Force Gun Damage in Dead Space: What Each Version Actually Does

Yes—the Force Gun damages enemies in Dead Space. The exact result depends on which installment you are playing and whether you use the primary or alternate fire. In Dead Space 2, the official PC manual specifically describes the alternate fire ripping limbs off enemies. For the 2023 remake, Gamer Guides lists 100 damage points at base level and 170 after upgrading, while describing the upgraded gravity-well alternate fire as dealing damage over time.

The answer depends on the Dead Space installment

“The Force Gun” is not governed by one damage value across the series. The title of the question leaves the game unspecified, and the available documentation covers the versions differently. Dead Space 2 has an official manual description of a damaging alternate fire, the 2023 remake has guide-listed numerical values, and the 2008 original has an official description of dismemberment combat but no confirmed Force Gun damage number in the cited material.

Version What the cited source establishes What it does not establish
Dead Space 2 The manual calls the weapon a short-range kinetic booster and says its alternate fire is a focused force beam that can rip limbs off almost anything. A universal numeric damage value for every enemy or difficulty.
Dead Space (2023 remake) Gamer Guides reports 100 damage points at base and 170 when upgraded. It describes the primary fire as a burst of force and the alternate fire as a gravity well; the upgraded gravity well deals damage over time. Whether those guide-listed values match every difficulty, enemy state or independent test result.
Dead Space (2008 original) The official Xbox listing explains the series’ dismemberment-based combat and alternate-fire modes. An exact Force Gun damage figure.

That is why a number quoted for the remake should not be applied automatically to the original game or to Dead Space 2.

What the Dead Space 2 manual says

The weapon is more than a shove

The strongest primary-source wording in the available material comes from the Dead Space 2 PC manual. It characterizes the Force Gun as a short-range kinetic booster. That description explains its close-range, force-based identity, but it does not limit the weapon to crowd control or knockback. The manual explicitly assigns a damaging effect to the alternate fire.

Alternate fire can remove limbs

In the Weapons section, the manual says: Use the alt-fire to activate a focused force beam that can rip the limbs off almost anything. Limb removal is a direct combat effect in a game built around dismemberment. It therefore answers the literal question for Dead Space 2: the Force Gun does damage, and its alternate fire can produce the kind of injury the game uses to disable enemies.

The wording also matters because it describes the alternate fire as a focused beam rather than merely a defensive blast. The manual does not provide a damage table, a per-shot number or a claim that every enemy loses a limb under identical conditions. The defensible conclusion is narrower: the alternate fire is capable of damaging enemies through dismemberment, while the exact amount varies with circumstances that the cited manual passage does not quantify.

How the 2023 remake’s Force Gun is described

Primary fire: a burst of force

Gamer Guides describes the remake’s primary fire as a burst of force. Its listed base damage is 100 damage points, rising to 170 damage points after the weapon is upgraded. These are guide-reported remake statistics, not values established by an independent laboratory test in the cited material.

Those figures should be read as version-specific gameplay data. They are useful when deciding whether an upgrade is worthwhile in the 2023 remake, but they are not a series-wide Force Gun standard. Neither the Dead Space 2 manual nor the official listing for the 2008 original supplies evidence that the same 100-to-170 progression applies there.

Rank #2

Alternate fire: gravity well

The remake guide describes the alternate fire as a gravity well that pulls enemies together. That gathering function is crowd control, but it does not mean the mode is harmless. According to the same guide, upgrading the gravity well causes it to deal damage over time.

This creates two separate effects to keep in mind:

  • Positioning: the gravity well gathers enemies, changing where they are relative to one another.
  • Damage: the upgraded version applies damage over time, rather than being only a one-time pull.

The cited description does not provide a separate damage number for the gravity well, so the 100 and 170 figures should not be presented as its damage values. They are the guide’s listed base and upgraded figures for the Force Gun, while the alternate-fire description separately identifies the upgraded gravity well’s damage-over-time behavior.

Upgraded Force Gun 170 damage points Listed by Gamer Guides for the remake; the upgrade level and guide’s conditions should not be generalized to other installments.

