If Windows reports that fmod_event_net64.dll is missing, the affected game or application usually has an incomplete, quarantined, damaged, or mismatched file set. fmod_event_net64.dll is normally supplied by the program that installed it, so repairing that program is safer and more effective than downloading an individual DLL.
Start with this short checklist:
- Note the exact program or game that fails.
- Copy the full path shown in the error.
- Check whether the message appears during startup, after an update, or only when launching a mod or alternate executable.
- Determine whether the affected program is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Check whether the file exists in the program’s own folder.
- Check Windows Security protection history before restoring or reinstalling anything.
The fastest solution is usually to verify or repair the game files through its launcher. If that does not restore the file, reinstall the affected game or application from its original trusted installer.

What fmod_event_net64.dll is
fmod_event_net64.dll is a native Windows component from the legacy FMOD Ex Net Event System. It is used by some older games and applications that included FMOD Ex audio middleware.
Recommended Free Tools
It is not:
- A Windows system file
- A general Microsoft runtime
- A .NET assembly
- A graphics driver
- A DirectX component
- A file that should normally be placed in
C:\Windows\System32 - A file that should be registered with
regsvr32
The component can be found in older games such as Magic 2014, Shadow Warrior 2, Endless Legend, and other titles that shipped with FMOD Ex. The exact file set depends on the game and its build.

A typical installation may contain several related FMOD files, including:
fmod_event_net64.dllfmod_event64.dllfmodex64.dll
These names describe different components. Replacing one with another will not repair the error.
The 64 suffix indicates that fmod_event_net64.dll is the 64-bit version. A 32-bit build normally uses fmod_event_net.dll instead. This distinction applies even when Windows itself is 64-bit, because 64-bit Windows can run both 64-bit and 32-bit applications.
What the error message actually means
You may see one of several messages:
- “The program can’t start because fmod_event_net64.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because fmod_event_net64.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading fmod_event_net64.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “fmod_event_net64.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “Fallback handler could not load library … fmod_event_net64.dll”
These messages do not all indicate the same problem.
If the file is absent, the installation is incomplete or something removed the file. If the file is present but Windows says that the specified module could not be found, a dependency of that DLL may be missing. A wrong-architecture DLL, a damaged file, or a blocked file can produce similar results.
A Unity or Mono log may also show a fallback-handler message alongside a separate permissions or access-denied error. In that situation, the DLL line may be secondary. Read the complete log instead of assuming that the named file is the only problem.
Fix 1: Verify the game or application files
This is the first fix to try because it restores the complete matching file set, not just one DLL.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Steam games
- Restart Steam.
- Open the Steam Library.
- Right-click the affected game.
- Select Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish.
- Restart Steam and launch the game again.
Steam may download the missing FMOD files or replace files that do not match the installed build. It may also report that no problems were found. If the game still fails after a successful verification, continue with the checks below.
Other launchers
Look for an option with a name such as:
- Verify
- Verify files
- Repair
- Scan and repair
- Validate installation
- Manage installation
The location varies by launcher. It is usually available from the game’s library entry or from a three-dot menu beside the game name.
Do not verify a shortcut alone. Open the launcher that manages the actual installation. If the game was installed through a publisher launcher, use that launcher rather than relying on Steam or a desktop shortcut.
What success looks like
The repair worked if:
- The launcher reports that files were repaired or reacquired.
- The file appears in the original game directory.
- The game reaches its menu without the DLL error.
- A new error names a different missing component, which indicates that the first missing file was restored but the installation has additional damage.
If verification repeatedly reports that files are missing, check antivirus history before launching the game again. Security software may remove the same file immediately after the launcher restores it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a game DLL after installation, an update, or a scan. A missing file that appeared shortly after a security alert is especially suspicious for this cause.
Check Protection History
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open any detection that points to the affected game folder.
- Record the detected path and action.
Do not restore a file merely because its name matches the error. Confirm that:
- The path belongs to the legitimate game installation.
- The game came from a trusted installer or launcher.
- The file was not placed there by a mod, unofficial repack, crack, or unknown executable.
- The detection is consistent with a false positive rather than a broader infection.
Microsoft notes that restoring a quarantined file can cause Defender to detect it again. Allowing a file should be reserved for a confident false-positive determination.
The safer recovery sequence is:
- Remove or leave the detection quarantined.
- Run the launcher’s file verification.
- Allow the official launcher to restore the file.
- Run another security scan.
- Launch the game.
Do not add the entire game drive or a broad C:\Games folder to antivirus exclusions. If the file is repeatedly detected, reinstall the game from its official launcher or original installer and investigate the detection with the antivirus vendor.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

