What is Retail Mage?
Retail Mage is Jam & Tea Studios’ debut game. Players take the role of a wizard working in a magical furniture store, serving customers and trying to earn favorable reviews—or making mischief and disrupting the workday. Jam & Tea describes it as playable with up to three friends on its official site.
The game launched on Steam on November 13, 2024, according to its Steam community page, which also lists developer updates through version 1.3, dated April 25, 2025. The studio’s site currently describes the game as out now.
How do its AI-powered NPCs work?
Players can type intentions, not just choose preset lines
In its August 30, 2024 report, TechCrunch described a system in which a player could type a prompt such as asking a character to “say something charming.” The game then offered four dialogue choices. The reported design also extended beyond conversation: players could state an intention toward an object or try to create an item, and the system interpreted whether the action succeeded.

In a demo example reported by TechCrunch, a customer asked for an antelope-shaped plush. The game added the invented object to inventory but represented it with a default pillow image rather than newly generated art. The example illustrates a distinction in the reported design: AI could help interpret interactions and support gameplay without necessarily generating visual assets.
Human creatives provide character context
TechCrunch quoted co-founder and chief creative officer M. Yichao describing how the team gives NPCs motivations, interests, backstories, and example lines to help responses remain in character. Yichao argued that creative work remains central: “Our philosophy is that we believe creatives are going to be only more essential as we move forward in using this technology and in bringing new experiences to players,” the co-founder told TechCrunch.

At the time of that 2024 report, the studio said it was not using AI to generate 2D or 3D art. That was the team’s description at the time, not an independent audit of every later build.
What are the limits and safety considerations?
Generative responses can be unpredictable: TechCrunch noted the risk of NPCs behaving erratically or giving players incorrect information about the game world. The studio told TechCrunch it had guardrails intended to prevent inappropriate conversations and a player rating mechanism to provide feedback on character responses. Those are descriptions of the company’s approach, not an independent safety evaluation.

In the same report, Jam & Tea said it was experimenting with models from OpenAI, Google’s Gemma, Mistral, and Meta’s Llama, and had not made a final selection. The sources available do not identify the model or configuration in the released game, so none of those should be presented as its confirmed current provider.
What is known about development and the studio’s other project?
In a 2025 retrospective, Jam & Tea CTO Aaron Farr said the team shipped Retail Mage after five months of development. That account is the studio’s own description of its process. The studio’s homepage also describes its flagship project, codenamed Project Emily, as an adventure through new and familiar worlds where player actions change the story; it does not give a release date.

TechCrunch reported in August 2024 that Jam & Tea had raised $3.15 million in seed financing, led by London Venture Partners with Sisu Game Ventures and 1Up Ventures participating. That figure is a reported financing amount, not a measure of the game’s budget or an industry-wide statistic.

The verified release information points to Steam. The Steam community page records the November 13, 2024 launch, and Jam & Tea’s website says the game is out now. TechCrunch’s 2024 article mentioned a planned $15 price, but that was a projection at the time; it does not establish today’s price. A current regional Steam price is not established here, so check the Steam store listing for availability and pricing in your region.
