The exact wording has not been confirmed in indexed official documentation, so treat it as a symptom description, not a documented error with a single guaranteed fix. The procedure below addresses the configuration conditions that prevent every messaging adapter from starting.

What the “No Messaging Platforms Enabled” message usually means
A Hermes gateway can have valid credentials and still expose no messaging service. Each adapter is controlled independently. The gateway reads a top-level platforms: section and checks platforms.<name>.enabled. If every configured adapter is disabled, absent, or loaded from the wrong file, Hermes has no platform to start.
Credentials do not turn an adapter on. A token in .env proves only that a secret is available to the process; the corresponding platform must also be enabled in YAML. Conversely, setting enabled: true without the required token or allow-list can leave the adapter unable to authenticate or reject incoming users.

Separate the three settings Hermes needs
- Platform selection: a YAML entry such as
platforms.<name>.enabled: true. - Secrets and environment values: uppercase, underscore-separated names in
.env, for exampleTELEGRAM_ALLOWED_USERSorDISCORD_ALLOWED_USERS. - Runtime location: the Hermes home directory and configuration file that the gateway process actually reads.
Fixing one layer while another is wrong produces the same “nothing enabled” symptom, so check them in that order.
Before changing anything
Stop duplicate gateways first, especially if Telegram is involved. Keep a copy of the current files, and edit the files belonging to the same Hermes home used by the gateway—not necessarily the directory belonging to your interactive shell.
- Identify whether Hermes is running directly on the host, as a service, or inside Docker.
- Locate the Hermes home directory. The documented default location is
~/.hermes. - Back up
config.yamland.envbefore editing. - Choose one platform to test first. Enabling several at once makes it harder to identify a malformed token or adapter-specific failure.
Do not copy configuration examples that use unrelated top-level keys such as telegram: or an alternative gateways: schema without checking the version of Hermes you installed. The documented layout for this troubleshooting path is the top-level platforms: block.
Enable at least one messaging platform
Open ~/.hermes/config.yaml and find (or create) the platforms: section. Under the adapter name, set its enabled switch to a YAML boolean, not a quoted string.

enabled: trueThe adapter name in this example is illustrative of the documented structure. Use the exact name and nested options specified by the Hermes version you installed. YAML indentation matters: enabled must be nested below the platform, and platforms must be at the document’s top level.
Check the value and indentation
- Use
trueorfalse, not"true",yes, or a capitalized variant. - Use spaces consistently; do not mix tabs with spaces.
- Make sure there is only one active
platforms:block. A later duplicate key can override an earlier one depending on the YAML parser. - Confirm that the file you edited is the one read by the running gateway; a correct setting in an unused file has no effect.
Enable only the platform you are testing
For a first launch, leave unrelated adapters disabled. This narrows the log output and prevents a bad optional configuration from obscuring a working platform. Once the first adapter reaches a ready state, add other platforms one at a time and restart after each change.

Hermes configuration documentation distinguishes uppercase environment names from dotted YAML settings. Names such as TELEGRAM_ALLOWED_USERS and DISCORD_ALLOWED_USERS belong in .env; settings expressed as dotted paths belong in config.yaml.

Keep the file in the same Hermes home directory as config.yaml, and do not add shell syntax such as export unless the Hermes documentation specifically requires it.

