Use FFmpeg in two separate stages: batch-encode your recordings offline, then play the finished files to YouTube Live in real time. For a broadly compatible H.264 stream, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps at 1080p30 or 8 Mbps at 720p30, with CBR and a two-second keyframe interval. Those are ingest targets, not a guarantee that your internet connection can sustain the stream.

What you need before encoding

  • An Ubuntu computer with FFmpeg installed. The package version and installation method depend on your Ubuntu release; check the package available for your release rather than assuming one command or version applies to all Ubuntu systems. Ubuntu’s FFmpeg manpage is one release-specific reference.
  • Source videos and enough free disk space for a separate output directory. Keep your originals unchanged until you have checked the encodes.
  • A YouTube channel eligible to stream using an encoder, plus the current ingest address and stream name from the live-stream setup.
  • An upload connection at the broadcast location that can sustain the selected video and audio bitrate with headroom for variation.

YouTube’s computer-streaming guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. The mobile workflow has separate eligibility rules; its subscriber threshold should not be applied to encoder streaming. YouTube’s computer live-streaming tips

Choose an ingest profile before making the batch

YouTube’s live encoder guidance, reviewed October 3, 2026, recommends RTMP or RTMPS ingest, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video up to 60 fps. It recommends RTMPS where supported for encrypted transport. For a broadly compatible example below, use H.264 video and AAC audio. Select the bitrate for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate, then check that your real upload can sustain it. YouTube live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions

Selected H.264 targets

Output profile YouTube-recommended video bitrate
720p30 8 Mbps
720p60 8 Mbps
1080p30 14 Mbps
1080p60 17 Mbps
1440p30 21 Mbps
1440p60 34 Mbps
2160p30 42 Mbps
2160p60 50 Mbps

These are YouTube’s published H.264 recommended ingest rates, not minimum network-speed guarantees. Its table also distinguishes minimums: for example, H.264 720p30 has a 6 Mbps minimum and 720p60 a 12 Mbps minimum. Other codecs have different recommended rates; YouTube lists 10 Mbps for H.265 or AV1 at 1080p30 and 12 Mbps at 1080p60. Choose using the row for your actual codec and output profile rather than carrying H.264 rates over to another codec.

For SDR, YouTube’s guidance specifies Rec. 709, 8-bit, square pixels, and progressive scan. It recommends AAC or MP3 audio; its stereo guidance is 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. Match the profile to the source when sensible: forcing a frame rate or scaling resolution may require deliberate conversion, and upscaling a small source does not restore detail.

How to choose between 720p and 1080p

Compare the upload capacity available at the broadcast location with the ingest rate and leave room for network fluctuation. At 30 fps, the H.264 recommendation rises from 8 Mbps at 720p to 14 Mbps at 1080p. A larger output is useful only if the source and upload path support it reliably.

Inspect inputs and decide what the batch should do

Before encoding, inspect representative files for duration, dimensions, frame rate, audio presence, orientation, and aspect ratio. Decide whether to preserve each source’s frame rate or normalize the whole batch to one profile. Avoid silently stretching images, removing audio, or converting unusual files with assumptions that do not fit them.

Use ffprobe if it is available with your FFmpeg installation to inspect media streams, or use a media-information tool. If files vary substantially, group similar inputs or handle exceptions separately. A single preset is convenient, but not universal.

Batch encode to a separate directory

The following Bash example processes MP4 files in the current directory into encoded/, handles spaces in filenames, does not overwrite existing outputs, and reports failures. It illustrates a 1080p30 H.264 bitrate target and a two-second GOP. Use it only for inputs that are already 30 fps and suitable for the intended output; it does not resize or normalize frame rate.

mkdir -p encoded
shopt -s nullglob
failed=0
for input in ./*.mp4; do
  name=${input##*/}
  output="encoded/${name%.*}.mp4"
  if [[ -e "$output" ]]; then
    printf 'Skipping existing output: %sn' "$output" >&2
    continue
  fi
  if ffmpeg -n -i "$input"
    -c:v libx264 -b:v 14M -maxrate 14M -bufsize 28M
    -g 60 -pix_fmt yuv420p
    -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
    "$output"; then
    printf 'Encoded: %sn' "$output"
  else
    printf 'FAILED: %sn' "$input" >&2
    failed=1
  fi
done
exit "$failed"

Here, -b:v is the video bitrate in bits per second; -maxrate and -bufsize shape rate control, while -g 60 sets a maximum GOP of 60 frames. At a constant 30 fps, that is approximately a two-second GOP. FFmpeg documents the bitrate and GOP controls; verify your build includes the chosen encoder, and check the output before using it live. • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

The example is illustrative, not a tested universal command. It assumes a suitable 30 fps source, uses AAC stereo-oriented settings, and does not map or preserve every possible audio track, subtitle, metadata field, or unusual pixel format. For 60 fps, a two-second GOP is approximately 120 frames; for a different frame rate, calculate accordingly. If you intentionally need a fixed output frame rate or resolution, add explicit conversion settings and verify that the result preserves the intended aspect ratio and audio.

