Here, “flying casino” means gambling aboard an aircraft; in a Thailand study, the same phrase refers to a gambling venue that moves between locations.
What has actually flown as a casino?
The reported examples are not all the same: one airline tested physical slot machines, another offered screen-based gambling, and a private-aircraft project involved table games. Historical accounts describe these as brief experiments or private conversions, not a continuing commercial service.
Singapore Airlines: a reported slot-machine trial
A Las Vegas Advisor retrospective reports that Singapore Airlines introduced lightweight slot machines on a Singapore–San Francisco route in 1981. The experiment reportedly lasted two months; the machines were removed after operational difficulties. This is historical secondary reporting, rather than an airline record published with the account. Las Vegas Advisor’s retrospective
Swissair: gambling on seat-back screens
The same retrospective says Swissair added a screen-based gambling feature in the 1990s. That was different from installing mechanical slot machines or hosting live table games. The available account does not establish that the feature became a lasting service.

Las Vegas Sands: a private L1011 casino project
The retrospective says that in 2007 Las Vegas Sands CEO Sheldon Adelson hired Edése Doret Industrial Design to customize a Lockheed L1011-500 as a private aircraft casino, with baccarat tables and a private game room. It does not establish how many aircraft were converted or whether one remained in operation. Its speculation about continued use is not proof of current service.
Which flying-casino proposals never became ordinary flights?
The proposed Airbus A380 casino
In 2008, Rediff reported that Airbus had spoken with potential Asian buyers about converting an A380 into a casino. The story described a possible delivery window only if a buyer placed an order; it did not report that an aircraft was completed. François Chazelle, then head of Airbus’s executive and private aviation division, said: “Discussions are under way, and not just with casino operators.” Rediff’s 2008 report

A 2021 AIRLIVE report described an AirJet Designs casino interior concept for a Boeing 777. It characterized the design as intended for private use, not commercial flights. Why “flying casino” does not always mean a casino on a plane
In research about gambling in Thailand, “home/flying casino” means a local gambling venue that moves between locations. It is a separate regional use of the phrase, not an aircraft casino. Thailand gambling study
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is gambling on an aircraft legal?
There is no sound basis for a universal yes-or-no answer from these historical examples. Rules can depend on the route, jurisdictions involved, aircraft and operator, and the kind of gaming device. APEX summarizes U.S. federal law as prohibiting an air carrier or foreign air carrier from installing, transporting, operating, or permitting use of a gambling device aboard an aircraft in foreign air transportation. That summary is not a complete legal review; anyone assessing a real operation would need to consult current governing law and relevant aviation and gaming authorities for the specific jurisdictions and route. The historical reporting also distinguishes mechanical or electric devices from table games, but it does not establish that table games are categorically legal, or that aircraft gambling is treated the same everywhere.
