If your YouTube live stream buffers or drops frames because your encoder is sending data faster than your connection can upload it, lower the stream’s total bitrate until it fits within your stable upload capacity—with headroom left over. YouTube recommends keeping 20% of available upload bandwidth in reserve. Test upload speed under realistic network conditions, adjust bitrate and, if necessary, resolution or frame rate, then verify the result in YouTube Live Control Room.
Why an encoder bitrate that is too high causes stream trouble
Your encoder must send the live video and audio to YouTube continuously. If their total bitrate exceeds the upload capacity actually available to the encoder, data can arrive late or fail to arrive, causing buffering, dropped frames, or a disrupted stream. Download speed is not the figure to compare: a fast download connection does not establish that its upload capacity is sufficient. YouTube advises that the total stream bitrate stay within available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. YouTube’s streaming tips
Advertised or speed-test upload rates are not guaranteed capacity for your stream at every moment. Other people and devices using the same connection can consume upload bandwidth, and connectivity interruptions can break a stream. The useful target is therefore a bitrate your connection can sustain under representative conditions, not a bitrate that merely matches a best-case test result.
Check upload capacity and calculate a safe stream bitrate
Measure upstream performance under realistic conditions
- Run an internet speed test and record the upload result. Do not use the download result to size the stream.
- Repeat the test when practical while the household or workplace network is under the kind of load expected during the broadcast. Other active users or devices may leave less bandwidth for the encoder.
- Use the stable upload capacity as your budget, not a brief peak. Leave YouTube’s recommended 20% reserve for variation and competing traffic.
For example, if a connection reliably provides 10 Mbps of upload capacity in the conditions where you will stream, reserve about 2 Mbps as headroom; target a total stream bitrate no higher than about 8 Mbps. This is an illustration of YouTube’s 20% guidance, not a guarantee that a particular line will remain stable.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Compare total bitrate, not only the video setting
Use the encoder’s outgoing total stream bitrate when checking against upload capacity. The stream includes audio as well as video, so the video bitrate alone is not the full amount being sent. Leave enough margin for normal fluctuations and other network use.
Choose a bitrate, resolution, and frame rate your connection can sustain
YouTube’s live encoder table gives recommended H.264, AV1, and H.265 bitrates by resolution and frame rate. These are encoder-setting recommendations, not proof that a connection with the same advertised upload speed will be stable. The values below are the recommendations listed in YouTube’s current live-stream guidance; check the live table because platform settings can change. YouTube live encoder settings

Choose a setting combination that fits your upload budget with headroom. If the recommended bitrate for your desired resolution and frame rate is more than your connection can sustain, lower the bitrate and consider reducing resolution or frame rate. YouTube specifically advises lowering resolution when bandwidth is insufficient for the chosen resolution. Select the bitrate from its live-stream table for the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate; do not substitute YouTube’s video-upload or VOD bitrate table.
Apply the fix and verify it before going live
- Lower the encoder bitrate. Set the total outgoing rate below stable available upload capacity, leaving YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- Reduce picture demands if needed. If the sustainable bitrate does not suit the current image size or motion, step down resolution or frame rate, then consult YouTube’s live encoder table for the combination you choose.
- Check stream encoding settings. YouTube recommends CBR bitrate encoding, RTMP or RTMPS delivery, and a two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds. If YouTube reports a keyframe issue, verify the interval in your encoder. YouTube encoder settings
- Run a representative test stream. Test with audio and movement similar to the actual broadcast. A static screen or quiet test may not reflect the demands of gameplay or other fast-moving content.
- Monitor YouTube stream health. During the test and event, check the Live Control Room health indicator and read timestamped error messages. Use the errors to determine whether the remaining problem is bandwidth, encoding settings, or another connection issue. YouTube live-stream errors
Diagnose dropped frames in OBS
In OBS, network-dropped frames point to an unstable connection or a connection that cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Check the OBS dropped-frame counter while streaming and compare your configured bitrate with stable upload capacity. OBS’s official troubleshooting guide, dated September 30, 2024, describes dynamic bitrate as a fallback that can lower bitrate during congestion; OBS cautions that it does not fix the underlying connection problem and reduces video quality. - If the configured bitrate exceeds the safe upload budget, reduce it and retest; dynamic bitrate is not a substitute for a sustainable setting.
- If the bitrate is already within budget but frames still drop, investigate instability along the connection path and check OBS’s troubleshooting guidance.
- If the line’s stable upstream capacity remains inadequate for the quality you need, contact your ISP about available upload capacity or a line fault. A local network device cannot increase the upstream capacity supplied by the ISP.
Buffering viewers and encoder upload problems are different
Encoder-side dropped frames mean the outgoing stream is not reaching YouTube reliably. Viewer playback buffering can have other causes. YouTube notes that lower latency may mean more playback buffering; changing latency does not create extra upload capacity for your encoder. YouTube live-stream settings
