Fixing Alliances Not Working in ARK: Survival Evolved

An ARK alliance that will not form is usually blocked by permissions, offline raid protection, PreventTribeAlliances, capacity limits or server policy. Follow this diagnostic sequence to identify and fix the cause.

If an ARK: Survival Evolved alliance will not form, the cause is usually a permission mismatch, an offline-raid-protection rule, a server configuration flag, a capacity limit, or a server policy. Start in the Tribe Manager with the two tribe owners or administrators, then check the running server’s settings and restart it after any change.

Once an alliance is working, allied players and dinosaurs appear highlighted in cyan and an alliance chat becomes available. Alliances provide selected building, storage and defense interactions, but they do not merge tribe ownership or give every member unrestricted access.

Fast diagnosis: match the symptom to the cause

What you see Most likely reason What to do
The alliance option is missing or cannot be created Your character lacks tribe-owner or administrator control, offline raid protection is enabled, or the server blocks alliances Use the Tribe Manager as an owner or admin, then inspect offline-protection and alliance settings
The invite was sent but cannot be accepted The other tribe’s owner or admin has not accepted it, or the accepting character is only a regular member Have the other tribe’s owner or admin open Tribe Manager and accept the invitation
An alliance exists but additional tribes cannot join An alliance or tribe capacity limit has been reached Check the current alliance count and the server’s MaxAlliancesPerTribe and MaxTribesPerAlliance values
Nothing works on an official small-tribe server Informal alliances are prohibited by that server’s rules Follow the server policy; this is not necessarily a broken interface
Settings look correct, but the old behavior remains The running instance has not reloaded the edited configuration, or a different configuration file was changed Verify the active file, save it, and perform a full server restart

Use the Tribe Manager with the right permissions

Alliance management is not an ordinary member action. The tribe that starts the process needs an owner or an administrator to form the alliance and invite the other tribe. The invited tribe also needs its owner or an administrator to accept. A regular member may be able to play alongside allies after the alliance is active but still lack the controls required to create or approve one.

Correct creation and acceptance sequence

  1. Have an owner or administrator from the first tribe open the in-game Tribe Manager.
  2. Use the alliance controls to create the alliance and send an invitation to the other tribe.
  3. Ask the other tribe’s owner or administrator to open that tribe’s Tribe Manager while the invitation is available.
  4. Accept the invitation from the Tribe Manager on the second tribe’s side.
  5. Return to the game world and check for the cyan allied-player and allied-dinosaur indicators and the alliance chat channel.

If the invite appears to do nothing, repeat the process with both tribe owners present. Confirm that neither person is only a member, and make sure the invitation was sent to the intended tribe rather than to a similarly named one.

Check offline raid protection first

The ARK Official Community Wiki states: “Servers with offline protection mode enabled will disable being able to create a tribe alliance.” This is a server-wide restriction, so changing a character’s permissions will not overcome it.

On an unofficial server, the administrator should inspect the server’s offline-raid-protection (ORP) configuration. Disable the relevant ORP mode if alliances are intended, save the configuration, and restart the server. The exact location and label can vary with the hosting setup, but the important point is that the setting must be changed on the server that is actually running the map.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Players on an official server generally cannot change ORP settings themselves. If the server’s rules or mode includes offline protection, alliance creation may be intentionally unavailable.

Inspect PreventTribeAlliances

The GameUserSettings configuration includes a direct alliance block. The official configuration documentation describes it this way: “If True, prevents tribes from creating Alliances.”

Required value

For a server that should permit alliances, the setting must be false or absent as a blocking value:

PreventTribeAlliances=False

After changing the value, save the file and fully restart the server. A live process normally continues using the values it loaded at startup, so editing an INI while the server remains online may appear to have no effect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make sure you edited the active configuration

  • Confirm that the file belongs to the correct ARK server instance and map.
  • Check that the setting is in the server’s active GameUserSettings configuration rather than a local client file.
  • Make sure the text uses the exact key name and a boolean value such as False.
  • Stop and start the server, rather than merely disconnecting and reconnecting a player.
  • After startup, test with the same owner or administrator accounts used to create the alliance.

Dedicated-server deployment is the supported path for administrators who need to inspect and edit these values. Managed hosting can also provide this access, but the administrator still needs to identify which configuration file the running instance loads.

Check alliance capacity limits

The current official tribe documentation describes two relevant limits: a tribe can be in up to five alliances, and one alliance can contain up to twelve tribes. These are documented game limits, not a guarantee that every unofficial server uses the same values.

