Rod Fergusson’s proposed direction for Gears 6 would have taken the series beyond Sera to a new place in the solar system. He tied the idea to the UIR rocket technology and territory featured in Gears 5—but described exploring one new location, not turning the franchise into a planet-hopping space opera. It was Fergusson’s vision, not a confirmed or final plot.
What was the original plan for Gears 6?
“Gears 6 was to leave Sera,” Fergusson said in an interview reported by GamesRadar+. He connected the proposed shift to groundwork in Gears 5: the UIR rocket technology and the takeover of UIR territory. His aim was to take players to a new place and explore what the space program might mean for the wider solar system.

That did not mean constant travel between worlds. Fergusson specifically tempered the idea: the plan was not to hop from planet to planet. The comments point to a change of setting and a broader sense of possibility, not a defined itinerary or a fully detailed story.
Was Gears 6 going to take place in space?
Not in the sense of a space opera spanning multiple planets. Fergusson described leaving Sera for a new place in the solar system, while ruling out planet-hopping. The available account does not establish the destination, how much of the game would take place there, or what the characters would encounter.

It is also important to distinguish an idea from an approved game plot. Fergusson had previously said he wrote a Gears 6 story synopsis before leaving The Coalition, while acknowledging that the studio might have discarded it. His comments therefore describe the direction he envisioned, not a final script or an official story announcement. GameSpot reported that earlier qualification.
What would the plan have meant for the Gears 5 ending?
Gears 5 ended with a choice between saving Marcus’s son JD or Del. Fergusson did not reveal how his synopsis handled that decision, and reports described the choice as close. There is no basis in his public comments for saying which character survived or that his outline resolved the branch.

So while the proposed sequel would have moved the setting beyond Sera, its relationship to the ending’s central choice remains unknown. Players looking for a confirmed answer about what happens next do not get one from Fergusson’s account.

The Coalition later chose Gears of War: E-Day, an origin story about the beginnings of the Locust War, rather than continuing directly from Gears 5. In a 2026 Xbox Wire interview, the studio described its decision to return to the franchise’s origins instead of making Gears 6. Creative director Matt Searcy told GameSpot that the team chose the story it most wanted to tell, and that starting from scratch helped make E-Day compelling.