If an unofficial repack or modified executable is involved, restore the original game files first. A security warning may be detecting the modified package rather than the genuine FMOD component.
Fix 3: Reinstall the affected program
Reinstall the game or application when verification cannot restore the file or when the installation has been manually moved, modified, or partially deleted.
Before uninstalling, check whether the game stores saved games in a separate Documents or AppData folder. Copy saves only if you understand where they are stored and whether the game supports cloud synchronization.
Then:
- Close the game and its launcher.
- Uninstall the affected program from Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the program using its original launcher or trusted installation media.
- Allow the installation to finish without manually moving files.
- Run the game before installing mods.
- Add modifications one at a time after confirming that the unmodified game works.
A clean reinstall is more reliable than copying only fmod_event_net64.dll. The game may require matching versions of fmod_event64.dll, fmodex64.dll, configuration files, banks, and other native dependencies.

Fix 4: Confirm the correct architecture
A 64-bit DLL cannot be loaded by a 32-bit process, and a 32-bit DLL cannot be loaded by a 64-bit process. Microsoft documents the compatibility rules for 32-bit applications on 64-bit Windows in its Windows architecture guidance.
Use this basic mapping:
| Program build | Expected FMOD Net Event file |
|---|---|
| 64-bit program | fmod_event_net64.dll |
| 32-bit program | fmod_event_net.dll |
Do not copy the 64-bit file into a 32-bit game folder. Do not rename the file to remove 64. The filename and binary architecture must match.
How to check the program architecture
There may not be an architecture label in the launcher, but these clues help:

- A dependency-analysis utility can inspect the executable and show whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Task Manager may show
32-bitbeside a running 32-bit process on some Windows versions.
If the error occurs only when selecting a 32-bit launch mode, check for fmod_event_net.dll, not fmod_event_net64.dll. Restore the entire matching 32-bit file set through the launcher.
If the error occurs only in the 64-bit mode, restore the 64-bit files and check that the launcher did not install an incomplete optional component.
Fix 5: Check whether the file exists in the expected folder
The normal location is the affected program’s executable, binary, or engine directory. Application-local DLL deployment helps keep one program’s runtime files separate from another program’s files. Windows DLL loading behavior is described in Microsoft’s DLL search order documentation.
To find the actual installation folder:
- Open the game launcher.
- Open the game’s properties or manage menu.
- Look for Browse local files, Open installation folder, or an equivalent command.
- Search that folder for
fmod_event_net64.dll. - Check nearby folders such as
Binaries,x64,Win64, or an engine directory.
If the file is absent, use verification or reinstall the program.
If the file exists in the game folder but the error remains, do not immediately download another copy. Continue with the dependency and architecture checks.
If the file exists only in C:\Windows\System32 or C:\Windows\SysWOW64, that is not proof that the game can use it. A game normally expects its own matching application-local files. A copy in a Windows system folder may be misplaced, stale, or unrelated.
Fix 6: Investigate a missing dependency
“Specified module could not be found” can mean that Windows found fmod_event_net64.dll but could not load another DLL that it needs.
This commonly happens when:
- The game’s Visual C++ runtime is missing.
- Another FMOD file was removed.
- The file belongs to the wrong build.
- A dependent DLL is the wrong architecture.
- An antivirus product removed a neighboring file.
- The installation was copied from another computer incompletely.
Restore the whole application directory first. If the error continues, inspect the executable and DLL dependency tree with a reputable dependency-analysis utility. Look for missing files marked as unresolved and check their architecture.

Avoid installing a collection of unrelated runtime packages just because a DLL error appears.
Visual C++ Redistributable
The Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable supplies Microsoft runtime components used by some native applications. It does not supply fmod_event_net64.dll.
Install it only when:
- The game includes a matching installer in a
_CommonRedistorRedistfolder. - The game documentation names it.
- The error identifies an MSVC runtime file.
- Dependency inspection identifies a missing Microsoft runtime.
Microsoft states that the redistributable architecture must match the application architecture. Use the official Microsoft latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.
For a 64-bit game, the x64 package may be required. For a 32-bit game running on 64-bit Windows, the x86 package may be required. Older applications can also need older redistributable releases that remain installed side by side.
After installing the identified package:
- Restart Windows.
- Run the launcher’s file verification again.
- Start the game.
- If the error is unchanged, the missing FMOD file or another application file remains the more likely problem.
Fix 7: Check the game’s bundled redistributables
Some older games include installers in folders named _CommonRedist, Redist, Support, or Prerequisites.
To check:
- Open the game’s installation folder.
- Look for
_CommonRedist,Redist,Support, orPrerequisites. - Open subfolders for Visual C++, DirectX, or other required components.
- Run only installers supplied with the legitimate game installation.
- Restart Windows.
- Verify the game files again.
These packages may repair a game’s supporting runtime, but they will not replace the game’s own FMOD DLL with a generic download.
If the bundled installer fails, note its exact error. Do not delete random runtime folders or use registry-cleaning software.
Fix 8: Repair Windows components only when other programs are affected
SFC and DISM repair Windows components. They normally do not recreate an application-private FMOD DLL that belongs in a game directory.
Use them when:
- Several unrelated programs report Windows DLL failures.
- Windows features are malfunctioning.
- Windows Update is broken.
- The error names a Microsoft system file.
- The computer has broader signs of system corruption.
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
Run DISM first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands complete.
Possible results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows protected files appear intact.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test the affected program.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Review the CBS log and continue Windows repair troubleshooting.
- DISM reports that the source files could not be found: Windows may need repair media, updates, or a different servicing step.
Do not expect SFC to restore fmod_event_net64.dll to a game directory. If the Windows repair succeeds but the game still reports the same error, return to launcher verification or reinstall the game.

