Fixing the 7 Days to Die “Same Key Already Exists” Dictionary Error

The 7 Days to Die duplicate-key exception has several causes. Use the stack-trace subsystem to choose the safe fix for launch flags, mods, Power.dat corruption, or version mismatches.

The ArgumentException: An element with the same key already exists in the dictionary message is not a single 7 Days to Die problem. It means that one subsystem tried to add a key that was already present. The failing subsystem named in the stack trace determines the repair: a repeated -dedicated launch flag, a mod or asset collision, corrupted electrical-network data in Power.dat, or incompatible game and mod versions.

Do not delete save files at random. Find the first useful subsystem name after Dictionary.Add, back up anything you may change, and follow the matching branch below. Historical forum cases cover older game and mod builds, so treat them as diagnostic patterns rather than proof that every current installation has the same cause.

Read the stack trace before changing anything

The exception text only identifies the symptom: a dictionary received a duplicate key. The key can be created while the server parses its startup arguments, while the game registers mod assets, or while a saved world restores electrical-network nodes. The stack trace is the diagnostic fork.

Open the server or game log and locate the first occurrence of ArgumentException. Then inspect the method names around Dictionary.Add. The most useful names are:

  • ParseCommandLine or entries from a launch script: investigate duplicate startup flags.
  • ModManager, texture or icon loading, or XML patch warnings: isolate mods and duplicate assets.
  • PowerManager.LoadPowerManager, PowerManager.AddPowerNode, or a duplicate Vector3i coordinate: test the affected world’s Power.dat.
  • A trace that remains after a clean, unmodded launch: check game, server, and mod version alignment and test a clean world or profile.

A Fun Pimps forum log, for example, shows PowerManager.AddPowerNode failing on the coordinate Key: -159, 28, 838. That points to persisted world data, not a duplicated command-line switch. See the original log at The Fun Pimps forum.

Trace clue Usually happens Mods implicated? Data-loss risk Reversible test
ParseCommandLine, repeated launch-script entries Before world loading No None Yes; edit the command or manager entry
ModManager, ItemIcons, XML patch warnings During asset registration Yes Usually none to saves when only the Mods folder is moved Yes; run without Mods, then restore individually
PowerManager, duplicate Vector3i While loading a saved world Not necessarily Electrical-network state in that world may be lost Yes if the complete save is backed up first
Persistent error after clean tests Startup or world load Possible version mismatch Depends on the data changed Yes; clean profile/world and incremental restore

Fix a duplicate startup flag

When the trace contains ParseCommandLine, the dictionary is being built from launch arguments. Check both the command that starts the dedicated server and any server-manager fields that append arguments automatically. Look for the same switch entered twice, including a switch supplied once by a script and once by the manager.

  • Farm or Hunt – Plant gardens for sustainable resources or head out to the wilderness and hunt over a dozen unique animals.

Check the effective launch command

  1. Stop the server completely. Do not edit a command while an old process is still running.
  2. Open the launch script or manager’s startup-arguments field and search for repeated flags. A duplicated entry can look like -dedicated -dedicated, or the manager may add -dedicated to a script that already contains it.
  3. Remove only the extra occurrence and leave unrelated options unchanged.
  4. Save the configuration, start the server, and read the new log from the beginning. Confirm that the ParseCommandLine exception is gone before diagnosing later messages.

A Fun Pimps moderator described one Linux case plainly: “Which is understandable because you have -dedicated twice.” The case is documented at the forum thread about a Linux dedicated server. The correction belongs in the launch configuration; deleting a world or reinstalling the game will not remove a repeated argument.

Isolate a mod or asset collision

A trace mentioning ModManager, icon or texture registration, or XML patch warnings indicates that two assets may be registering the same name. One documented case reports duplicate ItemIcons files; another support response recommends removing all mods, validating the base installation, and checking each mod individually. The relevant threads are the duplicate-asset discussion and the troubleshooting thread with the clean-install advice.

Use a clean baseline

  1. Stop the game or dedicated server.
  2. Make a backup of the save or world before changing the installation. Mod removal can make a world temporarily unplayable if it depends on modded content.
  3. Move the entire Mods folder outside the game or server directory. Moving it, rather than deleting it, keeps the test reversible.
  4. Use the platform’s file-validation or verify-installation function to repair or confirm the base files.
  5. Start an unmodded game or server. Test the same world only if you have a backup; otherwise use a disposable clean world first.