Unofficial servers can impose additional limits through configuration:

Setting What it limits Typical symptom when reached
MaxAlliancesPerTribe How many alliances a tribe may form or join A tribe that already belongs to its allowed number cannot create or join another
MaxTribesPerAlliance How many tribes may belong to one alliance The alliance exists, but another tribe cannot be added

Compare the in-game state with the values loaded by the server. Count every existing alliance and every tribe in the target alliance, including arrangements created earlier. If a limit was recently lowered, removing an existing alliance may be necessary before a new one can be formed.

Determine whether the server’s rules prohibit alliances

Not every failure is a technical fault. Official small-tribe servers prohibit informal alliances. That policy is documented in Community Crunch 135 (2018), so an alliance request on one of those servers may be rejected by design even when the Tribe Manager appears normal.

Before changing settings or reporting a bug, identify the server type and its rule set:

Server type Who controls alliance settings What the player can do
Official standard server The game operator; players do not edit its INI files Follow the mode’s rules and use only the alliance functions that the server permits
Official small-tribe server The game operator and the published small-tribe policy Do not treat prohibited informal alliances as an interface bug
Unofficial self-hosted dedicated server The server owner or administrator Inspect ORP, PreventTribeAlliances, capacity values and the active configuration, then restart
Unofficial managed dedicated server The account holder and the hosting control panel or support process Use the panel or request access to the active GameUserSettings file, then restart the instance
Non-dedicated session The player hosting the session, with fewer persistent server controls Have the host verify available alliance options; persistent INI administration may not be exposed

Rules and configuration can overlap. For example, a server may permit alliances in its INI while an event rule or small-tribe policy still forbids players from using informal cooperation. Treat the published rule set as authoritative for that server.

Verify that the alliance is actually functioning

After acceptance, test the alliance rather than relying only on a message or menu entry. The expected signs are:

  • Allied players are highlighted in cyan.
  • Allied dinosaurs are highlighted in cyan.
  • An alliance chat option is available.
  • Permitted allied building interactions work where the server and structure rules allow them.
  • Selected powered-outlet interactions are available to allies.
  • Allies can access eligible troughs.
  • Neutral creatures can respond in defense of allied players or structures under the game’s normal behavior.

These benefits do not create shared ownership. An alliance is not the same as merging tribes: it does not automatically transfer structures, tame ownership, inventories, ranks or every permission. If one specific interaction fails, first determine whether it is outside the alliance feature’s intended scope instead of assuming the entire alliance is broken.

  1. Record the current alliance membership and the relevant configuration values.
  2. Stop the ARK server cleanly through its normal administrative method.
  3. Open the GameUserSettings file used by that server instance and confirm the intended values, including PreventTribeAlliances=False where applicable.
  4. Check the ORP setting and both capacity settings for a conflicting value.
  5. Save the file without changing unrelated settings.
  6. Start the server and wait until the map is fully available.
  7. Reconnect the tribe owners or administrators and repeat the invitation and acceptance sequence.
  8. Test cyan highlighting, alliance chat and one permitted interaction.

A restart is an operational troubleshooting step, not a promise that every alliance problem is fixed by rebooting. If the old behavior returns, the most useful next check is whether the administrator edited the file loaded by the running process. Multiple server instances, copied configuration folders and control panels that regenerate files can all make a correct-looking edit ineffective.

What changed over time?

Tribe alliances were introduced in Patch 235.0. Their availability therefore depends on using a game version and server setup that support the feature. Current documentation still records the five-alliance-per-tribe and twelve-tribe-per-alliance limits, while server operators may impose stricter limits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The feature’s existence does not override later server policies. In particular, the small-tribe no-informal-alliances rule documented in Community Crunch 135 (2018) remains a separate policy question from whether the Tribe Manager contains alliance controls.

A practical decision tree

  1. Can an owner or admin see the Tribe Manager alliance controls? If not, verify the character’s tribe role and the server’s rules.
  2. Can the first tribe send an invitation? If not, check ORP and PreventTribeAlliances, then restart an unofficial server after changes.
  3. Can the second tribe accept? Have its owner or admin accept; a regular member may not have the required control.
  4. Is the alliance full or is the tribe at its alliance limit? Compare current membership with the documented limits and loaded INI values.
  5. Does the alliance appear active but lack a feature? Confirm the feature is one of the selected alliance interactions, not unrestricted ownership sharing.
  6. Does the problem persist after a restart? Verify the active configuration file and check whether an official policy, rather than a setting, is blocking alliances.

Conclusion

Fix ARK alliances in order: use the Tribe Manager with the correct owner or administrator, rule out offline raid protection, set PreventTribeAlliances to false on an unofficial server, check alliance-capacity values, and respect official small-tribe rules. Restart the actual running server after configuration changes and verify the result through cyan ally indicators, alliance chat and the specific interaction you need. This separates a permissions problem from a deliberate server restriction and from a feature that alliances were never designed to provide.
