Flappy Bird returned in a new version from The Flappy Bird Foundation, but original creator Dong Nguyen says he was not involved. The crypto story also needs a timeline: a 2024 report found Solana and Web3 references on the project’s site, while the developer later said its Android release had no Web3 elements.
Is Flappy Bird back?
Yes. The Flappy Bird Foundation announced a revival in September 2024, saying it had acquired rights from Gametech Holdings. That is the Foundation’s account of its rights; it does not mean Nguyen created or endorsed the new game. TechCrunch reported the announcement and Nguyen’s response.
Is the new Flappy Bird the original game?
No. The revival is a separate release from the Foundation, not a return of the original app made by Nguyen. Nguyen said he had nothing to do with the revival and “did not sell anything.” He removed the original game in February 2014, saying, “I cannot take this anymore.” GameSpot reproduced his fuller explanation: “I think it has become a problem. To solve that problem, it’s best to take down Flappy Bird. It’s gone forever.” GameSpot’s report covers the original game’s removal and the later Android launch.
Is Dong Nguyen involved?
No. Nguyen publicly disavowed involvement in the revival. The Foundation’s claim to have acquired rights and Nguyen’s statement that he did not sell anything are separate claims; neither should be treated as evidence that he helped make the new game.

Does the new Flappy Bird use crypto?
The answer depends on which point in the project’s timeline you mean. In September 2024, TechCrunch reported that researcher Varun Biniwale found a hidden page on the Foundation’s website referring to Solana and Web3. The report said it was unclear whether those references described planned features or abandoned plans. Nguyen responded, “I also don’t support crypto.”
For the later Android launch, GameSpot reported on April 30, 2025, that the developer said the game had “no Web3 elements.” That is a statement about the release as reported at that time; it does not establish the technical or commercial properties of every later version.