Restore mods one at a time

If the clean launch succeeds, close the game, restore one mod, and repeat the test. Keep notes of the order and exact versions. When the exception returns, the last mod or its interaction with an earlier mod is the leading suspect. Inspect that package for duplicate icon or texture files and for XML patches targeting the same entry. Remove the conflicting file or obtain a compatible release, then retest from the clean baseline.

If the error remains with the Mods folder absent and validated base files, stop treating it as a simple mod collision. Continue with the version and world-data checks below; repeatedly reinstalling the same files does not address a duplicate key stored in a save.

Repair a PowerManager or Vector3i failure

When the trace names PowerManager.LoadPowerManager or PowerManager.AddPowerNode, the duplicate key can be a saved coordinate in the world’s electrical network. Pingperfect describes a corrupted Power.dat as a cause of this exact log error and recommends a backup, deletion, and restart sequence: Pingperfect’s Power.dat troubleshooting page.

Back up before deleting

  1. Stop the server and make a full copy of the affected save or world directory, not just a screenshot or configuration export. Store the copy somewhere separate from the live installation.
  2. Use the log to identify which world is failing. Do not remove a file from every world or from a different profile.
  3. Inside that world’s save data, locate Power.dat. Delete only that file from the live copy.
  4. Start the server and load the world. Watch the log for a successful world load and test the affected electrical systems.
  5. If the result is worse, stop the server and restore the backed-up world directory. Do not overwrite the backup with the post-deletion state.

Removing Power.dat is a targeted diagnostic, not a harmless cache clear. It can discard stored electrical-network state, so circuits, powered devices, or related connections may need to be rebuilt. Player inventory, terrain, and other world data should remain in their own files, but the complete backup is what makes recovery possible.

Handle version mismatches and stubborn failures

The same exception can be raised by an incompatibility rather than a damaged file. A Fun Pimps support reply discussing an A19.6 and Darkness Falls case identifies a mod error or version mismatch as possible explanations: the support thread. Current builds can differ substantially from those historical examples.

Check every participant in the stack

  • Confirm that the client and dedicated server are on the same game build.
  • Confirm that every installed mod supports that build and that the server has the same mod set and versions as connecting clients.
  • Check whether a server manager, launch script, or automatic updater is supplying a different executable or branch than the one you expect.
  • After updating, do not assume an old modded world is a valid compatibility test. Make a backup and test a clean world or server profile.

Restore data incrementally

For a persistent error, start with the validated base installation, no Mods folder, and a clean profile or world. Establish that this baseline starts. Then restore configuration, one mod, and saved data in separate steps, launching after each change. The first step that reintroduces the exception identifies the layer to investigate. This is slower than replacing everything at once, but it prevents a damaged save and an incompatible mod from being confused with each other.

Common mistakes that prolong the outage

  • Deleting the whole save: a startup-argument error occurs before world loading and cannot be fixed by destroying world data.
  • Deleting Power.dat without a backup: the file may contain recoverable electrical-network state.
  • Testing all mods together: a clean launch proves only that at least one removed component mattered; one-at-a-time restoration identifies which one.
  • Reading only the final log line: later shutdown errors can obscure the first subsystem that created the duplicate key.
  • Mixing versions during testing: changing the game, server, and several mods simultaneously removes the evidence needed to isolate the incompatibility.

A repeatable diagnostic workflow

  1. Copy the complete log and mark the first duplicate-key exception.
  2. Record the first subsystem named near Dictionary.Add: command-line parsing, mod/assets, PowerManager, or an unresolved version path.
  3. Stop the process before editing scripts, moving Mods, or deleting save data.
  4. Back up the relevant configuration and world before any destructive test.
  5. Apply only the branch-specific change: remove the repeated flag, move Mods and validate, or remove the affected world’s Power.dat.
  6. Restart and compare the new log with the original. A successful start should be followed by a focused gameplay or server-connection test, not a wholesale restoration of every old component.
  7. Document the working build, mod versions, and changed file so the same conflict can be avoided after the next update.

What the error tells you—and what it does not

The message establishes that a duplicate dictionary key was attempted. It does not, by itself, identify whether the key was a command-line option, an asset name, or a saved coordinate. The subsystem in the stack trace supplies that missing context. A duplicate -dedicated entry is fixed in the launch configuration; asset conflicts require a clean, incremental mod test; a PowerManager coordinate failure justifies a backed-up Power.dat removal; and failures that survive those tests call for version alignment and a clean profile.

Because the cited examples come from particular historical builds, use their method rather than assuming their exact file layout or mod behavior applies to your installation. Preserve backups until the server has started reliably and the world has been checked in-game.