Fix 9: Check DirectX, .NET, and Windows Features only if the game requires them
fmod_event_net64.dll is a native FMOD runtime. Installing DirectX or .NET does not directly install this file.
Check these components only when the game separately asks for them.
Enable legacy Windows features
- Press Win+R.
- Type
optionalfeatures. - Press Enter.
- Review .NET Framework 3.5, if the game specifically requires it.
- Review Legacy Components → DirectPlay, if the game specifically requires DirectPlay.
- Select the required feature.
- Select OK.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
Do not enable every feature as a general repair. If the game does not mention .NET 3.5 or DirectPlay, these components are unlikely to resolve an FMOD DLL load failure.
For a legacy game that includes its own DirectX installer, run the installer from the game’s trusted Redist or support folder. Do not replace FMOD files with DirectX files.
Fix 10: Update or reinstall drivers only when there is a related symptom
Display and audio drivers are not the normal cause of a missing fmod_event_net64.dll. Investigate drivers when the game also shows:
- Display driver crashes
- Missing audio devices
- Device Manager warning icons
- No sound across multiple applications
- Graphics initialization failures
- A driver-specific error in the game log
To check Device Manager:
- Press Win+X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters for graphics devices.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers for audio devices.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Select Properties and review the General and Driver tabs.
- Use Update driver or install the current driver supplied by the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows.
If the problem began immediately after a driver update, open the device’s Driver tab and check whether Roll Back Driver is available.
Manually hunting through multiple hardware sites and guessing which of dozens of drivers is stale can take longer than the actual repair. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show exactly which drivers it identifies; its free scan is for diagnosis, while driver installation is performed by the full version, and a driver change is not a substitute for repairing the game installation.
If Device Manager shows no related problem and only one game reports fmod_event_net64.dll, return to the game files rather than changing drivers.
Fix 11: Check permissions and user-profile problems
A game may report a DLL loading failure when it cannot create configuration files, diagnostics, or other data required during startup.
Check the complete game log for messages such as:
- Access denied
- Cannot write to Documents
- Cannot create configuration file
- Cannot create crash dump
- Failed to write diagnostics
- Blocked folder access
Try these steps:
- Close the game.
- Right-click the game executable or launcher.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Temporarily select Run this program as an administrator.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Launch the game once.
If this works, the underlying issue is likely permissions or a protected user-data folder. Do not leave administrator mode enabled permanently without a reason. Instead, check the game’s Documents, AppData, or save-game folder permissions.

Review its alerts before adding an exclusion. Exclude only a trusted application when you understand exactly what it needs to write.
You can also test with a new local Windows user account. If the game works there, the original profile, permissions, or configuration files may be damaged.
Fix 12: Remove mods and restore the original files
A mod can replace an executable, change the expected FMOD directory, or introduce a 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch.
If the error started after installing a mod:
- Disable or uninstall the mod.
- Restore the original executable and game files.
- Run launcher verification.
- Launch the unmodified game.
- Reinstall the mod only after the original game works.
Do not copy FMOD files from another game to satisfy a mod. Two games may use the same filename while requiring different builds and surrounding libraries.
This also applies to unofficial repacks, manually copied installations, and files transferred from another computer. The same filename does not guarantee the same architecture, dependencies, or compatibility.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 13: Use System Restore only for a wider Windows change
System Restore is relevant if the DLL problem began after a broader system change and several applications are affected. It is not the normal way to restore a game file.
To open it:
- Press Win+R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Select Finish.
You can also open Control Panel → Recovery → Open System Restore.
System Restore rolls back system files, settings, drivers, and installed programs. It normally does not remove personal documents, but review the affected-program list before confirming.
Recommended Free Tools
If no restore point exists, continue with launcher repair, reinstalling the affected program, and Windows component repair where appropriate.
Do not download this DLL from a random website
Searching for the filename can lead to generic DLL download pages offering an individual replacement. That is risky because the file may:
- Contain malware
- Belong to a different FMOD build
- Have the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- Be modified or unsigned
- Require dependencies that are still missing
- Fix the visible error while leaving the installation corrupted
It can also create a version mismatch with fmod_event64.dll, fmodex64.dll, or other game files.

