How the launch plan changed
| Stage | What Sports Interactive announced |
|---|---|
| October 10, 2024 | The studio delayed the planned launch to March 2025, saying the additional time was still needed to deliver the intended quality and experience. Source: Sports Interactive. |
| February 6, 2025 | After the further development period, the studio canceled the game rather than release it below its target standard. Source: Sports Interactive. |
Why did Sports Interactive cancel FM25?
The studio’s stated reason was that it could not bring the game to the standard it wanted in enough areas. It said many parts had met their targets, but the overall player experience and interface had not. In its words: “Whilst many areas of the game have hit our targets, the overarching player experience and interface is not where we need it to be.”
Sports Interactive said it had extensively evaluated the game, including through consumer playtesting, and concluded it remained too far from the standard it wanted to deliver. It acknowledged that it could have released the current build and addressed problems later, but said that was not the right choice. It also said delaying beyond March would have put the game too late in the football season and risked players buying two games within a short period. These are the reasons the studio gave; the announcement does not establish other causes or assign blame for the development problems.

In its October delay announcement, the studio had already described a difficult development cycle in which work was progressing more slowly than predicted. It said rushing could compromise its standards. The February cancellation followed that delay rather than a new launch date.

Sports Interactive said pre-purchases through official SEGA-approved retailers would be refunded automatically in full, with retailers handling the process. If you have a question about your refund, contact the retailer or point of purchase. The studio did not give a single refund-processing date or state that every purchase channel follows the same procedure.
SEGA’s Japanese cancellation notice likewise confirms that digital pre-purchase refunds depend on the relevant store platform’s policy. Check with the platform or seller where you placed the order for the applicable process.
Will Football Manager 24 get a 2024/25 season update?
No. Sports Interactive said it would not release an FM24 update with 2024/25 season data, because preparing one would divert critical resources from developing the next release. The studio’s announcement also says development assets from FM25 would carry forward to the next game, a point echoed in SEGA’s Japanese notice.