Common environment-file failures
- Wrong directory: the host user’s
.envis present, but the service runs under another account or inside a container. - Typo or case mismatch: environment names are conventionally uppercase and underscore-separated.
- Invisible characters: copying a token with trailing spaces or smart quotation marks can make authentication fail.
- Allow-list format: an allow-list containing the wrong user ID can make a connected bot appear unresponsive even though the adapter started.
- Secret exposure: do not paste tokens into issue reports or public logs. Redact them when sharing diagnostics.
After editing .env, reload the process. Most long-running services do not reread environment variables until they restart.
Verify the configuration path in Docker
Container deployments add a third failure mode: the file exists on the host, but the container reads a different path. A GitHub report, issue #45792, describes a Docker setup in which ~/.hermes was mounted at /opt/data while the gateway could not find configured webhooks. The reporter tried HERMES_CONFIG=/opt/data/config.yaml without resolving the broader configuration and state-path problem. That issue is not proof that the same condition causes the “No Messaging Platforms Enabled” message, but it is a useful warning against assuming a mount is being used.
What to verify inside the container
- Check that the container contains the intended
config.yamlat the path used by the Hermes process. - Check that the corresponding
.envfile or environment variables are available inside the container. - Confirm file permissions allow the service user to read both files.
- Look at gateway startup output for the configuration or Hermes home path it loaded.
- Change one setting, restart, and verify that the startup output reflects that change. If nothing changes, you are editing the wrong filesystem location.
The Docker issue does not establish that setting HERMES_CONFIG alone is sufficient. Treat that variable as version- and deployment-dependent, and verify the effective path from the process output instead of relying only on the host-side mount declaration.
Profiles can select a different configuration
If your Hermes installation supports profiles, start the gateway with the profile that contains the enabled platform and its credentials. A profile can make a valid-looking edit appear ineffective when the gateway is actually loading another configuration set.

- Record the profile name used by your service, shell script, or container entrypoint.
- Open the profile’s messaging configuration and check its
platforms.<name>.enabledvalue. - Ensure the profile can see the same
.envvalues as the process that starts the gateway. - After switching profiles, inspect startup output again; a successful process start does not prove that the intended profile was selected.
Restart the gateway and read the startup output
A running gateway generally keeps its parsed configuration in memory. Restart it after changing YAML, environment variables, profile selection, or mounts. One third-party operating guide lists hermes gateway run for foreground operation, hermes gateway install for installing a service, and hermes gateway restart for applying changes. These command names should be checked against the current Hermes documentation and your installed version before use.

hermes gateway restartUse the foreground form when diagnosing a service: it keeps startup messages visible and can reveal YAML parsing errors, missing environment variables, adapter authentication failures, and the effective config path. If you use a service manager, stop the old process before starting a replacement so that two gateways do not compete for the same bot account.

What a useful startup check should establish
- The process started with the intended Hermes home and profile.
- At least one platform was discovered with
enabled: true. - The required token or credential was present without printing its value.
- The adapter reached its connection or polling stage rather than exiting during configuration loading.
- No second process is already using the same account.
Telegram has a one-gateway-per-token rule
Each Telegram bot token can be used by only one running gateway at a time. Telegram rejects concurrent polling for the same token. If you start a local foreground process while a service or Docker container is still running, the new process may fail even though the YAML and token are correct.
- List the host and container processes that could run Hermes.
- Stop all but one gateway using the token.
- Start the intended gateway and watch its connection messages.
- If you need separate test and production instances, create separate bot tokens rather than sharing one.
This single-instance restriction is specific to the Telegram polling arrangement described here; do not interpret a Telegram conflict as proof that every Hermes platform is disabled.

Configuration mistakes to avoid
Putting every setting in YAML
Do not move token and allow-list variables into arbitrary dotted YAML keys when the platform documentation defines them as environment variables. Hermes may ignore unknown keys while still parsing the rest of the file, leaving the adapter without credentials.
Putting the enable switch in .env
An environment variable named something like TELEGRAM_ENABLED is not a substitute for the documented nested YAML switch unless your installed version explicitly says otherwise. Keep platform activation in config.yaml.

Changing several variables before one restart
Batch edits make it difficult to identify the failing layer. Enable one platform, supply only its required values, restart, and then expand the configuration after it works.
Trusting a successful process exit
A process that remains running can still have no usable adapter. Confirm that the startup output names an enabled platform and that the adapter reaches its connection stage.
Final verification checklist

The exact phrase is not documented as a confirmed official error, so those details are necessary to distinguish an adapter-specific failure from a generic configuration-path problem.
