“The program can’t start because fobj601.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.”

fobj601.dll is an old ABBYY application file, not a Windows component. The safest fix is to identify the ABBYY program that needs it and repair or reinstall that exact program.

Which fix applies to you

Use this list before downloading anything or copying files:

  • The error names FineReader or an old scanner application: Repair or reinstall the matching ABBYY FineReader edition, usually FineReader 5.0 Sprint or Sprint Plus.
  • The error appears after antivirus activity: Check Windows Security Protection history before restoring anything.
  • The file exists but the program still fails: A dependent DLL may be missing, or the application may be the wrong architecture. Reinstall the complete program rather than replacing one file.
  • You copied the DLL into System32 or SysWOW64: Remove that copy if it did not come from the program’s original installer, then reinstall the application into its normal directory.
  • Only Windows components are failing: Use DISM and SFC. These tools do not normally restore third-party ABBYY files.
  • You no longer use the old ABBYY software: Uninstall it and remove its stale shortcut or startup entry instead of preserving an obsolete DLL.

What fobj601.dll is

The internal description for fobj601.dll is FineObjects Classes Library. Reported file metadata identifies it as an ABBYY (BIT Software) library, version 6.0.1.0, for 32-bit Windows, with a size of approximately 1.18 MB.

Those version, architecture, size, and publisher details come from independent file catalogs rather than a current ABBYY binary manifest. Treat them as useful identification clues, not as a reason to download a replacement from a catalog.

The strongest historical association is ABBYY FineReader 5.0 Sprint, including Sprint editions bundled with scanners and multifunction devices. FineReader 5.0 Sprint was distributed as OCR software with scanner products. Sprint Plus and other old ABBYY products may also be involved, but FineReader 5.0 Sprint is the best-supported match rather than proof that it was the only program using the file.

Old ABBYY Lingvo incidents also show lingvo32.exe loading version 6.0.1.0 of fobj601.dll. That is historical evidence, not confirmation that every Lingvo installation included this library.

ABBYY lists FineReader 7.0 and earlier among its unsupported products. That includes the FineReader generation most strongly associated with this file, so a current FineReader PDF installer should not be treated as a direct replacement for an old fobj601.dll.

Identify the program that is calling the file

Do not guess based only on the DLL name. Find the application that is actually failing.

Check the error window

Look at the title bar and the text surrounding the error. It may identify:

  • finereader.exe
  • an ABBYY scanner or OCR utility
  • lingvo32.exe
  • a scanner manufacturer’s bundled launcher

Write down the executable name before closing the message.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the shortcut target

  1. Right-click the shortcut that produces the error.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Shortcut tab.
  4. Read the Target field and Start in field.
  5. Note the folder containing the executable.

The directory is important. A valid application DLL normally sits with the program that uses it, not in a general Windows system folder.

Search common program folders

Open PowerShell and run:

Get-ChildItem -Path "$env:ProgramFiles","${env:ProgramFiles(x86)}" `
  -Filter fobj601.dll -Recurse -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue

This searches the standard 64-bit and 32-bit program directories. If it returns a path, compare that path with the failing executable.

A result under Program Files (x86) is consistent with a 32-bit legacy application. A file found in a random temporary folder, download folder, or unrelated application directory should not automatically be trusted.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the ABBYY application

This is the most likely solution because fobj601.dll is an application-private ABBYY library.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Try Windows repair first

For a program registered with Windows:

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Find the ABBYY program or the scanner software that bundled it.
  5. Select the three-dot menu.
  6. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  7. Select Repair.

The repair is successful if the program starts without the fobj601.dll message. If there is no Repair option, continue with the traditional Control Panel method.

Repair a traditional desktop installation

  1. Press Windows+R.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Find ABBYY FineReader, FineReader Sprint, Sprint Plus, Lingvo, or the scanner package that installed the software.
  5. Right-click it.
  6. Choose Repair or Change, if available.
  7. Follow the installer prompts.
  8. Restart Windows and test the application.

