The catch is that reviewers have disagreed about how well those pieces come together. Some found the combat fast and spectacular; others thought it felt stiff or unrefined. That tension makes the game more interesting than a simple verdict of “good Soulslike” or “bad Soulslike”—but its distinctive ingredients do not always add up to a distinctive whole.
What is Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn?
Developed by A44 Games and published by Kepler Interactive, Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn launched on July 17, 2024, according to its Steam listing. It follows Coalition soldier Nor Vanek and Enki, a mysterious fox-like companion, as they face gods and the dead in a world threatened by the supernatural. The game is listed for PS5 and PC on Steam.

A44 describes it as a Souls-like action RPG, and its PlayStation listing and official site foreground a blend of melee, gunpowder, magic and rapid movement. There are skill trees, equipment and weapon upgrades, side quests and collectibles, alongside environments that include deserts, ruins and cities. These mechanics establish the game’s ambitions; they do not, by themselves, establish how satisfying its combat or story will feel.
How does Flintlock’s combat work?
The central idea is to move between close-range attacks, gunpowder strikes and magic rather than rely on a single weapon or rhythm. Enki contributes supernatural abilities, while mobility is part of the combat pitch: A44 highlights portals and rapid traversal, and PC Gamer describes double jumps and air dashes. Together, those systems promise encounters that can shift from grounded melee to aerial movement and ranged attacks.

A44’s official site calls the result “dynamic and explosive combat.” The more revealing question is whether the separate tools feel responsive, varied and rewarding when used together. On that point, reviews diverged.
Is the combat fun, or does it feel unrefined?
There is a plausible source for both reactions. Fast movement and a mix of attack types can make fights feel lively, and GameSpot’s review summary praised the game’s hyper-mobile combat and traversal. PC Gamer’s Abbie Stone, however, found the combat slightly stiff and argued that its spectacle could mask limitations in polish and versatility. PCGamesN likewise praised the original gunpowder fantasy but called the combat unrefined.
That disagreement is not necessarily a contradiction: speed and spectacle can make an encounter exciting without making the underlying system feel especially precise or deep. Players drawn to movement, dramatic attacks and a hybrid of melee, firearms and magic may find the mix engaging. Those who want consistently crisp responses, a highly versatile combat system or a strong sense of refinement may be more sensitive to the shortcomings reviewers identified.
Does Flintlock have its own identity?
Its ingredients are unusual in combination: a flintlock-era war, a soldier protagonist, a conflict with gods and a fox-like supernatural companion. The question is whether those elements reinforce one another strongly enough to give the adventure a memorable voice, rather than merely making its premise sound distinctive.

PC Gamer’s review judged the story dull and familiar despite that setup. PCGamesN saw an original gunpowder fantasy, but felt its potential was held back by combat that needed refinement. Those are critical assessments, not proof that every player will find the world or story forgettable. They do point to the distinction between a novel premise and a cohesive identity: the setting, narrative, enemies and mechanics need to feel like parts of the same creative vision.

What did reviewers and players think?
The available figures show a mixed critical picture and a more positive, time-sensitive Steam snapshot—not a definitive consensus.
| Source | Rating or assessment | What it signals |
|---|---|---|
| PC Gamer, Abbie Stone, July 2024 | 60/100 | Called it serviceable but insufficiently distinctive, citing stiff combat and a familiar-feeling story. |
| PCGamesN, July 2024 | 7/10 | Praised the semi-open world and original gunpowder fantasy while criticizing unrefined combat. |
| Steam listing, retrieved in 2026 | 75% positive from 1,352 all-time user reviews; 88% positive from 26 recent reviews | A positive user-review snapshot. The recent sample is small, and both figures can change over time. |
These ratings come from different reviewers and a changing user-review pool, so they are useful context rather than a single verdict. The Steam figures are not a critic aggregate, and the small recent sample should not be treated as a stable measure of current opinion.
Is Flintlock a Soulslike?
Yes, in the broad sense that its official descriptions place it in the Souls-like or Souls-lite action RPG tradition. A44 also emphasizes rapid mobility, while Xbox Wire described a flexible, snappy blend that might appeal to players of more action-oriented series. That context helps explain why the game may feel more mobile than some genre expectations; it does not make Flintlock equivalent to any particular franchise.

The game is a stronger prospect if its particular mix sounds appealing than if you are looking for an especially polished or unmistakably original take on the genre. Before choosing it, weigh the elements that matter most to you:
- Combat feel: Do you value spectacle and momentum more than consistently precise, deeply versatile encounters?
- Movement: Does rapid traversal and aerial mobility appeal as much as the melee-and-magic mix?
- World and enemies: Are the supernatural premise and flintlock setting enough to draw you in, or do you need a more distinctive world identity?
- Story: Are you comfortable with a familiar-feeling narrative if the action and setting hold your interest?
- Refinement: How much does unpolished combat weigh against an original premise?
