The reliable fix is to match ownership and write access to the process that needs them and to the way you maintain the site. In many installations, the site or FTP user should own the files, while the web server receives write access only to specific paths such as wp-content/uploads.

First identify the exact path that fails, the account running PHP, and the operation involved. Then correct the narrowest owner, group, permission, ACL, or security context that restores that operation. This avoids breaking SSH/SFTP updates and limits the damage a compromised web process could cause.

Why WordPress reports “cannot create directory” or “permission denied”
Every file operation is evaluated against three ordinary Unix attributes: the owner, the group, and the mode bits. A request handled by PHP must have permission to traverse each parent directory and to read or write the target. An upload can therefore fail because the uploads directory is not writable, because a parent directory blocks traversal, or because PHP is running as a different account than you expected.
The account name www-data is common on Debian- and Ubuntu-family systems, but it is not universal. Other servers use accounts such as apache, nginx, www, or a per-site PHP-FPM user. Managed hosts may add ACLs, containers, or policy controls that are invisible in a simple owner/mode listing.

WordPress documentation recommends keeping files owned by the site or FTP user in normal deployments. On shared hosting, it specifically warns that files should not be owned by the web-server process itself. A blanket recursive chown can make the dashboard appear fixed while preventing the real administrator from replacing files over SSH or SFTP later.
Diagnose the failing path before changing ownership
1. Capture the operation and exact path
Read the complete WordPress error. Record whether it occurs during a media upload, plugin or theme installation, an update, a cache write, a backup, or another task. Note the directory named in the message; changing unrelated paths increases risk and makes rollback harder.

2. Inspect owner, group, and modes
From the site’s document root, inspect the target and every parent directory. Replace the example path with your real installation path:
ls -ld /var/www/html/wordpress /var/www/html/wordpress/wp-content /var/www/html/wordpress/wp-content/uploads
find /var/www/html/wordpress/wp-content/uploads -maxdepth 2 -printf '%M %u:%g %pn'The first command shows the owner, group, and mode for each directory. The second makes mismatches visible below the target. A directory needs execute permission for traversal as well as write permission for creating or deleting entries.
3. Confirm the account that runs PHP
Check the PHP-FPM pool or web-server service configuration used by this virtual host; do not assume that the operating-system default applies to your site. On a server you administer, process listings and the pool configuration can show the effective user and group. If you do not control those settings, ask the host which account handles PHP requests.

4. Check controls beyond mode bits
If the owner, group, and modes look correct, investigate POSIX ACLs, container-volume ownership, and mandatory access control. On Red Hat-family systems, SELinux can deny a write even when ordinary Unix permissions appear open. Audit logs and the file’s security context are more useful than repeatedly loosening modes.

WordPress’s commonly documented baseline is 755 for directories and 644 for files. These values allow the owner to write while other permitted users can read; directory execute bits allow traversal. They are a starting point, not a promise that every host uses the same model.

To restore the documented baseline after an accidental mode change, WordPress publishes these commands:
find /path/to/your/wordpress/install/ -type d -exec chmod 755 {} ;
find /path/to/your/wordpress/install/ -type f -exec chmod 644 {} ;Run them only against the intended installation, and remember that they set modes, not ownership, ACLs, SELinux labels, or container mappings. If your deployment intentionally uses stricter or shared-group modes, record those requirements before applying a broad reset.
Choose an ownership model that matches your workflow

The least-privilege choice is the one that grants the web process only the writes required by the feature. Keep WordPress core, configuration, and code paths under the administrative owner unless a specific, documented operation needs otherwise.

Fix a media-upload failure
Step 1: verify the uploads path
In the WordPress dashboard, check the configured uploads location and compare it with the path in the error. Confirm that the directory exists and that every parent directory is traversable by the PHP account.
Step 2: grant access only to that path
If the PHP account really is www-data and your hosting policy allows the service account to own uploads, a support example is:
sudo chown -R www-data:www-data /var/www/html/wordpress/wp-content/uploadsThis is a context-specific example, not a universal prescription. Substitute the verified PHP account and exact path; do not run it against the whole WordPress tree. If administrators also need direct access, a shared group or ACL model may be safer than making the service account the sole owner.
Step 3: test and inspect new files
Upload one small image, then inspect the resulting file and directory. Confirm that the web process can create files and that your normal administrator can still back up, move, or remove them. If the upload succeeds but later maintenance fails, your owner/group model does not match the workflow and should be redesigned rather than “fixed” with another recursive command.
Fix plugin or theme installation and update failures
Plugin and theme installation writes code into wp-content/plugins or wp-content/themes. Do not make the entire site world-writable to solve this. Decide whether dashboard updates or administrator-run deployment is the intended workflow.

Dashboard-managed workflow
Grant the PHP account write access to only the directories that the dashboard must modify, using ownership, a shared group, or ACLs approved for your server. Test installation, update, and deletion separately because they exercise directory creation, file replacement, and removal.
SSH/SFTP or automated workflow
Keep the site user as owner and perform code updates through that account. If PHP has no write access to code directories, dashboard updates may be unavailable by design; that is safer than silently allowing a compromised plugin process to replace executable code.
Automatic updates
WordPress’s documented automatic-update behavior performs file operations as the user who owns the files and then sets files to 0644 and directories to 0755. If you repeatedly change ownership to the web-server user, later SSH/SFTP maintenance by the site owner can fail. Align the owner with the account that is supposed to perform updates instead of applying recurring blanket chown commands.
Handle cache, temporary, and generated-content directories
Caching, image-processing, backup, and other extensions may need write access to their own subdirectories. Read the extension’s documented path and grant access there first. A cache directory can often be disposable and service-owned, while executable plugin and theme files should remain under administrative control. After changing access, test cache creation, cache clearing, and a normal deployment so stale ownership does not accumulate.

Mode 777 lets the owner, group, and every other local user read, write, and traverse a directory or file. WordPress warns that world-writable files allow a compromised process or another account to alter site content. In the worst case, an attacker can take control of the blog or read database credentials from configuration files.

When a write fails, diagnose the owner, group membership, directory traversal, ACLs, SELinux or other mandatory controls, and container mappings. Removing a security boundary may hide the symptom while greatly increasing the impact of a future vulnerability.
When permissions look correct but writes still fail
SELinux
On Red Hat-family systems, inspect audit denials and the SELinux context for the target path. Correct the policy or label using your distribution’s documented procedure; do not compensate by recursively changing modes to permissive values.

ACLs and group membership
Use ACL inspection when a file has an unexpected effective permission. Verify that the PHP account is actually in the group shown by the directory and that new files inherit the intended group and umask.
Containers and mounted volumes
The numeric user inside a container may not map to the host account you see in ls. Check the container image, volume mount, and runtime user before changing host ownership. A host-side chown can be overwritten when the container is recreated.
Read-only or provider-managed filesystems
A read-only mount, immutable attribute, or managed-host policy can produce a denial even with apparently suitable modes. Ask the provider or inspect mount and policy status before making broad changes.
Managed hosting: ask before changing server ownership
WordPress advises managed-hosting customers to consult the provider’s documentation or support before changing server configuration. Hosts can use separate PHP pools, containers, ACLs, or security policies, and support staff may have a safe ownership-reset procedure. Tell support the exact failing path, operation, timestamp, and current owner/group output. Request the narrowest change that restores the feature and preserves your normal update method.

- Is the proposed change the smallest one that works? Avoid recursive whole-tree ownership changes and never use
777as a default.