A successful repair restores the DLL and its companion files to the application’s original directory. It also has a better chance of restoring required registry entries and resources than copying one file manually.

Reinstall from original media

If repair fails:

  1. Back up documents and OCR projects created with the old application.
  2. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Uninstall the damaged ABBYY program.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Install the same product and edition from its original CD, scanner bundle, verified backup, or genuine ABBYY distribution package.
  6. Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
  7. Restart Windows again.
  8. Test the original shortcut.

For an OEM edition, use the installer supplied with the scanner or multifunction device when possible. Do not substitute a different FineReader edition merely because its name looks similar.

If you cannot find the original installer and the application is no longer supported, the practical choice may be to remove the obsolete program. A current ABBYY FineReader PDF installation is a different product and is not a drop-in source for this legacy DLL.

Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software can remove or quarantine an old DLL because legacy files may be uncommon or lack modern signing information. A false positive is possible, but an antivirus detection must not be dismissed automatically.

  1. Open Start and search for Windows Security.
  2. Open Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Look for an event involving fobj601.dll or the ABBYY installation folder.
  5. Read the detection name and affected path.
  6. If the file came from the original installer or a verified backup, review the detection with your security administrator or antivirus vendor.
  7. Prefer reinstalling from trusted media rather than restoring an isolated DLL.
  8. Run a full scan before launching the repaired application.

Do not restore a file merely because doing so makes the error disappear. If the DLL was obtained from an unknown source, delete it and scan the system.

Fix 3: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility

The reported fobj601.dll metadata identifies it as a 32-bit Win32 library. A 32-bit ABBYY executable can normally load a 32-bit library from its application directory. A native 64-bit executable cannot load a 32-bit DLL.

This distinction can produce an error about an incorrect format rather than a simple missing-file message.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the matching application architecture:

  • Install the original 32-bit ABBYY application with its original 32-bit files.
  • Do not place a supposed x64 copy beside a 32-bit program.
  • Do not replace the file with a similarly named DLL from another product.
  • If the error says the module has an incorrect format, reinstall the matching application instead of trying random copies.

A complete reinstall is safer because the executable, DLLs, language resources, and supporting libraries were designed to work together.

Fix 4: Distinguish a missing DLL from a missing dependency

Windows may report that the specified module could not be found even when fobj601.dll is present. In that situation, the missing item may be a dependency required by fobj601.dll or by the ABBYY executable.

This is why manually copying the named file often fails.

Check the application folder for fobj601.dll. If it exists:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm that it belongs to the same ABBYY installation.
  2. Do not move it to another folder.
  3. Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64.
  4. Run the ABBYY repair option, or uninstall and reinstall the complete product.
  5. Recheck the antivirus history.
  6. Test the application again.

Windows searches the application directory and other locations according to its DLL search rules. Keeping an application’s private libraries with its executable is normally safer than placing them in a shared system directory.

Why copying to System32 is usually wrong

System32 and SysWOW64 are not general-purpose storage locations for missing application files.

Copying fobj601.dll there can:

  • leave the ABBYY installation incomplete
  • place the wrong version in a location used by other software
  • create a DLL search or loading conflict
  • hide the real missing dependency
  • introduce an unverified file into a trusted system directory

On 64-bit Windows, the directory names can also be confusing: System32 is generally used for 64-bit system components, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system components. Neither directory is the normal home for this ABBYY library.

Only restore the DLL manually when the source is the same original installer or a verified backup, and restore it to the original ABBYY application directory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why regsvr32 normally does not fix it

regsvr32 is used for DLLs that provide a self-registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. There is no evidence that fobj601.dll is a self-registering COM or ActiveX component.

Running this command is therefore not a normal repair:

regsvr32 fobj601.dll

It may produce an entry-point error, and it cannot restore a missing file or its dependencies. Do not register the DLL unless documentation for the exact ABBYY product explicitly requires it.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged

SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They do not normally restore a third-party ABBYY library.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use them when other Windows features are also failing, system files are reporting corruption, or Windows has broader stability problems.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click it.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Test the ABBYY program.

