W3 Total Cache errors are usually fixed by separating two different systems: Minify changes the CSS, JavaScript, and HTML files your site sends, while Page Cache stores completed HTML pages. Disable and test those systems independently, purge every cache layer after each change, and then re-enable only the settings your theme and plugins tolerate.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
This runbook covers broken layouts, missing scripts, stale pages, blank screens, HTTP 500 responses, and settings that will not save. It also shows when the problem is outside WordPress—in filesystem ownership, rewrite rules, a host cache, or a CDN.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsKnow which W3 Total Cache layer is failing
Start by identifying the layer instead of changing every performance option at once. W3 Total Cache can cache minified and compressed pages, posts, CSS, and JavaScript, using storage such as disk, Redis, or Memcached. Page Cache and Minify affect different parts of a request, so a fix for one may leave the other untouched.
| Layer | What it changes | Typical symptoms | First isolation test |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minify | Removes unnecessary data from HTML, CSS, and JavaScript and may combine or rewrite assets. | Broken spacing, missing images or fonts, menus and sliders that do not respond, console errors, or a page that looks unstyled. | Turn off Minify while leaving Page Cache unchanged. |
| Page Cache | Stores generated HTML so WordPress does not rebuild a page for every request. | Old text after an update, the wrong visitor state, stale redirects, or a page that remains incorrect after an asset fix. | Disable Page Cache temporarily, purge it, and request a fresh page. |
| Browser, CDN, reverse proxy, or host cache | Stores a copy outside W3TC. | Your change appears in one browser but not another, or old CSS and HTML return after W3TC is purged. | Purge the external layer and test in a private window. |
Minification is intended to remove redundant code without changing behavior, but WordPress documentation warns that theme and plugin code can conflict with it. Treat every asset combination as a compatibility change, not as a harmless switch.

Capture the exact failure before changing settings
Write down what fails and when. This prevents a later cache purge from hiding the original cause.
- Classify the symptom. Choose the closest description: layout or JavaScript failure, stale HTML, redirect loop, blank page, HTTP 500 response, or an error while saving settings.
- Open the browser developer tools. In Console, note the first JavaScript exception. In Network, reload the page and record the first CSS or JavaScript request that returns an error, an unexpected content type, or a redirect.
- Compare visitor states. Check an incognito window while logged out, then a normal window while logged in. A page that is correct for administrators but wrong for visitors often indicates cached dynamic output.
- Record the URL and time. Include the affected page, the exact asset URL, and the timestamp. These details are essential if a host must inspect server logs.
Use W3TC’s Preview mode when available. It lets an administrator inspect the plugin’s output before that output is delivered to ordinary visitors, making it safer to test a setting on a live site.
Use a controlled, reversible troubleshooting sequence
- Enable Preview mode. In the WordPress Performance settings, turn on Preview before experimenting with cache behavior.
- Purge all relevant caches. Empty W3TC’s caches, then purge any CDN, reverse-proxy, host-level cache, and browser cache. Otherwise an old response can make a successful change look ineffective.
- Isolate Minify. Disable Minify only. Leave Page Cache as it was, purge again, and retest the failing page. If the layout or script starts working, Minify is the likely cause.
- Isolate Page Cache. If HTML remains stale or incorrect with Minify disabled, disable Page Cache, purge, and request the page again. If the fresh response is correct, investigate Page Cache rules or another cache layer.
- Change one setting at a time. After every change, purge, test logged-out and logged-in views, and verify both styling and interaction.
- Return to normal delivery only after verification. Turn off Preview mode after the tested configuration works for the affected templates.
Repair Minify when the layout or JavaScript breaks
Confirm Auto mode is the trigger
If disabling Minify immediately restores the page, do not re-enable Auto mode unchanged. Automatic discovery can process an asset in an order or combination that a particular theme or plugin does not support. A broken layout, missing font, or a menu that stops responding is enough evidence to move to a controlled configuration.

Switch to Manual mode
In the Minify settings, select Manual mode and use W3TC’s help or asset-discovery controls to identify the CSS and JavaScript files that should be processed. Start with the smallest set: add one stylesheet or script group, purge caches, and test before adding another. This makes the first incompatible file identifiable instead of leaving a large combined bundle to debug.
Exclude the asset that causes the conflict
When the browser console or Network panel points to a particular file, remove that file from Minify or add it to the relevant exclusion field. Do the same for an inline script if the failure occurs before any external file loads. Keep the rest of the assets minified; a targeted exclusion is safer than disabling the entire feature permanently.
Preserve the order in which dependent scripts are loaded. If excluding one file fixes the page, leave that exclusion in place and document the reason so a later theme or plugin update does not accidentally remove it.

Clear stale generated assets
After switching between Auto and Manual modes, purge W3TC’s Minify cache as well as browser and CDN caches. Old generated filenames can continue to be requested until every layer is cleared. Test with a private window and inspect the Network panel to ensure the page is requesting the new asset URLs.
Repair Page Cache when HTML is stale or incorrect
Separate stale HTML from stale assets
Publish a harmless test edit, such as a temporary post update, then purge W3TC and reload while logged out. If the edit appears only after Page Cache is disabled, the page cache is serving an old copy. If the edit appears but the page still looks wrong, return to the Minify investigation because the HTML is fresh while the assets are not.
Choose a cache method that fits the server
Disk Enhanced is documented as a suitable starting method for many installations. If interoperability with WordPress, themes, and plugins is more important than peak load-test results, enable the Compatibility mode option in the advanced Page Cache settings; the W3TC documentation describes it as disabled by default but highly recommended for compatibility.

