign-in
If you play on Windows and the checks above do not help, a community response on Microsoft Q&A recommends refreshing the connected app sessions as well as the Minecraft session:

- Restart the PC.
- Sign back in to both apps with the account you use for Minecraft.
- Launch Minecraft from the Xbox app and test the server or Realm again.

Avoid jumping straight to reinstalling, deleting credentials, or changing router settings. Similar users reported that reinstalling did not resolve their issue, and the available reports do not establish those actions as reliable fixes. Windows-specific cache deletion or app reset advice is more disruptive and was not confirmed to solve the reported case; consider it only after simpler checks and platform-specific support guidance.