Run DISM before SFC. If both commands complete without repairing the ABBYY error, return to the ABBYY repair or reinstall procedure.

If you repeatedly hunt through Windows components and cannot tell what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can provide a free scan showing reported problems; repair is performed by the full version, but reinstalling the ABBYY program remains the definitive fix for this application-specific DLL.

Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change

System Restore is relevant only when the failure began after a recent installation, cleanup operation, update, or other system change and a suitable restore point exists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows+R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point dated before the fobj601.dll error began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs, if available.
  5. Review the changes.
  6. Select Next, then Finish.
  7. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore may roll back an application change, but it is not a substitute for reinstalling an obsolete ABBYY product. Do not use it solely to restore a DLL when the original installer is available.

Fix 7: Drivers and Windows Features are only secondary checks

A scanner driver can affect whether an old OCR application works, but reinstalling a driver is not an evidence-based way to replace fobj601.dll.

Check the driver only when the error also involves a scanner or multifunction device:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, or Printers, depending on the hardware.
  4. Right-click the affected device.
  5. Select Update driver or Uninstall device.
  6. Restart Windows if you uninstall it.
  7. Install the driver supplied by the device manufacturer.
  8. Test the ABBYY application again.

Do not install DirectX, .NET, or Visual C++ merely because a DLL error appeared. Install vc_redist.x86.exe only when the error specifically names a Microsoft runtime such as msvcp*.dll or vcruntime*.dll. The redistributable architecture must match the application.

If you are manually tracking several outdated device packages and want a scan to identify them, Outbyte Driver Updater can show reported driver issues for free; driver installation is handled by the full version, and it does not replace the need to reinstall ABBYY when fobj601.dll belongs to that program.

Windows Features are not a normal source for this file. Enable a Windows feature only when the error specifically identifies that feature or a Microsoft component, not as a general response to an ABBYY DLL failure.

Avoid random DLL download sites

Do not download fobj601.dll from an unknown DLL library, forum attachment, software mirror, or search result.

A downloaded copy may have:

  • the wrong version
  • the wrong architecture
  • missing companion files
  • altered or malicious contents
  • a name copied into the wrong application directory

It may also make the error change without fixing the damaged installation. The safe sources are the original ABBYY or scanner OEM installer, a verified backup made from that installation, or a supported repair package for the exact product.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If nothing works

Collect this information before asking for help:

  • The complete error text
  • The executable name shown by the error or shortcut
  • The full path to that executable
  • The full path to any fobj601.dll found on the computer
  • Your Windows version
  • The ABBYY or scanner application version
  • Whether antivirus quarantine shows the file
  • Whether the failure began after an uninstall, cleanup, update, or restore

Also record whether the error says missing, specified module could not be found, or incorrect format. Those messages can point to different problems: a missing application file, a missing dependency, or a 32-bit/64-bit mismatch.

FAQ

Is fobj601.dll a Windows system file?

No. It is an ABBYY application library called FineObjects Classes Library. It should not normally be installed in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

Which program most likely installed it?

The strongest association is ABBYY FineReader 5.0 Sprint, including scanner and multifunction-device OEM editions. FineReader Sprint Plus and other historical ABBYY software may also use it.

Can I fix the error by registering the DLL?

Normally no. regsvr32 is for self-registering COM or OLE libraries, and there is no evidence that this file requires registration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I install Visual C++ or .NET?

Not for fobj601.dll alone. Install a runtime only when the error explicitly names a missing Microsoft runtime or the ABBYY installer identifies that dependency.

Is the file 32-bit or 64-bit?

Reported metadata identifies version 6.0.1.0 as a 32-bit Win32 file. Use it with the matching 32-bit ABBYY application.

Can current FineReader PDF replace it?

No. A current FineReader PDF installation is a different product and is not a direct replacement for a FineReader 5-era library.

What if I no longer need the old ABBYY program?

Uninstall the program through Settings > Apps > Installed apps or Control Panel > Programs and Features. Then remove its obsolete shortcut or startup entry if one remains. This is safer than preserving an isolated legacy DLL.