Why regsvr32 is the wrong fix
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose registration interfaces such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft describes its intended use in the regsvr32 command documentation.
fmod_event_net64.dll is a runtime library loaded by the game. It is not known as a COM or ActiveX registration server. The game uses native FMOD Net Event functions rather than Windows DLL registration.
Do not run:
regsvr32 fmod_event_net64.dll
If regsvr32 reports that an entry point is missing, that does not prove the file is damaged. It usually means the DLL was never designed to be registered.
What to do when verification reports no problems
If the launcher says that all files are valid but the error remains, work through this order:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Confirm that the launcher and the failing shortcut point to the same installation.
- Check whether the game has multiple library folders or installations.
- Check Windows Security Protection History.
- Confirm whether the file is actually present in the expected folder.
- Check whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Look for a separate 32-bit executable or beta branch.
- Remove mods and verify again.
- Inspect dependencies if the file exists.
- Reinstall the game from the original launcher.
- Review the complete game log for permissions or profile errors.
A successful verification does not always mean that the correct executable is being launched. A desktop shortcut may point to an old folder, a mod loader may use a different executable, or a game may have both 32-bit and 64-bit launch options.
What to do if the file is repeatedly quarantined
Do not create a blanket antivirus exclusion.
Instead:
- Note the exact detection name and file path.
- Remove unofficial mods or repacks.
- Uninstall the game if the installation is questionable.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall from the original launcher or trusted installer.
- Update Windows Security definitions.
- Run a full scan.
- Verify the game files again.
- Contact the antivirus vendor if the clean original file continues to be detected.
Do not assume that the file is malicious solely because one scan detected it. Do not assume that it is safe solely because its filename or metadata mentions FMOD. The source, path, signature, surrounding files, and detection details all matter.
Frequently asked questions
Is fmod_event_net64.dll a Windows file?
No. It should be treated as an application-private FMOD Ex runtime supplied with a game or older application.
Which games use it?
It has appeared with older FMOD Ex games, including Magic 2014, Shadow Warrior 2, and Endless Legend. Other older titles may contain it as well. The filename alone does not identify the program, so use the full path and recent launcher activity.
What does the 64 mean?
It identifies the 64-bit variant. A 32-bit build generally uses fmod_event_net.dll. Windows being 64-bit does not mean every game installation uses the 64-bit DLL.
Is fmod_event_net64.dll the same as fmod_event64.dll?
No. They are different FMOD components. fmod_event_net64.dll belongs to the Net Event portion of the runtime, while fmod_event64.dll is another FMOD Event System component.
Is it the same as fmodex64.dll?
No. fmodex64.dll is another FMOD library. These files may be shipped together, but they cannot be substituted for one another.
Should I install Visual C++ Redistributable?
Only if the game, its bundled installer, or dependency inspection identifies a missing Microsoft runtime. Visual C++ Redistributable does not install fmod_event_net64.dll.

Should I run regsvr32?
No. This is a runtime DLL, not a registration-oriented COM or ActiveX component.
Can I copy the file from another game?
No. A file with the same name may belong to a different FMOD build, architecture, or dependency set. Restore the file through the affected game’s own launcher or installer.
What if the file exists but Windows says it is missing?
Check the program architecture and dependencies. “Specified module could not be found” can refer to a dependency that Windows could not load, not necessarily the named DLL itself.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What if only the 32-bit launch mode fails?
Look for the matching fmod_event_net.dll file and restore the complete 32-bit installation. Do not copy fmod_event_net64.dll into the 32-bit directory.
Will SFC restore this file?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows components, not ordinary game files. Use launcher verification or reinstall the affected game.
Should the file be in System32?
Normally no. It should remain in the game or application directory that needs it.
What information should I provide when asking for support?
Include:
- The exact error text
- The affected game or application
- The installed version or launcher branch, if shown
- The full path in the error
- Whether
fmod_event_net64.dllexists in that folder - The file’s Properties → Details information

- The launcher’s verification result
- Windows Security Protection History results
- Whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether the error began after an update, mod installation, move, or antivirus scan
