Sony’s announced schedule is for the future; physical releases have not already ended.
What Layden said about game ownership
In an October 2026 appearance on The Expansion Pass podcast, Layden questioned what buyers receive when they cannot transfer or resell a digital purchase. As reported by GamesRadar, he said the shift changes the conversation from whether someone owns a game to whether they have access to a digital asset.

Layden’s point is about the difference between possessing a resellable copy and receiving access under a digital license. It is his criticism, not an announcement that Sony will revoke players’ existing digital purchases. He also acknowledged the convenience of downloads and described physical buyers as a smaller but “super important” group. Layden said he lacked visibility into Sony’s financials, so his assessment should not be read as a disclosed analysis of the company’s business.
When Sony plans to stop releasing new games on disc
Sony announced that new PlayStation games will be available in digital formats only beginning in January 2028, according to Ars Technica. That is a scheduled change, not a statement that disc production or physical releases have already stopped. The announcement concerns new PlayStation games; it does not, by itself, establish what will happen to existing disc libraries or used games.

- Marvel’s Wolverine is a new action-packed adventure from Insomniac Games
- Play as Wolverine and Ravage enemies with explosive brutality and unleash razor-sharp adamantium claws to deploy fast, fluid attacks and overcome impossible odds
- An Original, Emotionally Charged Story. Beneath Wolverine’s gruff exterior and violent temperament is a man fighting for a cause greater than himself

Why Sony says the market is moving digital
Sony’s reported rationale is that general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs. For scale, Sony reported that digital downloads accounted for 78 percent of full-game unit purchases in its fiscal year ending March 31, 2026. That figure is about full-game units purchased through Sony’s business in that fiscal year—not revenue, all games, or sales across every platform.
Sony CFO Lin Tao said the company had considered the decision carefully and would proceed cautiously. A Sony communications executive was also reported as saying the company did not expect discontinuing discs to have a negative business impact, while acknowledging players’ attachment to physical games. Those statements describe Sony’s position; they do not resolve Layden’s concern about what an individual buyer can transfer or resell.

- Reawaken a Classic – Resident Evil 4 preserves the essence of the original game, now reconstructed using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine to deliver realistic visuals and additional narrative depth to the iconic story that was not possible at the time of the original release.
- Modernized Gameplay – The team from 2019’s Resident Evil 2 returns to build upon the series’ modern approach to survival horror. Engage in frenzied combat with the Ganados villagers, explore a European village gripped by madness, and solve puzzles to access new areas and collect useful items for Leon and Ashley’s constant struggle to survive.
- Overwhelming Hordes – Face hordes of rabid enemies that threaten to overwhelm Leon with even more diverse methods of attack than in the original release.
- Survive on a Knife’s Edge – Years of intense training have taught Leon new ways to use his knife, helping to even the odds against the unrelenting onslaught of enemies. By parrying enemy attacks, you can avoid debilitating damage and evade lunging enemies seeking to grab Leon and hold him in place. Make smart use of scavenged knives to deliver precise finishing moves on vulnerable enemies, and even use the element of surprise to quietly dispatch unsuspecting foes before they break.

What a digital purchase means for resale and access
Ars Technica quotes PlayStation Store terms describing a purchase as a personal license for private, non-commercial use that is not transferable unless applicable local law requires otherwise. That language helps explain why a digital purchase is generally not equivalent to a physical copy that its owner can resell. The local-law exception matters: the terms should not be treated as universal legal advice.
The license language establishes a distinction in transferability; it does not prove that Sony will revoke all digital purchases. The practical question for a buyer is therefore narrower than whether digital games are “owned” in every sense: can the purchase be transferred or resold under the applicable terms, and what access does the platform license provide?

What changes for players who prefer physical games
- Resale and transfer: A physical copy can be resold or passed on, while the cited PlayStation Store terms say a digital license is not transferable unless local law requires otherwise.
- Convenience: Layden acknowledged the convenience of downloading games. Digital purchases avoid handling a disc, but depend on the platform’s digital storefront and terms.
- Collecting: Layden characterized physical buyers as a smaller group that remains important. Sony has not said that the January 2028 schedule has already taken effect.
- Internet availability: In a July 2026 interview summarized by Push Square, Layden raised broadband availability and people on military bases as concerns for players who may lack reliable internet access. Those are his observations, not a Sony announcement about future hardware.
For players deciding what to buy before the schedule changes, the key distinction is whether resale, collecting, or access in places with limited connectivity matters more to them than download convenience. Sony’s cited announcement sets a future schedule for new games; it does not settle every question about particular releases, existing purchases, or future console hardware.