Other installations may use a basic disk method, Redis, or Memcached. The best choice depends on what the host actually provides and permits. Do not switch storage methods during an incident unless you can purge the old method and verify that the new cache directory or service is writable.
Exclude dynamic requests
Logged-in pages, account areas, carts, forms, previews, and other personalized URLs should not be delivered as one public cached copy. Review W3TC’s URL and cookie exclusions for the affected feature, and account for both HTTP and HTTPS or alternate host variants. A page that is correct for one user but shows another user’s state is an exclusion problem, not a Minify problem.

Check filesystem ownership first
W3TC must write cache files and may need to update server configuration. Its FAQ identifies mismatched file ownership as a common reason those writes fail. Ask the host to correct ownership for the WordPress files and cache directories; do not broadly change permissions as a first response. Ownership and permissions are different controls, and opening every file can create a security problem without fixing the write failure.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Inspect rewrite rules and server configuration
Page Cache and Minify may generate Apache or Nginx rules. Verify that the generated rules match the server in use, that the site’s HTTPS and host variants are consistent, and that a stale rule is not redirecting requests in a loop. If saving a setting produces a 500 response, use the host’s error log to identify the exact rule or file operation that failed before trying another configuration.
Look beyond WordPress
A host-level page cache, Varnish-style reverse proxy, or CDN can continue serving an old response after W3TC is empty. Purge those layers or temporarily bypass them, then test directly against the origin if the host provides a safe method. Make sure the external layer is not caching the WordPress administrator, preview URLs, or dynamic cookies.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Use a safe rollback
If the dashboard becomes inaccessible, ask the host to disable the failing cache module or restore the last working rewrite configuration. Once access returns, leave Page Cache and Minify disabled, purge every layer, and reintroduce one module at a time. A blank page is not a reason to repeatedly toggle both modules together; that destroys the evidence needed to identify the fault.
Compare the available cache approaches
| Approach | Best use in this runbook | Trade-off | Access or dependency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Disk Enhanced | Starting point for many standard WordPress installations. | Can require compatibility and rewrite checks. | WordPress administrator plus a writable cache location and correct server rules. |
| Basic disk cache | Simple file-based caching when enhanced behavior is unsuitable. | Exact performance or compatibility result is server-dependent. | Writable filesystem; host may need to correct ownership. |
| Redis or Memcached | Sites whose host supplies and supports an object-cache service. | Requires a correctly configured service; changing methods mid-incident complicates purging. | Host or server access and service credentials, if required. |
| Host, CDN, or reverse-proxy cache | Delivery outside WordPress, often alongside W3TC. | Can hide W3TC changes and needs its own purge and exclusion rules. | Host or CDN control-panel access; WordPress access alone may not be enough. |
Retest with a one-change protocol
For each proposed fix, follow the same short loop:
- Note the current setting and the symptom.
- Make one change in W3TC.
- Purge W3TC and every external cache that could contain the response.
- Load the page in an incognito window while logged out.
- Load it again while logged in and check a dynamic URL if relevant.
- Inspect Console and Network for the first failing asset, not just the final cascade of errors.
- Publish or update a harmless test post and confirm that fresh HTML appears.
- Keep the change only if both the original failure and the new test pass.
Match the symptom to the next action
| Observed problem | Likely area | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Layout breaks or JavaScript stops after enabling Minify | Minify processing or asset order | Disable Minify, purge, then use Manual mode and exclude the first failing CSS, JavaScript, or inline script. |
| Old page text remains after an edit | Page Cache or an external cache | Purge W3TC, CDN, host, reverse proxy, and browser; then test with Page Cache disabled. |
| Correct for administrators, wrong for visitors | Cached dynamic URL or cookie | Review logged-in and dynamic exclusions and test the public URL while logged out. |
| Blank page or HTTP 500 after saving | Rewrite rule, file write, or server layer | Check the server error log and ask the host to verify ownership, generated rules, and host-level caching. |
| Settings fail to save | Filesystem ownership or server write permission | Have the host correct ownership and confirm that W3TC’s cache and configuration paths are writable. |
When to involve your host
Escalate with a compact evidence package: the exact URL, UTC timestamp, first failing CSS or JavaScript request, browser-console message, active W3TC cache method, PHP and web-server stack, and the relevant server-log line. Ask the host specifically to verify filesystem ownership, cache-directory writes, Apache or Nginx rewrite rules, HTTPS and host variants, and any host-level page cache or CDN purge. This gives support enough information to fix the server layer instead of asking you to repeat unrelated plugin toggles.
There is no universal W3TC setting. A stable configuration is the one that matches your server, theme, plugins, and delivery stack, with Minify and Page Cache tested independently and every cache layer purged after a meaningful change.
