There is no established universally fastest or safest route: published walkthroughs emphasize different approaches, and the evidence does not compare them across player skills, saves, or game versions. A task-based route follows the ordinary work objectives; a stealth-oriented route focuses on moving through restricted castle areas. Use the journal objective shown in your game if it differs from the steps below.

- Prefer the task-based route if you want to follow the work that opens access and use the forge courtyard as a landmark.
- Prefer stealth-oriented navigation if you are comfortable sneaking through castle corridors and stairs. Guard positions or access conditions may vary with game state.
Follow the task-based route to the tower
- Complete the initial work objective. One published route starts with carrying charcoal sacks to the marked shed, then taking a horseshoe task from Blacksmith Osina. If those tasks appear in your journal, make the horseshoe using the forge materials and anvil, show it to Osina, and deliver it to stablehand Kabat. This is a guide-described progression route, not a requirement established for every save.
- Use the forge courtyard to reorient. KCD2.org’s route recommends returning to the forge courtyard if you lose your way rather than wandering the upper passages. Treat it as a suggested landmark; follow your own map and objective markers if your layout or objective differs.
- Make your way to Captain Thomas. Quest walkthroughs place the ill captain high in the Maiden Tower. An older stealth route describes moving through castle corridors and stairs, but the exact route and guard conditions are not established as universal.
- Locate the alchemy room and Physician’s Book. Insider Gaming’s walkthrough reports that the book there explains Fever Tonic, with a chest of needed ingredients nearby; it describes the chest lock as Very Easy. Check the prompts in your game rather than assuming the same chest state or recipe in every quest state.
- Brew Fever Tonic and return to Thomas. Follow the in-game alchemy tutorial, prepare the tonic, and take it back to the captain. This is the key dependency in the route: reaching Thomas with the remedy allows him to vouch for Hans.
Manage the time pressure
Multiple walkthroughs warn that the quest has a twelve-bell deadline. That figure and the precise failure mechanics are guide-reported, not confirmed here by an official game reference. To reduce the risk of running out of time, keep moving toward Thomas and the tonic, and skip castle errands that are not required by your current journal objective.
What to expect from dialogue and optional detours
GameSpot reports that in one playthrough, a particular answer to Katherine cost Henry 30 Groschen; the guide says it could not confirm whether other answers had the same consequence. Do not treat that loss as a guaranteed result of the conversation. Optional conversations and looting can add detours, so prioritize the captain and the tonic if your objective is to finish the quest.

The work-task route gives you explicit objectives and a recognizable forge-courtyard landmark before sending you toward the tower and alchemy room. The stealth-oriented alternative may suit players who would rather navigate restricted areas directly. Neither approach is established as best for every character build, quest state, or game version; the best choice is the one that matches your active objective and comfort with stealth and locks.