Alternate fire Gravity well that pulls enemies together Guide description for the remake.
Upgraded alternate fire Deals damage over time Guide description; no separate damage-over-time number is supplied.

Why players sometimes mistake it for a non-damaging weapon

The confusion comes from the Force Gun’s visible force effects. A weapon that pushes, pulls or groups enemies can look like a utility tool, especially when its immediate purpose is to create space or change enemy positions. In the remake, the gravity well’s pull is prominent enough that a player may notice the crowd-control result before noticing the later damage-over-time effect.

Damage and control are not mutually exclusive. A shot can alter enemy placement and still reduce their survivability. The Dead Space 2 manual makes this distinction especially clear: its alternate fire is described as a focused force beam, and the stated result is limb removal. In the remake, the guide separates the gathering function of the gravity well from the damage-over-time effect unlocked by its upgrade.

When testing your own loadout, identify which result you are observing. An enemy being displaced is evidence of force or control; a severed limb, a reduced health state or the guide’s documented damage-over-time effect is evidence of damage. Do not infer a universal numeric value from the animation alone.

What can be said about the 2008 original

The official Xbox listing for the original Dead Space explains the series’ dismemberment-based combat and the existence of alternate-fire modes. That supports the broader context in which the Force Gun operates: weapons are designed around damaging and disabling necromorph bodies rather than relying only on conventional health-bar depletion.

However, the listing does not specify the Force Gun’s damage. An exact original-game number is therefore unresolved in the cited evidence. It would be inaccurate to label the remake’s 100 base or 170 upgraded figures as the 2008 weapon’s statistics, and it would be equally inaccurate to claim that the Dead Space 2 manual’s wording is an original-game specification.

If you need an answer for the 2008 release, the safe version-specific statement is that the Force Gun belongs to a dismemberment-focused combat system and has alternate-fire functionality, but the available official listing does not establish a precise damage value.

How to interpret the Force Gun while choosing a fire mode

When you need a direct damaging effect

Use the documented damage information for the edition you own. In the remake, the guide’s 100-point base and 170-point upgraded figures are the available reference values. In Dead Space 2, the manual’s reliable indicator is the alternate fire’s ability to rip limbs off almost anything, not a numeric damage table.

When enemies are grouped or positioning is the problem

The remake’s gravity-well alternate fire is described as pulling enemies together. That makes its immediate purpose positional: it gathers targets so the encounter can be managed as a group. If the gravity well has been upgraded, the guide says it also deals damage over time, giving the mode a damage component in addition to its pull.

When an upgrade is being considered

For the remake, the guide reports a rise from 100 base damage points to 170 upgraded. The same source identifies damage over time as an upgraded gravity-well benefit. Those are separate reasons an upgrade may matter: a higher listed damage figure for the Force Gun and an added damaging effect for the alternate fire. The source does not establish the cost, exact upgrade path or a separate numerical damage-over-time rate, so those details should not be assumed.

Common mistakes about Force Gun damage

  • Applying one game’s numbers to another: the remake’s 100 and 170 figures are not established for the 2008 original or Dead Space 2.
  • Calling the gravity well harmless: its pull is a control effect, but the remake guide says the upgraded version deals damage over time.
  • Treating crowd control as the whole weapon: the Dead Space 2 manual explicitly describes limb-ripping alternate fire.
  • Presenting guide statistics as independent testing: the cited 100 and 170 values come from Gamer Guides and should be attributed that way.
  • Inventing an original-game damage value: the official 2008 listing does not provide one.

Bottom line

The Force Gun does damage in Dead Space, but the precise answer is installment-specific. In Dead Space 2, the official manual says its alternate fire is a focused force beam capable of ripping limbs off almost anything. In the 2023 remake, Gamer Guides reports 100 base damage points and 170 when upgraded, describes the primary fire as a force burst, and says the upgraded gravity-well alternate fire deals damage over time. For the 2008 original, the cited official listing confirms dismemberment-focused combat and alternate-fire modes but does not establish an exact Force Gun damage number.