Do not add -re to make offline encoding take the length of each video. Let FFmpeg use available processing capacity when generating files. The -re option belongs in the later live-playout step.

Play the encoded file to YouTube Live

  1. Open YouTube Studio’s live setup. Create or select the live stream and copy the current ingest address and stream name/key shown for that stream. Do not reuse an endpoint from an old tutorial. The YouTube Live API documents primary RTMP and RTMPS addresses and separately supplied stream names. YouTube Live Streaming API: LiveStreams
  2. Keep the stream key private. Treat it as a credential: do not publish it in a script, command history shared with others, screenshot, or public log. If exposed, replace or reset it in the live setup.
  3. Start a real-time playout. Use -re on the file input so FFmpeg reads it at its native rate instead of sending the whole recording as fast as it can. Substitute the current YouTube endpoint and stream name locally; the placeholders below are not credentials:
    ffmpeg -re -i "encoded/gameplay.mp4"
      -c:v copy -c:a copy
      -f flv "rtmps://CURRENT-INGEST-ADDRESS/STREAM_NAME"
  4. Confirm the ingest format and stream health. The copy command avoids another encode, but it is appropriate only when the file’s codecs, container-to-RTMP packaging, bitrate, keyframes, and audio are acceptable to YouTube. If not, encode during playout using settings for the chosen profile; test that exact command. Watch YouTube’s stream-health status and messages before relying on the setup.

FFmpeg documents -re as useful for simulating a live input from a file. The input option paces playback; it does not turn a playlist into an automatically continuous broadcast. To play multiple recordings in sequence, configure a suitable playlist or sequence workflow and rehearse transitions, audio continuity, and recovery behavior. FFmpeg documentation

Test the whole chain, including from India

No India-specific computer-encoder bitrate or FFmpeg setting is established in the cited YouTube guidance. For a creator in India, as elsewhere, the relevant practical question is whether the outbound connection at the actual broadcast location can sustain the selected upload rate. YouTube advises testing upload capacity and stream behavior; run a rehearsal from the same network and with similar motion and audio, then check the stream-health display. Mobile streaming has separate rules: YouTube’s Android help page lists a 50-subscriber minimum, verification, no restrictions in the prior 90 days, and possible activation delay, but those mobile requirements do not define encoder eligibility. YouTube mobile live-streaming guidance

Copyright and channel rules

Only stream recordings you have the rights to use, including music, game footage where applicable, and any third-party material. YouTube’s live encoder settings page is about technical ingest, not a blanket permission to rebroadcast copyrighted content. Technical acceptance of an encoder signal does not establish that a channel’s content complies with YouTube rules; check current platform policies and rights for the material before scheduling a broadcast.

Troubleshooting common failures

  • FFmpeg says the encoder is unavailable: your installed build may not include libx264 or another selected encoder. Check the encoders available in that build and use a package/build that supports your chosen codec.
  • The batch skips every file: the glob only matches lowercase .mp4 names in the current directory. Adjust the input pattern for your formats or directory layout; inspect the shell’s matched files before running a large batch.
  • Output is the wrong duration, speed, or motion cadence: the sample assumes 30 fps input and does not normalize frame rate. Inspect the source and add an intentional output frame rate if needed; recalculate the GOP to approximately two seconds.
  • Picture is stretched, cropped, or soft: the sample does not resize, but an added scale operation can alter aspect ratio or upscale a low-resolution source. Choose dimensions and aspect-preserving scaling deliberately, then review the file.
  • Audio is missing, distorted, or out of sync: confirm that the source has an audio stream and that its layout suits the command. Check the encoded file locally; unusual channel layouts or multiple tracks may need explicit stream mapping and conversion.
  • YouTube reports a poor or unstable stream: compare the actual output codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval with the selected YouTube profile. Test upload capacity from the broadcast network and reduce the profile if the connection cannot sustain it.
  • YouTube does not receive the stream: retrieve the current ingest address and stream name again, check for typos, and ensure the live setup is waiting for the encoder. Never paste a secret key into a public help request.
  • The recording arrives too quickly or the stream ends unexpectedly: use -re on the file input for real-time pacing. For multiple videos, verify that the chosen playlist or sequence method advances correctly rather than assuming one file command will loop or continue automatically.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep prerecorded videos live on YouTube without leaving a home computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The computer can be off while the cloud loops the uploaded videos. StreamNeo is for YouTube, not camera broadcasting.
